Trochoidal motion and pair generation in skyrmion and antiskyrmion dynamics under spin-orbit torques

2018

Magnetic skyrmions are swirling magnetic spin structures that could be used to build next-generation memory and logic devices. They can be characterized by a topological charge that describes how the spin winds around the core. The dynamics of skyrmions and antiskyrmions, which have opposite topological charges, are typically described by assuming a rigid core. However, this reduces the set of variables that describe skyrmion motion. Here we theoretically explore the dynamics of skyrmions and antiskyrmions in ultrathin ferromagnetic films and show that current-induced spin–orbit torques can lead to trochoidal motion and skyrmion–antiskyrmion pair generation, which occurs only for either the…

Surface structure promoted high-yield growth and magnetotransport properties of Bi2Se3 nanoribbons

2019

AbstractIn the present work, a catalyst-free physical vapour deposition method is used to synthesize high yield of Bi2Se3 nanoribbons. By replacing standard glass or quartz substrates with aluminium covered with ultrathin porous anodized aluminium oxide (AAO), the number of synthesized nanoribbons per unit area can be increased by 20–100 times. The mechanisms of formation and yield of the nanoribbons synthesized on AAO substrates having different arrangement and size of pores are analysed and discussed. It is shown that the yield and average length of the nanoribbons can base tuned by adjustment of the synthesis parameters. Analysis of magnetotransport measurements for the individual Bi2Se3…

Effect of graphene substrate type on formation of Bi2Se3 nanoplates

2019

AbstractKnowledge of nucleation and further growth of Bi2Se3 nanoplates on different substrates is crucial for obtaining ultrathin nanostructures and films of this material by physical vapour deposition technique. In this work, Bi2Se3 nanoplates were deposited under the same experimental conditions on different types of graphene substrates (as-transferred and post-annealed chemical vapour deposition grown monolayer graphene, monolayer graphene grown on silicon carbide substrate). Dimensions of the nanoplates deposited on graphene substrates were compared with the dimensions of the nanoplates deposited on mechanically exfoliated mica and highly ordered pyrolytic graphite flakes used as refer…

Evolutionary stability of topologically associating domains is associated with conserved gene regulation

2018

AbstractBackgroundThe human genome is highly organized in the three-dimensional nucleus. Chromosomes fold locally into topologically associating domains (TADs) defined by increased intra-domain chromatin contacts. TADs contribute to gene regulation by restricting chromatin interactions of regulatory sequences, such as enhancers, with their target genes. Disruption of TADs can result in altered gene expression and is associated to genetic diseases and cancers. However, it is not clear to which extent TAD regions are conserved in evolution and whether disruption of TADs by evolutionary rearrangements can alter gene expression.ResultsHere, we hypothesize that TADs represent essential functiona…

Uhlmann number in translational invariant systems

2019

We define the Uhlmann number as an extension of the Chern number, and we use this quantity to describe the topology of 2D translational invariant Fermionic systems at finite temperature. We consider two paradigmatic systems and we study the changes in their topology through the Uhlmann number. Through the linear response theory we linked two geometrical quantities of the system, the mean Uhlmann curvature and the Uhlmann number, to directly measurable physical quantities, i.e. the dynamical susceptibility and to the dynamical conductivity, respectively.

A topological look at human trabecular bone tissue

2017

Bone quality is affected by trabecular architecture at microscopic level. Various abnormalities of bone tissue lead to altered strength and to an increased susceptibility to fracture, such as Osteoporosis and Osteoarthritis, two major health burdens of our society. These are two complex musculoskeletal diseases that mainly concern bone tissue. In the last twenty years, there has been a growing interest in finding an appropriate topological model for the micro-architecture of trabecular bone tissue. In particular, we prove that these models involve general topological spaces. The appropriate notion to deal with is that of CW-complex.

On the Almost Everywhere Convergence of Multiple Fourier-Haar Series

2019

The paper deals with the question of convergence of multiple Fourier-Haar series with partial sums taken over homothetic copies of a given convex bounded set $$W\subset\mathbb{R}_+^n$$ containing the intersection of some neighborhood of the origin with $$\mathbb{R}_+^n$$ . It is proved that for this type sets W with symmetric structure it is guaranteed almost everywhere convergence of Fourier-Haar series of any function from the class L(ln+L)n−1.

Group topologies coarser than the Isbell topology

2011

Abstract The Isbell, compact-open and point-open topologies on the set C ( X , R ) of continuous real-valued maps can be represented as the dual topologies with respect to some collections α ( X ) of compact families of open subsets of a topological space X . Those α ( X ) for which addition is jointly continuous at the zero function in C α ( X , R ) are characterized, and sufficient conditions for translations to be continuous are found. As a result, collections α ( X ) for which C α ( X , R ) is a topological vector space are defined canonically. The Isbell topology coincides with this vector space topology if and only if X is infraconsonant. Examples based on measure theoretic methods, t…

Cardinal estimates involving the weak Lindelöf game

2021

AbstractWe show that if X is a first-countable Urysohn space where player II has a winning strategy in the game $$G^{\omega _1}_1({\mathcal {O}}, {\mathcal {O}}_D)$$ G 1 ω 1 ( O , O D ) (the weak Lindelöf game of length $$\omega _1$$ ω 1 ) then X has cardinality at most continuum. This may be considered a partial answer to an old question of Bell, Ginsburg and Woods. It is also the best result of this kind since there are Hausdorff first-countable spaces of arbitrarily large cardinality where player II has a winning strategy even in the weak Lindelöf game of countable length. We also tackle the problem of finding a bound on the cardinality of a first-countable space where player II has a wi…

Extensions of hermitian linear functionals

2022

AbstractWe study, from a quite general point of view, the family of all extensions of a positive hermitian linear functional $$\omega $$ ω , defined on a dense *-subalgebra $${\mathfrak {A}}_0$$ A 0 of a topological *-algebra $${\mathfrak {A}}[\tau ]$$ A [ τ ] , with the aim of finding extensions that behave regularly. The sole constraint the extensions we are dealing with are required to satisfy is that their domain is a subspace of $$\overline{G(\omega )}$$ G ( ω ) ¯ , the closure of the graph of $$\omega $$ ω (these are the so-called slight extensions). The main results are two. The first is having characterized those elements of $${\mathfrak {A}}$$ A for which we can find a positive her…
