A Preliminary Study on Photic Driving in the Electroencephalogram of Children with Autism across a Wide Cognitive and Behavioral Range.
2022
Intermittent photic stimulation (IPS) is a useful technique in electroencephalography (EEG) to investigate the neurophysiological anomalies of brain activity. Although not an active task, IPS has also been explored in ASD; it is thought to capture local potential oscillators at specific frequencies and perhaps tap into rhythmic activity in a way that general resting-state recordings cannot. Previous studies suggest that individuals with ASD showed photic driving reactivity predominantly at lower frequencies of stimulation. In our study we used IPS to measure rhythmic oscillatory activity in a sample of 81 ASD children. We found a significant correlation linking ASD children with photic driv…
Il lavoro nel turismo
2019
Noninvasive Ventilation in Critically Ill Patients
2015
Since its first application in the late 1980s, noninvasive ventilation (NIV) has been the first-line intervention for certain forms of acute respiratory failure. NIV may be delivered through the patient's mouth, nose, or both using noninvasive intermittent positive pressure ventilation or continuous positive airway pressure. When applied appropriately, NIV may reduce morbidity and mortality and may avert iatrogenic complications and infections associated with invasive mechanical ventilation. This article provides physicians and respiratory therapists with a comprehensive, practical guideline for using NIV in critical care. © 2015 Elsevier Inc.
Impact of Renewables in Spanish Electricity Markets
2021
Adipose Tissue in Sleep Apnea
2015
Obesity is increasingly recognized as a very complex metabolic state. Besides visceral obesity and white adipose tissue (WAT) function, the most recent studies point to a major metabolic role of brown adipose tissue (BAT) in energy metabolism. Visceral obesity is associated with hypoxia of adipose tissue and inflammation, both these features being also present in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Obesity and OSA may share some common pathogenetic mechanisms, since hypoxia and inflammation are major features of OSA as well. However, the unique pattern of intermittent hypoxia occurring in OSA patients during sleep may modify the response of WAT and BAT in both lean and obese subjec…
Cilostazol and atherogenic dyslipidemia: a clinically relevant effect
2011
Cilostazol is a reversible, selective inhibitor of PDE3A able to significantly improve walking distance in patients with intermittent claudication. However, beyond its antiplatelet and vasodilator properties, cilostazol seems to have significant effects on atherogenic dyslipidemia. The effects of cilostazol on plasma lipids, lipoproteins, apolipoproteins and postprandial lipemia are reviewed. A literature search (using Medline and Scopus) was performed up to 24 October 2010. The authors also manually reviewed the references of selected articles for any pertinent material.Cilostazol is able to significantly lower plasma triglyceride levels, with a concomitant increase in high-density lipoprot…
Intermittent ethanol exposure induces inflammatory brain damage and causes long-term behavioural alterations in adolescent rats
2007
Adolescent brain development seems to be important for the maturation of brain structures and behaviour. Intermittent binge ethanol drinking is common among adolescents, and this type of drinking can induce brain damage. Because we have demonstrated that chronic ethanol treatment induces inflammatory processes in the brain, we investigate whether intermittent ethanol intoxication enhances cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) in adolescent rats, and whether these mediators induce brain damage and cause permanent cognitive dysfunctions. Adolescent rats were exposed to ethanol (3.0 g/kg) for two consecutive days at 48-h intervals over 14 days. Levels of COX-2, iN…

all the steatosis grades, except S2 vs S3. The diagnostic performances of CAP in quantifying each steatosis grade was: for S ≥1 AUC=0.813 (cutoff 260dB/m, Se = 64.84%, Sp =87.27%, PPV=80.8%, NPV=75%, +LR =5.09, −LR =0.40, DA=76.11%); for S ≥2 AUC=0.822 (cutoff 285dB/m, Se = 69.70%, Sp =85.12%, PPV=47.9%, NPV=93.5%, +LR =4.68, −LR =0.36, DA=82.08%); for S ≥3 AUC=0.838 (cutoff 294dB/m, Se =83.33%, Sp =82.54%, PPV=23.3%, NPV=98.7%, +LR =4.77, −LR =0.20, DA=81.59%). AUCs calculated between two steatosis grades only were: 0.772 (for S0 vs S1), 0.874 (S0 vs S2), 0.904 (S0 vs S3), 0.659 (S1 vs S2), 0.777 (S1 vs S3), and 0.665 (S2 vs S3) respectively. Conclusions: Maximal diagnostic accuracy could …
Ureterocystoplasty in a Boy with Myelomeningocele
2010
Introduction In the rare case of a decompensated neurogenic bladder combined with a unilateral hydronephrosis and hydroureter, ureterocystoplasty is a feasible and elegant technique for bladder augmentation. In contrast to augmentation using bowel segments, the use of urothelial-lined tissue avoids the common problems caused by mucus development and electrolyte disturbance. Prerequisite is a unilateral non-functional kidney and a severe dilation of the ureter. Patients The patient presented in this case report is an 11-year old boy with myelomeningocele. Due to a decompensated neurogenic low-compliance bladder with high-degree reflux, the left kidney was hydronephrotic and afunctional, urod…
