Effects of resistance training on testosterone metabolism in younger and older men

This study investigated the effects of resistance training (RT) on the metabolism of testosterone (T) in younger (n=5, 28±3yrs.) and older (n=8, 70±2yrs.) men. Experimental heavy resistance exercises (5×10RM leg presses) were performed before and after a 12-month of RT. No age differences were found in the production or metabolic clearance rate of T (determined by stable isotope dilution method), skeletal muscle androgen receptor content or serum LH concentrations due to acute or chronic RT. This report describes the use of the intraoperative parathyroid hormone (ioPTH) assay during parathyroidectomy in waiting list and transplanted patients. ioPTH levels were determined in 40 patients on the waiting list for kidney transplantation with secondary hyperparathyroidism who underwent subtotal parathyroidectomy and 9 transplanted patients with tertiary hyperparathyroidism who underwent removal of hyperplasic glands. Transabdominal sonography of the adrenal glands frequently is non-successful. It was the aim of this project to improve the imaging of the adrenal glands using high resolution sonography in order to obtain information about even small changes in these organs. Therefore, endosonographic imaging was investigated using an endosonoscope PENTAX FG32UA. The correct identification of the adrenal glands was examined in five human cadavers. A total of 58 patients with 113 adrenal glands (in 3 cases history of unilateral adrenalectomy) were investigated. 109 adrenal glands (97%) were identified and evaluated. Hypothyroidism was documented by cordocentesis at 19 weeks in a fetus with non-immune goiter. Intra-amniotic thyroxine was injected at 25 weeks when amniotic fluid volume increased. Psychomotor outcome was normal. We argue that intra-amniotic thyroxine should not be used to treat the hypothyroidism but only to correct the development of polyhydramnios.

We report the results of intrauterine L-thyroxine therapy, and the long-term follow-up in a fetus who presented at 32 weeks' gestation with goitrous hypothyroidism, hyperextension of the neck, and polyhydramnios. Spontaneous delivery was possible and hypothyroidism improved. Molecular analysis revealed a new compound heterozygous mutation (Y453D/C800R) in the TPO gene.
