Drug delivery to the central nervous system (CNS) is subject to the permeability limitations imposed by the blood-brain barrier (BBB). Several systems in vitro have been described to reproduce the physical and biochemical behavior of intact BBB, most of which lack the feature of the in vivo barrier. We developed a fully formed monolayer of RBE4.B immortalized rat brain microvessel endothelial cells (ECs), grown on top of polycarbonate filter inserts with cortical neuronal cells grown on the outside. Ovicide-induced serosa degeneration and its impact on embryonic development in Manduca sexta (Insecta: Lepidoptera)

Abstract Eggs of Manduca sexta treated with the ovicide Ov. 165049 turn orange, and the embryos later die. The orange pigmentation is at first confined to the serosa, and is accompanied by pathological changes of serosal cells. Lipid vesicles aggregate and spindle-shaped electron-lucent vesicles—normally forming a single layer below the apical cell surface—greatly accumulate. The mitochondria swell considerably, and their matrices become electron-lucent. Subsequently, the serosal cells develop additional features of necrosis. Introduction Rat liver epoxide hydratase [EC 4.2.1.631 which catalyses the conversion of epoxides to trurans-dihydro- diols has been purified to apparent homogeneity as determined by three independent criteria [l] . The preparation obtained was capable of catalysing the hydration of both styrene oxide and the 4,5- (K- region)epoxide of benzo(a)pyrene [ 11. Epoxides of polycyclic hydrocarbons have been implicated as the agents responsible for the cytotoxic and carcinogenic properties of such compounds (for reviews see [2-41). Regional distribution of high-affinity L-tryptophan uptake in rat brain

Abstract L-tryptophan is accumulated by slices of seven regions of the rat brain in a saturable, energy-depending fashion, with K m -values ranging from 53 to 142 μM. The maximal number of L-tryptophan accumulating sites differs only by about two-fold for the brain regions investigated. The regional distribution of the high-affinity L-tryptophan uptake does not correlate with the amount of serotonin synaptosomal uptake and apparent receptor binding. It is assumed that a specific role of the L-tryptophan uptake system within the serotoninergic system in the brain is questionable.

The endocannabinoid system (ECS) possesses neuromodulatory functions by influencing the release of various neurotransmitters, including GABA, noradrenaline, dopamine, glutamate and acetylcholine. Even though there are studies indicating similar interactions between the ECS and the serotonergic system, there are no results showing clear evidence for type 1 cannabinoid receptor (CB1) location on serotonergic neurons. The vestibule loop regions of aquaglyceroporins are involved in accumulation of glycerol inside the channel pore. Even though most loop regions do not show high sequence similarity among aquaglyceroporins, loop E is highly conserved in aquaglyceroporins, but not in members of the homologous aquaporins. Specifically, a tryptophan residue is extremely conserved within this loop. We have investigated the role of this residue (Trp219) that deeply protrudes into the protein and potentially interacts with adjacent loops, using the E. coli aqualgyeroporin GlpF as a model. HPLC-SEC: a new approach to characterise complex wastewater effluents

ABSTRACTThis work investigates the use of HPLC-SEC to characterise dissolved organic matter (DOM) of complex wastewater effluents. A silica-based column, sodium acetate eluent and multiple detections were employed: UV-254 absorbance for humictype, and tryptophan-like (Ex/Em = 270/355) and tyrosine-like (Ex/Em = 270/310) fluorescence for protein type compounds. Effects of eluent pH, eluent ionic strength and injection volume on separation efficiency were tested. The protein content and amino acid profile of three milk-based infant formulas, two of which were powdered (adapted and follow-on) and the third liquid, were determined to check their compliance with the EU directive and to evaluate whether or not they fulfil an infant's nutritional needs.
