Investigating energy saving potential in a big shopping center through ventilation control

2019

Abstract This paper investigates energy saving measures for the ventilation system of large shopping centers. This kind of buildings is characterized by high yearly energy consumptions, because of the high level of operating hours and the frequent use of obsolete technologies. In the analyzed case studies, three big Do It Yourself (DIY) shops, located in Italy, are considered. Two different approaches are considered, they are aimed at reducing the annual energy consumption for the indoor air exchange of the sales area. The first considered retrofit solution consists in the installation of heat recovery exchangers, reducing the energy demand for the air thermal treatment without changing the…

Investigating Energy Saving Potential in a Big Shopping Centre through Ventilation Control

2018

This work shows an example of energy saving interventions on the ventilation system of a big shopping center. This kind of buildings is characterized by high energy consumptions, because of the high level of yearly operating hours and the use of obsolete technologies. In the case study, a big Do It Yourself (DIY) shop located in the southern part of Italy is analyzed, proposing two different approaches aimed at reducing the annual energy consumption for the indoor air exchange of the sales area. In the AS-IS scenario, a centralized HVAC plant, composed by six rooftops, is installed on the roof of sales area, working with fixed airflow value. The first retrofit solution involves the installa…

Skin conductance measurement for the assessment of analgosedation adequacy in infants treated with mechanical ventilation: A multicenter pilot study

2020

Background Patients treated in neonatal/pediatric intensive care units (N/PICUs) are frequently exposed to pain. To assess its severity, several behavioral and behavioral-physiological scales are used, but their usefulness is limited. It is therefore justified to search for additional methods to assess the adequacy of analgesia and sedation in these patients. Objectives To evaluate the usefulness of skin conductance (SC) measurement in the assessment of analgosedation quality in infants requiring mechanical ventilation treated in N/PICUs. Material and methods Thirty infants aged 6-208 days treated in 6 N/PICUs, mechanically ventilated and receiving analgosedation, were included for the stud…

Sedation and analgesia during noninvasive ventilation (NIV)

2017

The use of noninvasive ventilation (NIV) has increased significantly in patients with acute respiratory failure (ARF) in order to prevent tracheal intubation and its complications. Unfortunately, NIV failure represents a frequent event, with rates that in some cases reach 40%. Mask intolerance, agitation, and delirium may lead to NIV failure, thus requiring endotracheal intubation. NIV failure rates are higher in patients without chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and, when used in acute hypoxemic failure, its failure is associated with an increased mortality rate. The practice of sedation during NIV could be a valuable option for patients at risk of intubation. Sedation may decr…

Maternal and perinatal outcomes of pregnant women with SARS-CoV-2 infection

2021

WOS:000613461600006 PubMed ID: 32926494 Objectives To evaluate the maternal and perinatal outcomes of pregnancies affected by SARS-CoV-2 infection. Methods This was a multinational retrospective cohort study including women with a singleton pregnancy and laboratory-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection, conducted in 72 centers in 22 different countries in Europe, the USA, South America, Asia and Australia, between 1 February 2020 and 30 April 2020. Confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection was defined as a positive result on real-time reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assay of nasopharyngeal swab specimens. The primary outcome was a composite measure of maternal mortality and morbidity…

Differential contribution of dead space ventilation and low arterial pCO2 to exercise hyperpnea in patients with chronic heart failure secondary to i…

2003

In chronic heart failure (CHF), the abnormally large ventilatory response to exercise (VE/VCO(2) slope) has 2 conceptual elements: the requirement of restraining arterial partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO(2)) from increasing (because of an increased ratio between increased physiologic dead space and tidal volume [VD/VT]) and the depression of arterial pCO(2) by further increased ventilation, which necessarily implies an important non-carbon dioxide stimulus to ventilation. We aimed to assess the contribution of these 2 factors in determining the elevated VE/VCO(2) slope in CHF. Thirty patients with CHF underwent cardiopulmonary exercise testing (age 65 +/- 11 years, left ventricular e…

Regional Cerebral Blood Flow in Cases of Brain Tumor

1969

The present series consists of 21 patients with brain tumors: 12 malignant gliomas, 4 oligo- dendro gliomas, 3 meningeomas and 2 metastases, studied by the133Xe-gamma-clearance rCBF method. In 16 patients at least 3 determinations of rCBF were performed: a) in the resting state, R; b) during hyperventilation, HV, and c) during hypertension, HT. Of the remaining 5 patients, 1 was studied only during R, while the other 4 were submitted either to HV or to HT additionally to the R study. The average age of this series of patients was 47 years, the youngest being 19 and the oldest 64. rCBF studies had to be performed under general anesthesia (N2O + O2, Engstrom respirator) in 5 instances in whic…

The resilience of Finnish farms: Exploring the interplay between agency and structure

2020

Resilience implies, in its essence, the capacity of a system to tolerate disturbances while retaining its essential functions. In the context of agriculture, resilience thinking calls for considering the ability of farms to thrive in turbulent times along with the ability of the ecological system – in which the agricultural production is embedded – to retain its function and integrity. Resilience is a relevant conceptual tool to analyse the contradictory management demands that farms are facing within the current neoliberal market regime: being economically viable and environmentally sustainable. In this study, the resilience of farms was operationalised through farmers' perceptions concern…

On interactive multiobjective optimization with NIMBUS® in chemical process design

2005

We study multiobjective optimization problems arising from chemical process simulation. The interactive multiobjective optimization method NIMBUS®, developed at the University of Jyvaskyla, is combined with the BALAS® process simulator, developed at the VTT Technical Research Center of Finland, in order to provide a new interactive tool for designing chemical processes. Continuous interaction between the method and the designer provides a new efficient approach to explore Pareto optimal solutions and helps the designer to learn about the behaviour of the process. As an example of how the new tool can be used, we report the results of applying it in a heat recovery system design problem rela…
