Students' problem solving in the LEGO/Logo learning environment

Contemporary society requires its citizens to develop capacities to resituate their activities in collective unities and to successfully communicate their actions within these multiple local and global communities. Also in higher education, educational practices are increasingly fixed around web-based, collaborative learning environments, designed for the values of community and collective learning. The publication presents a study that explored learning communities in technology-rich higher education milieus. The aim was to search for the conceptual origin of university students’ community and its reference point in this context. In this work, methodological tools to study, to analyse, and…
Opetusteknologia koulun arjessa 2
2011

Monimediaisen kielten opetuksen tutkimus : teknologian integroinnista pedagogiseen kehittämiseen
2015
This article offers an overview of multimodal language pedagogies as a research domain. The review starts with a chronology of the development, explores different approaches to the research and offers a sample of key studies in the field. The main focus in these key studies is on interaction, expertise and pedagogical design in multimodal environments. The overview is complemented with a discussion of the perspectives in the studies presented, and finally suggestions for future directions for development are proposed. peerReviewed
Opetusteknologia koulun arjessa
2011
Opetusteknologia on osa monen suomalaiskoulun – opettajien ja oppilaiden – arkea eri puolilla Suomea. Opetusteknologian hyödyntäminen on avannut luokkahuoneiden ovia ympäröivään maailmaan ja samalla tuonut oppimisen maailmoista kiinnostuneita tahoja lähemmäksi koulun arkea. Edelleen on kuitenkin haasteita, jotta kaikki suomalaislapset ja opettajat saadaan innovatiivisten, inspiroivien ja luovuutta edistävien oppimisympäristöjen ja -kokemusten äärelle. Tässä kirjassa esitellään kansallisen Opetusteknologia koulun arjessa -tutkimushankkeen ensimmäisiä tuloksia. Tekes-rahoitteinen hanke on koonnut yhteen tutkimusryhmiä kahdeksasta yliopistosta ja 13:sta tutkimuslaitoksesta, liikemaailman edust…
ICAnDoiT: the impact of computerised adaptive corrective feedback on L2 English learners
2016
The present dissertation examines the impact of (computerised) adaptive corrective feedback, that is, feedback dynamically adapting to learners’ abilities, in English as a second/foreign language (L2) and explores the ways to maximise this impact. The study was inspired by the sociocultural perspective on development, which had implications for the interpretation of the results, including those obtained through statistical data analyses. The dissertation comprises five articles and a synthesis. In the first article, a positive effect of adaptive corrective feedback on the learners’ ability to formulate L2 English wh-questions is established. The second article explores how learners’ beliefs…
Towards Computer-based Exams in CS1
2017
Even though IDEs are often a central tool when learning to program in CS1, many teachers still lean on paper-based exams. In this study, we examine the “test mode effect” in CS1 exams using the Rainfall problem. The test mode was two-phased. Half of the participants started working on the problem with pen and paper, while the other half had access to an IDE. After submitting their solution, all students could rework their solution on an IDE. The experiment was repeated twice during subsequent course instances. The results were mixed. From the marking perspective, there was no statistically significant difference resulting from the mode. However, the students starting with the paper-based pa…
The interplay between the guidance from the digital learning environment and the teacher in supporting folding back
2022
AbstractPrevious studies have proposed that students’ mathematical understanding develops dynamically through the process known as folding back, in which learners revisit earlier forms of understanding and use them to build even deeper levels of mathematical understanding. Digital learning environments, where students can manipulate representations, are often used to enable students to notice properties, patterns, or rules. When working in such an environment, students usually receive support from the environment and the teacher. The interplay between these different sources of support is important according to previous studies. In this study, we examine this interplay in the case of foldin…
