Thermodiffusion of sodium polystyrene sulfonate in a supporting electrolyte
2019
Thermodiffusion, or the Soret phenomenon, is well understood in simple systems, but in multicomponent and polyvalent electrolyte systems the process becomes more complicated due to the coupling of fluxes. We experimentally investigate the time evolution of a concentration gradient generated by thermodiffusion of a polyelectrolyte (poly(sodium 4-styrene sulfonate), NaPSS) in a 1:1 supporting electrolyte. We also derive and solve the transport equations that are used to extract the Soret coefficient from the experimental observations. It is shown that NaPSS thermodiffusion in NaCl is strongly dependent on concentration, with almost 100% thermal separation in concentrations below 15 nmol L−1. …
Multifunctional clickable and protein-repellent magnetic silica nanoparticles
2016
Silica nanoparticles are versatile materials whose physicochemical surface properties can be precisely adjusted. Because it is possible to combine several functionalities in a single carrier, silica-based materials are excellent candidates for biomedical applications. However, the functionality of the nanoparticles can get lost upon exposure to biological media due to uncontrolled biomolecule adsorption. Therefore, it is important to develop strategies that reduce non-specific protein-particle interactions without losing the introduced surface functionality. Herein, organosilane chemistry is employed to produce magnetic silica nanoparticles bearing differing amounts of amino and alkene func…
Random Copolymers: Their Solution Thermodynamics as Compared with That of the Corresponding Homopolymers
2008
Vapor pressure data (at 50 °C) of solutions of poly(methyl methacrylate) [PMMA], polystyrene [PS], and poly(styrene-ran-methyl methacrylate) [P(S-ran-MMA)], with different weight fractions f of styrene units, in either CHCl3, acetone [AC], methyl acetate [MeAc], or toluene [TL] were evaluated with respect to the dependence of the Flory−Huggins interaction parameter χ on polymer concentration and on f. For all solutions under investigation, χ varies considerably with the composition of the mixture, and only for four of them [CHCl3/PS, AC/PMMA, MeAc/PS, and TL/P(S-ran-MMA) f = 0.5] is this dependence linear; another four systems exhibit a minimum [CHCl3/PMMA, CHCl3/P(S-ran-MMA) f = 0.5, TL/PM…
Photonic effect study on polystyrene 3D-photonic crystals at near-field range: dependence on the wavelength and on the lattice parameter
2007
3D-photonic crystals (opals) based on polystyrene (PS) colloidal nanospheres are being characterized by scanning near-field optical microscopy (SNOM). These crystals offer a huge potential for controlling both the spontaneous emission of embedded light sources and the propagation of light itself.
Chemical Modification of Nitrile to Oxazoline Functionality on a Styrene-Acrylonitrile Copolymer in the Melt
1998
Oxazoline is a very interesting functionality for reactive extrusion and other applications. In this paper, we report the possibility of chemically transforming nitrile group attached to a copolymer of styrene and acrylonitrile (SAN) to oxazoline group using 2-amino-ethanol (AE). The chemical modification of SAN with AE was done in the molten state. Among various catalysts tested, zinc acetate turned out to be the most efficient. The effects of the catalyst concentration, temperature and mixing on the overall kinetics were studied. The formation of the expected oxazoline functionality was confirmed by infrared spectroscopy and by reacting with 1-naphthylacetic acid. The reaction between the…
Tyre rubber-modified bitumens development: the effect of varying processing conditions
2013
Tyre rubber-modified binders (TR-MBs), produced through McDonald’s wet process and used worldwide (e.g. asphalt rubber), have been demonstrated to provide various benefits to pavements and, moreover, they represent a good opportunity for recycling tyre rubber (TR). However, this technology is still struggling to be fully adopted in Europe, mainly because of their poor stability during high temperatures storage, which leads to high initial costs in modifying existing asphalt plants. Storage stable TR-MBs are proving to be a great option and their development could be the key to spread the recycling of TR within paving applications in Europe. This paper aims to enrich this field of research b…
Holographic properties of azobenzene oligomers with differently bonded chromophore groups
2007
Holographic properties of two types (I and II, specified in the text) of azobenzene oligomers (ABO) have been experimentally studied in the spectral region of low absorption at 633 nm. In the case of type I ABO the chromophore groups were covalently bonded to either tolyl-polyurethane or hexamethylene-polyurethane matrix. In the case of type II ABO azobenzene chromophores were dispersed in polystyrene matrix, and their concentration was varied from 0.005 to 0.200 mol/l. Samples were in the form of 10 µm thick films. In both cases the diffraction efficiency exposure time dependences were measured for the holographic grating period of 2 (m at 633 nm. The diffraction efficiency of more than 2%…
Morphology of hybrid polystyrene-block-poly(ethylene oxide) micelles: Analytical ultracentrifugation and SANS studies
2006
Abstract Morphology and structure of aqueous block copolymer solutions based on polystyrene- block -poly(ethylene oxide) (PS- b -PEO) of two different compositions, a cationic surfactant, cetyl pyridinium chloride (CPC), and either platinic acid (H 2 PtCl 6 ⋅6H 2 O) or Pt nanoparticles were studied using a combination of analytical ultracentrifugation (AUC), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and small angle neutron scattering (SANS). These studies combining methods contributing supplemental and analogous structural information allowed us to comprehensively characterize the complex hybrid systems and to discover an isotope effect when H 2 O was replaced with D 2 O. In particular, TEM s…
3-acetylaltholactone and related styryl-lactones, mitochondrial respiratory chain inhibitors.
2000
A novel furano-pyrone, 3-acetylaltholactone, and two other known styryl-lactones, altholactone and 5-acetoxyisogoniothalamin oxide, have been isolated from Goniothalamus arvensis (Annonaceae) stem bark. We report here the isolation and structural elucidation of these compounds with furane-pyrone and styryl-pyrone skeletons, postulating also for the first time their mechanism of cytotoxicity based on inhibition on mammalian mitochondrial respiratory chain.
