LRP1 modulates APP trafficking along early compartments of the secretory pathway
2008
The amyloid beta peptide (A beta) is a central player in Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology. A beta liberation depends on APP cleavage by beta- and gamma-secretases. The low density lipoprotein receptor related protein 1 (LRP1) was shown to mediate APP processing at multiple steps. Newly synthesized LRP1 can interact with APP, implying an interaction between these two proteins early in the secretory pathway. We wanted to investigate whether LRP1 mediates APP trafficking along the secretory pathway, and, if so, whether it affects APP processing. Indeed, the early trafficking of APP within the secretory pathway is strongly influenced by its interaction with the C-terminal domain of LRP1. The …
Achieving Intelligent Traffic-aware Consolidation of Virtual Machines in a Data Center Using Learning Automata
2016
Cloud Computing (CC) is becoming increasingly pertinent and popular. A natural consequence of this is that many modern-day data centers experience very high internal traffic within the data centers themselves. The VMs with high mutual traffic often end up being far apart in the data center network, forcing them to communicate over unnecessarily long distances. The consequent traffic bottlenecks negatively affect both the performance of the application and the network in its entirety, posing nontrivial challenges for the administrators of these cloudbased data centers. The problem can, quite naturally, be compartmentalized into two phases which follow each other. First of all, the VMs are co…
The effects of anthropogenic particulate emissions on roadway dust and Nerium oleander leaves in Messina (Sicily, Italy)
2003
Complementary studies on the inorganic chemical composition of Nerium oleander leaves collected in the town of Messina (Sicily, Italy) and seven grain-size fractions of local roadway dust have been carried out. Data and maps are presented to show that the particulate matter present in the air of Messina contains trace elements significantly in excess with respect to the average continental earth crust. The anomalies follow the outline of the urban area, the highest concentrations of trace elements being observed where traffic density is highest. Chemical and isotopic analyses of both road dust and Nerium oleander leaves indicate that Pb contamination still characterizes roads with heavy tra…
Efficiency Analysis Of Resource Request Patterns In Classification Of Web Robots And Humans
2018
The paper deals with the problem of classification of Web traffic generated by robots and humans on e-commerce websites. Due to the still growing proliferation and specialization of bots, a large body of research into characterization and recognition of their traffic has been conducted so far. In particular, some approaches to classify bot and human sessions on websites have been proposed in the literature. In this paper we verify and discuss the efficiency of such recently proposed approach, which uses differences in resource request patterns of bots and humans. We reconstructed Web sessions from actual HTTP log data for three different e-commerce sites, varying in the traffic intensity an…
Comparing the cycling behaviours of Australian, Chinese and Colombian cyclists using a behavioural questionnaire paradigm.
2020
Cyclists are vulnerable road users and face disproportionately high rates of road trauma, especially in low- and middle-income countries. Behaviour of road users is a system outcome, and thus studying cyclist behaviours can identify problems in the whole road transport system and assist in generating long-lasting, cost-effective solutions to promote cyclist safety. This study aims to investigate the similarities and disparities of cycling behaviour among countries with different income levels and cycling prevalence, and the relationships among cyclist demographic characteristics, behaviours and crash involvement. It applies the Cycling Behaviour Questionnaire (CBQ) to measure the behaviour …
Occurrence of palladium and platinum in human scalp hair of adolescents living in urban and industrial sites
2023
Platinum group elements (PGEs) can be naturally found at very low concentrations in the Earth's crust. However, the increasing uses of PGEs in vehicle exhaust catalysts, in addition to some other applications (industry, jewelry, anticancer drugs) cause their anthropogenic emission and dispersion in the environment. The use of human hair samples analysis is considered a suitable biological indicator to assess human occupational and environmental exposure. It is an easily accessible material for individuals or population groups of non-invasive sampling. The aim of this study is a comparative analysis to investigate human hair content of Pd and Pt in adolescents, of both genders, residing near…
Human smuggling and human trafficking. A normative and criminological outline
2021
Human smuggling and human trafficking are, from a normative point of view, strictly separated but frequently, at a criminological level, they overlap in a tangled-up situation in which it is not easy to separate them. This gap could have serious consequences in the fight against the criminal phenomena. In this brief contribution, I will try to show the extent of this gap and its consequences. Firstly, I will focus on the normative approach on HS and HT. Secondly, I will give a brief criminal outline of the two phenomena. Finally, I will try to underline the inadequacy of the dominating normative point of view.
The dark side of the laws against human trafficking: the need for a new, not exclusively criminal approach in a global world perspective
2014
Human trafficking is a question cannot be solved by a mere criminal law point of view. The dark side of the law is that in reality instead of a punishment against criminals, we have increased the punishment of the irregular or clandestine migrants I.e. The real victims. On the contrary, we need a different loom providing for massive international cooperation and collaboration with the weak and developing countries; we also need to fight the irregular immigration not only with a narrow criminal law or statutory approach, but also in a multidisciplinary way using the instruments offered by private law and European and international law as for instance the consumer protection or competition la…
