Mathematical Learning Opportunities in Kindergarten through the Use of Digital Tools: Affordances and Constraints
2013
Accepted version of an article in the journal: Nordic Journal of Digital Literacy. Also available from the publisher at: http://www.idunn.no/ts/dk/2013/03/mathematical_learning_opportunities_in_kindergarten_through This study aims at scrutinising the mathematical learning opportunities of children engaging with digital tools and the emerging affordances and constraints faced in such settings. By adopting a sociocultural perspective on learning and development, the multimodal analysis of the adult-child interaction shows that the children are participants in processes of appropriating the mathematical concepts of sorting and counting. Affordances are taken advantage of by the adults and cons…
ELECTRONIC DICTIONARIES AND ESP STUDENTS
2010
This article presents the results of an experiment conducted on two distinct groups of students attending our ESP classes in the academic year 2009-2010. The first group was formed of second year students majoring in business and the second group first year students majoring in computer science. The experiment involved presenting the students with a list of traditional dictionaries as compulsory course bibliography and a list of free electronic and internet dictionaries as additional resources in an attempt to prove that, irrespective of their major subject, most students prefer freeware dictionaries for their usefulness, currentness and user-friendliness; that is why they should be taught …
CONCEPTUAL MODEL IN INTEGRATED MARKETING COMMUNICATION
2018
Integrated marketing communications are developing, with IMC approaches to communication with consumers seeing further enhancements in the scientific literature. However, in order to reach the marketing targets, a variety of IMC tools may be used in combination when implementing marketing activities. Despite each IMC tool in itself being highly distinctive, they all depend on each other in the creation of product consumption value and the enhancement of economic, communicational and social benefits. Purpose of the paper: The goal of the research is to assess the integrated marketing communications used in the marketing strategy of Latvian food retail chains. Methodology/methods: The followi…
The pre-appropriation of controlling tools : the role of the enabling management
2022
The appropriation of controlling tools is a theme that has been widely addressed research in management over the last twenty years (De Vaujany, 2005, 2006; Carton et al., 2006; Grimand, 2006, 2012, Quemener and Fimbel, 2012; Bessire et al., 2012; Bédé et al., 2012; Bernard, 2019, Couleau-Dupont, 2010, ...). This research has mobilised various theoretical frameworks and methodologies. Some mobilise the theory of appropriation proposed by De Vaujany (2005), some others use theoretical frameworks from other disciplines, such as legitimacy (Suchman, 1995), regulation theory (Reynaud, 1979) or even neo-institutional theory (Di Maggio and Powell, 1991). The literature does not propose a single fr…
Antiproliferative Activity Predictor: A New Reliable In Silico Tool for Drug Response Prediction against NCI60 Panel.
2022
In vitro antiproliferative assays still represent one of the most important tools in the anticancer drug discovery field, especially to gain insights into the mechanisms of action of anticancer small molecules. The NCI-DTP (National Cancer Institute Developmental Therapeutics Program) undoubtedly represents the most famous project aimed at rapidly testing thousands of compounds against multiple tumor cell lines (NCI60). The large amount of biological data stored in the National Cancer Institute (NCI) database and many other databases has led researchers in the fields of computational biology and medicinal chemistry to develop tools to predict the anticancer properties of new agents in advan…
Condition Monitoring Technologies for Synthetic Fiber Ropes - a Review
2020
This paper presents a review of different condition monitoring technologies for fiber ropes. Specifically, it presents an overview of the articles and patents on the subject, ranging from the early 70’s up until today with the state of the art. Experimental results are also included and discussed in a conditionmonitoring context, where failuremechanisms and changes in physical parameters give improved insight into the degradation process of fiber ropes. From this review, it is found that automatic width measurement has received surprisingly little attention, and might be a future direction for the development of a continuous condition monitoring system for synthetic fiber ropes.
Active learning in a real-world bioengineering problem: A pilot-study on ophthalmologic data processing
2019
Active learning is a format alternative to the conventional lecture/recitation/laboratory; research results have reported that it is suitable to encourage student inquiry and foster peer mentoring. Although the availability of computer-based learning materials in biomedical sciences is increasing, there are relatively few studies aimed to integrate traditional methods of teaching with inquiry-based approaches utilizing these Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) tools. This paper describes a pilot-study on a comprehensive active laboratory course about digital ophthalmologic signal classification, experienced by a group of undergraduates in Bio-Electronic Engineering. During the …
An open-source computational and data resource to analyze digital maps of immunopeptidomes
2015
We present a novel mass spectrometry-based high-throughput workflow and an open-source computational and data resource to reproducibly identify and quantify HLA-associated peptides. Collectively, the resources support the generation of HLA allele-specific peptide assay libraries consisting of consensus fragment ion spectra, and the analysis of quantitative digital maps of HLA peptidomes generated from a range of biological sources by SWATH mass spectrometry (MS). This study represents the first community-based effort to develop a robust platform for the reproducible and quantitative measurement of the entire repertoire of peptides presented by HLA molecules, an essential step towards the de…
Architecture in the digital age. Evolution of language and contemporary design.
2012
The ‘computer revolution’ is the most obvious phenomenon of our time. The new capabilities introduced by the digital drafting have triggered a substantial evolution of the relationship between representation and design. The diffusion of digital technologies in Architecture has opened new frontiers in the design field, stimulating the development of a new expressive language that promotes generating complex shapes. On the other hand, the shape often becomes the main interest of the designers. Then, is the project only a formal question? Are the glamour images become the main target to which the ‘New Architecture’ aims?
