Preparation and x-ray pole-figure characterization of DC-sputtered Bi-2201, Bi-2212 and Bi-2223 thin films

1997

Thin films of the three members of the superconducting series , n = 1,2,3, were prepared by diode sputtering. X-ray characterization shows that all the films are single phase and c-axis oriented and in addition they are epitaxially grown. The latter is found by x-ray pole-figure measurements taken with a four-circle diffractometer. These are emphasized in this work. AC susceptibility measurements show that, while the 2201 films are not superconducting until 4 K, the transition temperatures of the 2212 films are 82 K - 90 K and of the 2223 films 84 K - 89 K.

Growth of polycrystalline nickel hydroxide films from aqueous solution. Solution chemistry, deposition methods, film morphology and texture

2014

Abstract Deposition of functional ceramic films on different substrates by using soft aqueous solution processing can represent a cheap, low- energy and environmental friendly alternative to other film technologies. In this study β-Ni(OH)2 polycrystalline films were grown on polytetrafluoroethylene, NiO, glass, copper, and Y:ZrO2 substrates from Ni2 +–NH4OH aqueous solutions. A careful control of solution supersaturation was essential to induce heterogeneous nucleation on the substrate and film growth. This was realized through the gradual decomposition of the nickel amino complexes Ni(NH3)n2 + using two different methods. Thermodynamic modeling of the Ni–NH4OH–H2O system was used to provid…

Porphyroblast crystallization kinetics: the role of the nutrient production rate

2011

The mechanisms that govern porphyroblast crystallization are investigated by comparing quantitative textural data with predictions from different crystallization models. Such numerical models use kinetic formulations of the main crystallization mechanism to predict textural characteristics, such as grain size distributions. In turn, data on porphyroblast textures for natural samples are used to infer which mechanism dominated during their formation. Whereas previous models assume that the rate-limiting step for a porphyroblast producing reaction is either transport or growth, the model advanced in this study considers the production of nutrients for porphyroblasts as a potentially rate-limi…

Multiscale analyses and characterizations of surface topographies

2018

International audience; This work studies multiscale analyses and characterizations of surface topographies from the engineering and scientific literature with an emphasis on production engineering research and design. It highlights methods that provide strong correlations between topographies and performance or topographies and processes, and methods that can confidently discriminate topographies that were processed or that perform differently. These methods have commonalities in geometric characterizations at certain scales, which are observable with statistics and measurements. It also develops a semantic and theoretical framework and proposes a new system for organizing and designating …

HD-RTI: an adaptive multi-light imaging approach for the quality assessment of manufactured surfaces

2021

International audience; Reflectance Transformation Imaging (RTI) is a technique for estimating surface local angular reflectance from a set of stereo-photometric images captured with variable lighting directions. The digitization of this information fully fits into the industry 4.0 approach and makes it possible to characterize the visual properties of a surface. The proposed method, namely HD-RTI, is based on the coupling of RTI and HDR imaging techniques. This coupling is carried out adaptively according to the response at each angle of illumination. The proposed method is applied to five industrial samples which have high local variations of reflectivity because of their heterogeneity of…

In-lab versus on-site measurement of surface performance of flexible pavements

2017

Road safety is one of the major problems which affect our society. Skid resistance mainly depends on a pavement surface microtexture and macrotexture. Macrotexture can be easily measured on site through the Sand Patch method (mean texture depth, MTD, UNI EN 13036-1, ASTM E 965, CNR B.U. 94/83). Carrying out the measurements above on the samples, in the laboratory, at the preliminary stage of the design of the pavement, would enhance the design in terms of timing and costs. In the light of the above, the objective of the study presented in this paper is to set up and validate a method for deriving the sand patch value based on core measurements. A Predictive relationship is proposed in terms…

MESH COMPARISON USING ATTRIBUTE DEVIATION METRIC

2004

We propose a mesh comparison method using a new attribute deviation metric. The considered meshes contain geometrical and appearance attributes (material color, texture, temperature, etc.). The proposed deviation metric computes local differences between the attributes of two meshes. A mesh comparison assessment can be done easily and quickly using this metric. The techniques proposed are applicable in a number of ways, e.g. 3D matching and registration, and the example described in the paper is the simplification of a surface by iteratively reducing its complexity according to an error metric. The results are presented showing the success of the algorithm through comparisons with other me…

Biologically Inspired Model for Inference of 3D Shape from Texture.

2015

A biologically inspired model architecture for inferring 3D shape from texture is proposed. The model is hierarchically organized into modules roughly corresponding to visual cortical areas in the ventral stream. Initial orientation selective filtering decomposes the input into low-level orientation and spatial frequency representations. Grouping of spatially anisotropic orientation responses builds sketch-like representations of surface shape. Gradients in orientation fields and subsequent integration infers local surface geometry and globally consistent 3D depth. From the distributions in orientation responses summed in frequency, an estimate of the tilt and slant of the local surface can…

Effects of internal texture on cognitive preferences concerning rotational symmetry

2009

This paper explores the effects of the internal texture of an image on cognitive preferences relative to symmetry detection in humans. We devised an experiment on human subjects, based on identification of the main symmetry in a geometrical shape while varying its internal texture, whose results have been compared with the analysis of a fuzzy model of symmetry search incorporating elements form human experience. Results are in agreement with the gestalt model: rotational symmetry detection is also affected by factors perceived as less significative, such as the stimulus' internal texture, and this preference can easily be included in an automatic detection algorithm.
