Fixed versus Growth Mindset Does not Seem to Matter Much
2018
Psychology predicts that a student’s mindset—their implicit theory of intelligence—has an effect on their academic performance. We attempted to corroborate this in the computer science education context by asking the students on two bachelor-level courses, typically taken in the third year of studies, to fill out a standard mindset questionnaire, and analyzing their answers in relation to their grades on those courses. In a sample of 133 students, with only 24 (18 %) students with a clear fixed mindset, there is no detectable correlation between the students’ mindsets and their course grades. An ordinal logistic regression estimates, at the 95 % confidence level, a statistically nonsignific…
Koulujen henkilökunnan kokemukset oppilaiden hyvinvoinnista COVID-19-etäkouluaikana : "Osa puhkesi kukkaan. Muutamat pitivät rimaa alhaalla."
2020
Sosiaalinen vuorovaikutus muutti muotoaan, mikä toi monista oppilaista esille uusia puolia. Oppilas-opettaja-vuorovaikutuksen koettiin kehittyneen erilaisten ja yksilöllisempien yhteydenpi…

Socially phobic clients' self-descriptions, treatment progress and reflexivity in short-term cognitive-constructivist group psychotherapy
2017
The aim of the research was to get information about different kinds of clients with social phobia and their therapeutic progress in cognitive-constructivist group psychotherapy. The aim was also to offer relevant information to clinicians working with socially phobic clients on how they could help the progress of the successful therapeutic change process of socially phobic clients, especially in early phases of the therapy when clients are developing a reflexive stance toward their own problematic experiences. Study I supported the view that negative self-image is central to social phobia, but this ranged from total piteousness to relatively few negative feelings of insufficiency. Three su…

CLIL Implementation in Greece : Empirical Findings from 2006 to 2020
2023
Abstract Despite the increasing interest in CLIL in Greece over the past decade, Greek CLIL research is largely absent from international review studies. This systematic review focuses on primary and secondary education, and examines peer-reviewed empirical research on CLIL implementation in Greece from 2006 to 2020. A total of 33 items are reviewed using qualitative Content Analysis. Organized according to commonalities shared by their foci, the reviewed items highlight three main research areas of CLIL implementation in Greece: (1) CLIL project evaluation, (2) CLIL students’ development, and (3) CLIL teachers. The reviewed studies suggest that CLIL implementation in Greece tends to be qua…

DEBATE: Do interventions based on behavioral theory work in the real world?
2019
Background: Behavioral scientists suggest that for behavior change interventions to work effectively, and deliver population-level health outcomes, they must be underpinned by behavioral theory. However, despite implementation of such interventions, population levels of both health outcomes and linked behaviors have remained relatively static. We debate the extent to which interventions based on behavioral theory work in the real world to address population health outcomes. Discussion: Hagger argues there is substantive evidence supporting the efficacy and effectiveness of interventions based on behavioral theory in promoting population-level health behavior change in the ‘real world’. Howe…
Informal learning and wellbeing outcomes of gameplay and their associations with gameplay motivation
2023
Educational functions of digital games are often seen only in the light of the serious and purposeful activities that aim for learning outcomes, in contrast with noneducational games that are designed for entertainment. The focus of this paper is in studying players’ learning outcomes from playing non-educational games, and how these relate to wellbeing outcomes of playing, and gaming motivation. The data for this study was collected via a survey (N = 1,202) in the United Kingdom and the United States. The survey respondents answered the question regarding what players perceive they have learnt by playing digital games. A generic datadriven qualitative content analysis of the responses to t…
Player perceptions of informal learning in non-educational games
2022
The potential of non-educational games in learning is well-established, but there have been relatively few empirical studies attempting to explore the kinds of informal learning take place in non-educational games outside of formal education. Simultaneously, student motivation is known to have a connection to learning outcomes, but there is a lack of research on the relationship between gaming motivations and informal learning in games. This paper aims to fill the gap in research by, firstly, forming an empirically-based understanding of what players perceive they are learning from playing non-educational games, and secondly, exploring the potential connections of self-articulated learning …
