Korkeakoulutuksesta liikunta-alan muuttuville työmarkkinoille : liikunnan yhteiskuntatieteiden koulutusohjelmasta vuosina 2000-2014 valmistuneiden ma…

2015

Moni liikunnan yhteiskuntatieteiden opiskelija joutuu opintojensa aikana pohtimaan, minkälaisiin työtehtäviin he voivat koulutuksensa myötä päätyä, ja tulevaisuuden suunta on mahdollisesti vielä valmistumisen jälkeenkin epäselvä. Myös nykyisten työmarkkinoiden luonne saattaa herättää epävarmuutta työllistymistä ajatellen. Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli selvittää, miten liikunnan yhteiskuntatieteiden koulutusohjelmasta vuosien 2000–2014 aikana valmistuneet maisterit ovat sijoittuneet työelämään. Lisäksi tutkittiin, miten liikunnan yhteiskuntatieteiden koulutus vastaa työelämän vaatimuksia ja minkälaiset edellytykset koulutus on luonut liikunta-alan asiantuntijuudelle. Tutkimus toteutett…

Social media as a place to see and be seen : Exploring factors affecting job attainment via social media

2023

Job seekers can utilize social media platforms to actively search for job opportunities and also receive unsolicited job offers from recruiters and employers. Using data from a representative sample of Finnish social media users, this article studies both aspects of social media job attainment by analyzing how much individuals successfully apply for jobs and get recruited to positions through social media. Results show that the prevalence of successfully applying to jobs through social media does not differ statistically between socio-economic groups, but the prevalence of getting recruited to jobs through social media is greater within higher socio-economic groups. LinkedIn users are more …

Health endowment and later-life outcomes in the labour market : Evidence using genetic risk scores and reduced-form models

2019

This paper examines the relationship between health endowment and later-life outcomes in the labour market. The analysis is based on reduced-form models in which labour market outcomes are regressed on genetic variants related to the increased risk of cardiovascular diseases. We use linked Finnish data that have many strengths. Genetic risk scores constitute exogenous measures for health endowment, and accurate administrative tax records on earnings, employment and social income transfers provide a comprehensive account of an individual’s long-term performance in the labour market. The results show that although the direction of an effect is generally consistent with theoretical reasoning, …

Maahanmuuttajien kotoutumiskokemukset Etelä-Pohjanmaan maaseutumaisille alueille

2012

Artikkeli tarkastelee maaseutumaisella alueella asuvien maahanmuuttajien kotoutumista useiden eri tekijöiden kautta.

Schizophrenia polygenic risk score and long-term success in the labour market: A cohort study

2022

Publisher Copyright: © 2022 The Authors Employment is rare among people with a schizophrenia diagnosis. Meanwhile, a genetic liability for schizophrenia may hinder labour market performance. We studied how the polygenic risk score (PGS) for schizophrenia related to education and labour market outcomes. We found that a higher PGS was linked to lower educational levels and weaker labour market outcomes as well as a higher likelihood of receiving social income transfers, particularly among men. Assuming that the link is causal, our results indicate that individuals with schizophrenia or schizophrenia-related traits have a weakened ability to fully participate in the labour market, potentially …

Underemployment among mothers of children with intellectual disabilities

2018

Background Mothers with lifelong care responsibilities might involuntarily be non-employed or work part-time, both of which are defined as “underemployment.” This study aimed to investigate who these underemployed mothers are and what are the factors associated with such employment hardship when having a child with intellectual disability (ID). Method An interview survey was conducted in 2011 in two local authorities of Taiwan on 876 working-age mothers with a child with intellectual disability; 514 of them were working part-time/non-employed and chosen as participants of this study. Results The mothers with a younger child with intellectual disability, a higher level of education, a lower …

If you drink, don't smoke : Joint associations between risky health behaviors and labor market outcomes

2018

This paper examines the links between risky health behaviors and labor market success. We provide new evidence on the joint relationships between the most prominent forms of risky health behavior - alcohol consumption, smoking and physical inactivity - and long-term labor market outcomes. We use twin data for Finnish men and women linked to register-based individual information on earnings and labor market attachment. The twin data allow us to account for shared family and environmental factors and to measure risky health behaviors in 1975 and 1981. The long-term labor market outcomes were measured in adulthood as an average over the period 1990-2009. The sample sizes are 2156 and 2498 twin…

Legal Issues Affecting Labour Market Integration of Migrants in Finland

2021

AbstractFinland has only relatively recently become a country of immigration, and as a result most immigration and integration policy legislation is also relatively recent. Since the 1990s, the number of migrants to Finland has increased steadily, motivating the adoption of various policy measures to regulate migration and support integration. From the perspective of migrant labour market integration, the two most important legislative acts are the Aliens Act (FINLEX 301/2004) and the Act on the Promotion of Immigrant Integration (FINLEX 1386/2010), which lay out basic labour market integration supports for migrants, and determine who can work in Finland and on which grounds. Finland’s comp…
