Biosynthesis of ecdysones in isolated prothoracic glands and oenocytes of Tenebrio molitor in vitro.
1974
Abstract Isolated prothoracic glands from Tenebrio larvae synthesize in vitro α-ecdysone, but not β-ecdysone from 4-14C-cholesterol. Isolated abdominal oenocytes from the larvae synthesize mainly β-ecdysone, but only little α-ecdysone. When prothoracic glands and oenocytes are cultured together, the α-ecdysone derived from the prothoracic glands is oxidized by the oenocytes to β-ecdysone. The newly synthesized hormones are not stored in the cells, but are secreted into the medium if sufficient amounts of non-labelled hormones are present. If no unlabelled hormones are added to the culture medium, the newly formed hormones are converted to a large extent into polar conjugates.
An Incremental Analysis of the Embryonic Development of the Tobacco Hornworm,Manduca sexta
1987
Summary A timetable of the embryonic development of Manduca sexta has been compiled to serve as a basis for physiological studies. Embryogenesis is complete within 117 hr at 24° C and was analyzed by examining specimens representing 20 stages, i.e. intervals of 5% of the total developmental time. Stage 0 denotes the newly deposited egg. Germ band formation, gastrulation, differentiation of tissues and organs, and blastokinesis are described in detail. By stage 1 (6 hr post-oviposition) the cellular blastoderm is evident and the presumptive serosal and embryonic cells are distinguishable. At stage 2 the germ band has separated from the blastoderm, and by stage 3 it has elongated enormously, …
Delayed chronic intracranial subdural hematoma complicating resection of a tanycytic thoracic ependymoma
2015
Background To demonstrate that the diagnosis of an intracranial subdural hematoma should be considered for patients presenting with acute or delayed symptoms of intracranial pathology following resection of a spinal tumor. Case description We present a case of a 57-year-old woman found to have a chronic subdural hematoma 1 month following resection of a thoracic extramedullary ependymoma. Evacuation of the hematoma through a burr hole relieved the presenting symptoms and signs. Resolution of the hematoma was confirmed with a computed tomography (CT) scan. Conclusion Headache and other symptoms not referable to spinal pathology should be regarded as a warning sign of an intracranial subdural…
Presurgical role of MRI tractography in a case of extensive cervicothoracic spinal ependymoma
2017
Background: Intramedullary spinal ependymoma is a tumor, hardly characterizable with conventional magnetic resonance (MR) imaging only. MR diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) with three dimensional fiber tracking reconstructions allows the evaluation of the relationship between neoplasm and white matter fiber tracts, being a powerful tool in presurgical planning. We present DTI findings in a case of a young female with an extensive cervicothoracic spinal ependymoma. Case Description: The patient complained of a 2 month history of acute urinary retention, weakness and numbness on the lower limbs and the upper left limb. She underwent MR imaging that showed an extensive cervicothoracic spinal mass…
Thoracic spinal extradural arachnoid cyst: A case report and literature review
2022
Background: Spinal extradural arachnoid cysts (SEDACs) are rare and are variously attributed to congenital, traumatic, or inflammatory etiologies. Here, we report a 70-year-old male who presented with a T11-T12 SEDAC and an incidental craniovertebral junction (CVJ) meningioma. Case Description: A 70-year-old male presented with progressive bilateral lower limb weakness and paresthesias. The thoracic MRI identified an extradural arachnoid cystic lesion at the T11-T12 level. In addition, the brain/ cervical MR documented an incidental meningioma at the CVJ. The patient underwent T11-T12 laminectomy for fenestration/removal of the extradural arachnoid cyst resulting in immediate cord decompre…
Potential Functional Significance of Brain-Type and Muscle-Type Nitric Oxide Synthase I Expressed in Adventitia and Media of Rat Aorta
1999
Abstract —Skeletal muscle and myocardium express μNOS I, an elongated splice variant of neuronal-type nitric oxide (NO) synthase (NOS I), and NOS III, endothelial-type NO synthase, respectively. This study was designed to elucidate whether vascular smooth muscle also contains a constitutively expressed NO synthase isoform. In the rat, μNOS I contains an insert of 102 nucleotides after nucleotide 2865 of the cDNA, yielding a protein of 164 kd. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction with primers flanking this insert and with insert-specific primers indicated that endothelium-denuded rat aorta expresses both brain-type NOS I and μNOS I. RNase protection analyses with an antisense RNA…
La universidad en el desarrollo de la cirugía torácica española
2005
The present article analyzes the figures of the university professors who, from 1911, formed part of one of the basic pillars in the development of "Spanish Thoracic Surgery". At that time, there was a certain amount of infighting between general and specialized surgery, which was resolved by allowing specialization after a period of training in general surgery. Universities should not be denied the great merit of having produced well-trained surgeons with a broad general foundation who would later choose a specialty. The figures of Ricardo Lozano Monzon, Francisco Martin Lagos, Jose Gasco, Benjamin Narbona, Carlos Carbonell Antoli, Rafael Vara Lopez, Alfonso de la Fuente Chaos and Jose M. …
Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), EGFR downstream pathway activation and TKI targeted therapies sensitivity: Effect of the plasma membrane-associat…
2017
Adenocarcinoma of Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) is a severe disease. Patients carrying EGFR mutations may benefit from EGFR targeted therapies (e.g.: gefitinib). Recently, it has been shown that sialidase NEU3 directly interacts and regulates EGFR. In this work, we investigate the effect of sialidase NEU3 overexpression on EGFR pathways activation and EGFR targeted therapies sensitivity, in a series of lung cancer cell lines. NEU3 overexpression, forced after transfection, does not affect NSCLC cell viability. We demonstrate that NEU3 overexpression stimulates the ERK pathway but this activation is completely abolished by gefitinib treatment. The Akt pathway is also hyper-activated upo…
Morphometrische Untersuchungen an Darminterponaten nach totaler Gastrektomie
1982
