Metabolic impact of adult-onset, isolated, growth hormone deficiency (AOiGHD) due to destruction of pituitary somatotropes.

Growth hormone (GH) inhibits fat accumulation and promotes protein accretion, therefore the fall in GH observed with weight gain and normal aging may contribute to metabolic dysfunction. To directly test this hypothesis a novel mouse model of adult onset-isolated GH deficiency (AOiGHD) was generated by cross breeding rat GH promoter-driven Cre recombinase mice (Cre) with inducible diphtheria toxin receptor mice (iDTR) and treating adult Cre(+/-), iDTR(+/-) offspring with DT to selectively destroy the somatotrope population of the anterior pituitary gland, leading to a reduction in circulating GH and IGF-I levels. Priming with proangiogenic growth factors and endothelial progenitor cells improves revascularization in linear diabetic wounds

In the present study, we investigated whether proangiogenic growth factors and endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) induce favourable effects on cutaneous incisional wound healing in diabetic mice. The proangiogenic effects of human EPCs were initially analyzed using a HUVEC in vitro angiogenesis assay and an in vivo Matrigel assay in nude mice (n=12). For the diabetic wound model, 48 Balb/c mice with streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetes were divided randomly into 4 groups (12 mice in each group). Profile of leukocyte-endothelial cell interactions induced in venules and arterioles by nucleoside reverse-transcriptase inhibitors in vivo.

Background There is controversy regarding cardiovascular (CV) toxicity of the nucleoside reverse-transcriptase inhibitors used to treat human immunodeficiency virus infection. Methods We evaluated the effects of nucleoside reverse-transcriptase inhibitors on leukocyte-endothelium interactions, a hallmark of CV diseases, in rat mesenteric vessels using intravital microscopy and in human arterial cells using a flow chamber system. Results Abacavir and didanosine increased rolling, adhesion and emigration in rat vessels. Interaction of radiation fog with tall vegetation

Abstract A one-dimensional radiation fog model is presented. It is coupled with a second model to include the effects of tall vegetation. The fog model describes in detail the dynamics, thermodynamics, and microphysical structure of a fog, as well as the interactions with the atmospheric radiative transfer. A two-dimensional joint size distribution for the aerosol particles and activated fog droplets is used, the activation of aerosol particles is explicitly modeled. The implications of the presence of tall vegetation on the state of the atmosphere and on the evolution of radiation fog are stated. Multilayer modelling of ozone fluxes on winter wheat reveals large deposition on wet senescing leaves

Understanding how ozone is deposited on vegetation canopies is needed to perform tropospheric greenhouse gas budgets and evaluate the associated damage on vegetation. In this study, we propose a new multilayer scheme of ozone deposition on vegetation canopies that predicts stomatal, cuticular and soil deposition pathways separately. This mechanistic ozone deposition scheme is based on the multi-layer, multi-leaf mass and energy transfer model MuSICA. Heavy metal ions can be released by corroding metallic implants into the surrounding tissue. When they enter blood vessels some of them are carried by proteins like albumin and can be taken up by endothelial cells lining the vessels. To study their involvement in the inflammatory response we investigated heavy metal ion induced effects in cultured human vascular endothelial cells (HUVECs).
