Visible photothermal deflection spectroscopy using microcantilevers

International audience; Photothermal deflection spectroscopy based on bi-material cantilevers combines the sensitivity of miniature sensors and the selectivity of optical spectroscopy. In this paper, we report on the photothermal response of the microcantilevers functionalized with nanometer thin organic films in the visible region. Unlike responses in the infrared regime, in the optical region, light absorption by all the cantilever constituents must be considered for extraction of the physical parameters of the organic layer. A model of photothermal deflection for the optical region has been developed for two absorbing layers consisting of a thick metal (>200 nm) and a thin organic film. …
Activation process of reversible Pd thin film hydrogen sensors

Abstract Microcantilever-based thin film palladium hydrogen sensors have high selectivity and sensitivity. Reproducibility and accuracy of the sensor performance depend on the activation process of the polycrystalline palladium film deposited on the cantilever. When the hydrogen is in solid solution ( α -phase), the cantilever bending is mostly governed by the residual film stress induced by the swelling at the grain boundaries in the film. When the palladium hydride ( β -phase) starts to be formed, the cantilever undergoes a large deflection due to hydrogen absorption-induced film swelling (10% change in volume). Atomic layer deposition of Ti-Nb-O thin films onto electrospun fibers for fibrous and tubular catalyst support structures

Here, the authors report on the preparation of core-shell carbon-ceramic fibrous as well as ceramic tubular catalyst supports utilizing electrospinning and atomic layer deposition (ALD). In this paper, ALD of Ti-Nb-O thin films using TiCl4, Nb(OEt)5, and H2O as precursors is demonstrated. According to the time-of-flight-elastic recoil detection analysis and Rutherford backscattering spectrometry, carbon and hydrogen impurities were relatively low, but depend on the pulsing ratio of the precursors. Application of amorphous chalcogenide thin films in optical recording technologies

A solid immersion holographic method for the recording of refractive-index and surface-relief modulated gratings with a period of 0.2 µm–1 µm in amorphous films of chalcogenide semiconductors As2S3 and As-S-Se has been developed and studied. The angular selectivity of holographic recording in amorphous chalcogenide thin films can be improved significantly by a decrease of grating period. The possibility to use the amorphous chalcogenide films as a media for holographic recording and storage of information with high density is discussed. (© 2005 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Holographic recording of surface-relief and refiactive-index-modulated gratings with a period ranging from 0.15 to 1 μm in thin amorphous chalcogenide films of As-S-Se and As2S3 is studied. The profile of the surface-relief gratings is measured by atomic force microscopy. By structuring the As-S-Se films with the subwavelength-period surface-relief gratings their reflectivity is decreased from 25-30% to less than 2%. In the refractive-index-modulated As2S3 films polarization effects are revealed. A review of the recent advances and developments in the practical application of amorphous chalcogenide materials is presented, focusing special attention to holography and lithography. The main functional principles and practical application of amorphous chalcogenide photoresists for production of the embossed rainbow holograms and holographic optical elements are discussed. Abstract This report present the studies of direct holographic recording of the surface relief gratings on amorphous As2S3 films by 532 nm laser light. By giving extra time for recording exposure (more than necessary for volume amplitude-phase optical recording, e.g. Kikineshi, 2000 [2] ), changes of surface relief in the resist material can be observed. This direct surface relief formation phenomenon during holographic recording is discussed here from the side of recording light polarization. Abstract Recording capabilities of As Se S chalcogenide (ChG) glasses using electron beam (EB) lithography have been investigated in this study. After exposure with EB the thin films of these inorganic glasses can be etched in alkaline amine solvent with high selectivity. High resolution, smooth shaped structures have been fabricated using ChG thin films. Height of developed pattern can be controlled through changing applied electron dose.

Lithium selenoindate (LiInSe2) is a new nonlinear chalcogenide biaxial crystal, related to LiInS2 and transparent from 0.54 to 10 μm at the 50% level (10 mm thickness), which has been successfully grown in large sizes and with good optical quality. We report on what we believe to be new physical properties that are relevant for laser and nonlinear optical applications and summarize all relevant characteristics, both from the literature and as measured in the present work.
