The aim of our study is to estimate the hepatoprotective effects of the ethanolic extract of the leaves of Sequoia sempervirens by determination of liver biomarkers (ALT, AST, total bilirubin and albumin in serum) and by histopathological examinations using thioacetamide-induced (TAA) liver injury model. Concurrent administration of ethanolic extracts of S. sempervirens leaves improved the alterations in liver morphology where it was a potent protector of the liver. The potential of L-phenylalanine and silver nitrate as chemical elicitors as well as UV radiation as a physical elicitor on flavonoid production in callus culture of S. sempervirens were emphasized. Phenomenology was born as an attack against the false constructions of traditional philosophy. Nevenheless, it soon discovered that it had an important bond to Plato's, Descartes' or Kant's philosophical systems. As I show in this paper, both in Heidegger and in Husserl's last writings, the philosophical endeavor is interpreted as a retrieval of earlier philosophical intentions. However, this does not lead them to a common interpretation of the meaning of philosophy's history.
Traditional use of medicinal agents: a valid source of evidence

Traditional knowledge uncovered by serious historical research may help to identify new therapeutic agents. It also plays a part in safety evaluation and drug regulation. So far, however, this way of gaining knowledge is very much neglected in the concept of evidence based medicine, which is in no way contradictory to traditional use. Thus, the true meaning of the word 'tradition' is described, while reliable historical sources are quoted. It is then shown how research into the traditional use of medicinal plants is able to reveal knowledge about efficacy and safety of natural products. This article proposes a study of the traditions in defensive architecture that concurred in the projects designed by Spanish military engineers for the fortification of the Valencian frontier in 1648 and 1649, in the context of the War of Catalonia (1640-1652). For this it is essential to follow the route of the Valencian adaptations to the military revolution in the matter of fortifications throughout the sixteenth century and compare them with those brought to Valencia in 1641 by the Marquis of Leganes and his engineers from the school of Milan.
Effects on Arterial Blood Pressure of Methanol and Dichloromethanol Extracts fromJuniperus oxycedrus L.

The present study analysed the effect of the methanol and dichloromethanol extracts from Juniperus oxycedrus on arterial blood pressure in anaesthetized rats. The arterial blood pressure of normotensive rats was significantly reduced by the i.v. administration of both extracts. The hypotensive effect of these extracts was independent of the adrenergic system. These results may explain the vasorelaxing actions observed in other Juniperus species.

AbstractThe present studies were undertaken to confirm the hypotensive effect of Pistacia lentiscus L. in normotensive urethane anaesthetized Wistar rats. It was shown that lyophilized aqueous extract caused a dose-dependent decreased of the systemic arterial blood pressure. Acute toxicity was also determined. Phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of steroids-triterpenes, catechin tannins, flavonoids, sugars, resins and saponins.
