Echinostoma caproni (Trematoda): differential in vivo cytokine responses in high and low compatible hosts.

In order to investigate the factors determining the expulsion of intestinal trematodes, we have analyzed the in vivo cytokine responses at several levels and the local responses against Echinostoma caproni (Trematoda) in two host species displaying different compatibility with the parasite. The response of the high compatible host (mice) is characterized by a mixed Th1/Th2 phenotype in the spleen, Peyer's patches and mesenteric lymph nodes. Secondary Osseous Integration of Cementless Unicompartmental Knee Arthroplasty After Internal Fixation of a Felix Type IIIB Fracture

Case A 76-year-old man presented with periprosthetic tibial plateau fracture (TPF), with a completely loosened tibial component 3 weeks after cementless unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA). Internal fixation by buttress plating was performed, and the tibial component was retained and left in situ primarily as a spacer. Revision was planned after fracture consolidation, but at 3 months, the patient was able to walk without support, without pain, and with full range of motion. At 1 year, he is free of complaints. Nebivolol is a β 1 -receptor antagonist with vasodilator and antioxidant properties. Because the vascular NADPH oxidase is an important superoxide source, we studied the effect of nebivolol on endothelial function and NADPH oxidase activity and expression in the well-characterized model of angiotensin II–induced hypertension. Diagnostic use of fructosamine assay in the control of type II diabetes mellitus.

In an attempt to evaluate the usefulness of fructosamine assay in monitoring type II diabetes, 142 diabetic patients were investigated. Fructosamine values were found to be higher in patients on insulin treatment than on oral hypoglycemic agents. In order to evaluate the metabolic control by using the correlated variations of F, Gm and HbAlc, the patients were subdivided into many control classes: mean values of fructosamine were higher in poorly controlled patients. Fructosamine however correlated better with glycemia in patients with recent variations in metabolic state than HbAlc. The aim of this study was to quantitatively analyse methanotrophs in two laboratory landfill biofilters at different biofilter depths and at temperatures which mimicked the boreal climatic conditions. Both biofilters were dominated by type I methanotrophs. The biofilter depth profiles showed that type I methanotrophs occurred in the upper layer, where relatively high O(2) and low CH(4) concentrations were present, whereas type II methanotrophs were mostly distributed in the zone with high CH(4) and low O(2) concentrations. Comparative sequence analysis of a 423-bp segment of the gyrA gene including a region homologous to the quinolone resistance-determining region (QRDR) of other species was evaluated as a novel typing method for Legionella strains. The study was performed with 29 reference strains representing 11 different Legionella species, with various serogroups, and with 13 clinical isolates of L. pneumophila.
