L'escriptor, de llengua en llengua. Joan Fuster i les traduccions
2006
This work approaches the study of the relationship between the figure of the translator and that of the writer in the framework of translating activities related to the Catalan language. In the person of Joan Fuster both sides are combined: he is an author translated into other languages, such as Spanish, English or Italian and he is, at the same time, a translator himself of European literary works, especially of Ignazio Silone and particularly Albert Camus. Both figures appear in the 20th century literature as an example of the intellectual who struggled among intellectual freedom and social and political commitment. The argument focuses on the active role Fuster had regarding the recepti…
Les glosses de Guillem Nicolau a la seva traducció de les 'Heroides' d'Ovidi (1390) : una proposta d'identificació
2021
According to a letter written in 1390, Guillem Nicolau attached a full commentary to his Catalan translation of Ovid’s Heroides. Although these glosses have not survived in any of the extant manuscripts of this translation, they have been preserved in a fifteenth-century manuscript containing an anonymous Castilian version of the Catalan text. In this article, the linguistic- and literary-based identification of these Castilian glosses with those written by Nicolau leads to a further examination of the relationship of the Catalan Heroides to the Latin commentary tradition. Evidence is given of Nicolau having used a Latin manuscript containing accessus and glosses from William of Orléans Bur…
El nou paradigma dels estudis de traducció: (notes arran d'un article de Mona Baker)
2006
This introduction tries to contextualize Mona Baker’s article in this same issue by revising her personal evolution in the field of Translation Studies, as well as by introducing some of the key notions tackled in her paper. The introduction mainly deals with the turn of Translation Studies into a new ideological paradigm which tries to overcome the alleged scientific and aseptic methodology of Descriptive Translation Studies. The concepts of descriptive methodology, ideology, frame and narrative theory are also discussed, with some examples of recent events. Attention is also paid to the Catalan context, where translations and language use also obey to certain ideological and political age…
Cytoplasmic 5′-3′ exonuclease Xrn1p is also a genome-wide transcription factor in yeast
2014
The 5′ to 3′ exoribonuclease Xrn1 is a large protein involved in cytoplasmatic mRNA degradation as a critical component of the major decaysome. Its deletion in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae is not lethal, but it has multiple physiological effects. In a previous study, our group showed that deletion of all tested components of the yeast major decaysome, including XRN1, results in a decrease in the synthetic rate and an increase in half-life of most mRNAs in a compensatory manner. Furthermore, the same study showed that the all tested decaysome components are also nuclear proteins that bind to the 5′ region of a number of genes. In the present work, we show that disruption of Xrn1 activi…
language and law in international business law
2009
The relationship between language and law is clearly apparent in international organizations. More specifically, international commercial relations show a field of analysis still remains wide clearing. The choice of language is very widely, in international trade, depending on the wish of the parties. The question of free choice is central to the study of the relationship between language and law. But the choice of language is often done without consideration of legal risks, particularly the consequences as regards the implementation and interpretation of the contract. The language issue is generally treated only as incidental, accidental, although it is necessary to comply with a certain n…
Stance bundles in English-to-Polish Translation: a Corpus-Informed Study
2018
In this paper, we make an attempt to improve the textual fit of English-to-Polish translation of a peculiar type of multi-word units known in corpus linguistic literature as lexical bundles (Biber et al. 1999). Inspired by a study conducted by Grabar and Lefer (2015), we used the English-Polish parallel corpus Paralela (Pęzik 2016) and the National Corpus of Polish (NKJP) to extract and explore the use — in terms of frequency distributions — of the Polish equivalents of selected English lexical bundles expressing attitudinal and epistemic stance. More precisely, we used the NKJP corpus to check whether the Polish equivalents are typical of contemporary Polish as found in native texts. The r…
Consumers' attitude towards rice cooking processes in Korea, Japan, Thailand and France
2013
UT: 000317947100009; International audience; Concerns and attitudes towards nutrition, health, safety, commodity, and sensory appeal are the factors determining cooking processes in one's everyday life. A picture-word matching task was conducted in order to compare consumer's opinion on seven common rice-cooking processes (rinsing, soaking, adding other kinds of rice, cereals, and beans, brown rice germination, rapid-boiling, pressure-cooking, and steaming) in Korea, Japan, Thailand, and France. The results showed that, in each country, the more familiar a cooking process is, the more it is associated with sensory quality. Pressure-cooking, soaking and rapid-boiling were positively matched …
Jurons et interjections dans l'univers de Tintin: modifications, élargissement et reduction de sens dans les traductions italiennes.
2014
Swear words and interjections in the world of Tintin: changes, enlargement and reduction of meaning in Italian translations. Tintin is one of the best known all over the world French language comics. Even in Italy Tintin has been translated and published. Starting from a linguistic analysis on Haddock’s swearwords, one of the best friend of Tintin, we will observe the Italian translations (four editions from 1965 to 2011) of the French album Le crabe aux pinces d’or.
Literāru tekstu mašīntulkojumu un cilvēka tulkojumu no franču un angļu valodas latviešu valodā salīdzinošā analīze
2018
Mašīntulkošanas ietekme tulkošanas jomā ir krietni pieaugusi, taču literāru tekstu tulkošanā tā tiek izmantota reti to sarežģītības dēļ.
The character name translations in the Finnish translation of Terry Pratchett’s Lords and Ladies
2009
Tämän proseminaarityön tarkoituksena oli tutkia minkälaisia käännösratkaisuja on hyödynnetty suomennettaessa henkilönimiä Terry Pratchettin kirjassa Lords and Ladies (suomeksi Herraskaista väkeä).
