Somatosensory profiles in subgroups of patients with myogenic temporomandibular disorders and Fibromyalgia Syndrome.

2009

Some patients with myofascial pain from temporomandibular disorders (TMD) report pain in extra-trigeminal body regions. Our aim was to distinguish TMD as regional musculoskeletal pain syndrome (n=23) from a widespread pain syndrome (FMS; n=18) based on patients' tender point scores, pain drawings and quantitative sensory testing (QST) profiles. Referenced to 18 age- and gender-matched healthy subjects significant group differences for cold, pressure and pinprick pain thresholds, suprathreshold pinprick sensitivity and mechanical detection thresholds were found. Pain sensitivity in TMD patients ranged between those of FMS patients and healthy controls. The group of TMD patients was inhomogen…

Intra-mandibular adenoid cystic carcinoma.

2013

Intra-mandibular localization of adenoid cystic carcinoma is rare. This tumor is characterized by progressive local, regional, and distant aggressiveness. We reviewed the latest data on this rare type of cancer with a small number of reported cases, alack of consensus for its treatment, and its bad prognosis.

Oral Thrombus: Report of 122 cases with clinically descriptive data

2017

Background The aim of the present study was to assess the frequency and characterize clinic-pathologic aspects of thrombus occurring as a single lesion or in association with other oral pathologies. Material and Methods 122 cases of thrombus from the oral cavity were retrieved. Information regarding site of the lesion, age, sex and clinical diagnosis or hypothesis and associated lesions were collected from the patients´ records. Results The lesions occurred in a wide age range but the 5th decade was the most prevalent and female patients were more affected. The most frequent site for the lesion was the lip, followed by tongue, buccal mucosa, alveolar ridge, gingiva, floor of the mouth and v…

Primordial odontogenic tumor : a systematic review

2019

Background The primordial odontogenic tumor (POT) is a recently described benign entity with histopathological and immunohistochemical features suggesting its origin during early odontogenesis. Aim: To integrate the available data published on POT into a comprehensive analysis to better define its clinicopathological and molecular features. Material and Methods An electronic systematic review was performed up to September 2019 in multiple databases. Results A total of 13 publications were included, representing 16 reported cases and 3 molecular studies. The mean age of the affected patients was 11.6 years (range 2-19), with a slight predominance in males (56.25%). The posterior mandible was…

Immunohistochemical expression of Skp2 protein in oral nevi and melanoma

2013

Objective: The aim of this study was to analyze the immunohistochemical expression of Skp2 protein in 38 oral nevi and 11 primary oral melanomas. Study Design: Expression of this ubiquitin protein was evaluated by immunohistochemistry in 49 oral melanocytic lesions, including 38 intramucosal nevi and 11 primary oral melanomas. The labeling index (LI) was assessed considering the percentage of cells expressing nuclear positivity out of the total number of cells, counting 1000 cells per slide. Results: Skp2 protein was rarely expressed in intramucosal nevi, in contrast to oral melanomas, which showed high levels of this protein. Conclusion: These results indicate that Skp2 protein may play a …

Anatomical evaluation of oral microcirculation: capillary characteristics associated with sex or age group.

2009

Abstract Background There are various types of oral mucosa specific to different parts of the mouth and each of these has a unique histological structure. The variations in the epithelial structure are consistently related to observable differences in the underlying microcirculation: i.e. differences in the course, conformation, and density of capillaries. The aim of this research has been to investigate oral microcirculatory differences between men and women as well as between various age groups, in order to map the oral mucosa, and to highlight changes occurring during aging. Methods A total of 45 healthy subjects were enrolled for this study (12 men and 33 women; mean age 60.37; range 30…

Study of microcirculation in oral lichen planus by video-capillaroscopy.

2007

Objective The aim of this study was to evaluate “in vivo” the oral microcirculatory characteristics in patients with oral lichen planus (OLP) and to discover any differences in microcirculation in comparison with healthy patients. Study design Twenty patients with established diagnosis of OLP and 20 healthy patients were examined in our laboratory by means of contact optical probe videocapillaroscopy. The examined areas for each patient were the right and the left buccal mucosae. Capillary density and total capillary diameter, as well as afferent and efferent loop diameter were studied; the discovery of characteristic (tortuous, branched) loops was also investigated. Results The results wer…

Clinical and laboratorial profile and histological features on minor salivary glands from patients under investigation for Sjogren´s syndrome

2013

Diagnosis of Sjögren's syndrome (SS) is complex and the usefulness of labial minor salivary glands biopsy in this process remains controversial. Objectives: to evaluate the clinical and laboratorial profile and histological features on labial minor salivary glands from patients under investigation of SS. Study D esign: clinical charts from 38 patients under suspicion of SS and submitted to labial minor salivary glands biopsies were reviewed. Clinical and laboratorial data were retrieved from the clinical files and the HE-stained histological slides were reviewed under light microscopy. Results: mean age of the patients was 56.5 years and 97% were females; histological analysis showed that 4…

Retrospective case-control study of viral pathogen screening in proliferative verrucous leukoplakia lesions.

2014

Objective This study aimed to survey the presence of known oncoviruses in oral biopsies from patients diagnosed with the aetiologically undetermined proliferative verrucous leukoplakia and compare results to those from milder oral leukoplakia (OL) cases, oral squamous cell carcinoma, a common outcome of the lesions of interest, and healthy controls. Design Blind, retrospective, case–control study. Setting A stomatology unit in an academic Hospital and a Public Health laboratory. Participants Forty patients were divided in four groups. Ten patients had been diagnosed with proliferative verrucous leukoplakia, 10 with OL and 10 with OSCC, and 10 were healthy subjects. Main outcome measures The…

ANO1 as a marker of oral squamous cell carcinoma and silencing ANO1 suppresses migration of human scc-25 cells

2013

Objectives: The purpose of this study is to confirm that ANO1 correlates with occurrence and metastasis of OSCC. Study Design: Immunohistochemistry was used to detect the expression of ANO1 in 160 specimens of OSCC and normal tissues. Lentiviral silencing ANO1 was used in scc-25 cell line to study the cell migration and cell detachment. Results: Immunohistochemical staining revealed that ANO1 was expressed in a large majority (132 out of 160, 82.5%) of OSCC specimens and that the rate of ANO1 expression in OSCC was significantly higher than that of normal tissue ( P 0.05). Conclusions: Our study shows that abnormal expression of ANO1 correlated with the occurrence and metastasis of OSCC in …
