On a theorem of Khan in a generalized metric space

2013

Existence and uniqueness of fixed points are established for a mapping satisfying a contractive condition involving a rational expression on a generalized metric space. Several particular cases and applications as well as some illustrative examples are given.

Fixed point theory for 1-set contractive and pseudocontractive mappings

2013

The purpose of this paper is to study the existence and uniqueness of fixed point for a class of nonlinear mappings defined on a real Banach space, which, among others, contains the class of separate contractive mappings, as well as to see that an important class of 1-set contractions and of pseudocontractions falls into this type of nonlinear mappings. As a particular case, we give an iterative method to approach the fixed point of a nonexpansive mapping. Later on, we establish some fixed point results of Krasnoselskii type for the sum of two nonlinear mappings where one of them is either a 1-set contraction or a pseudocontraction and the another one is completely continuous, which extend …

Periodicity and repetitions in parameterized strings

2008

AbstractOne of the most beautiful and useful notions in the Mathematical Theory of Strings is that of a Period, i.e., an initial piece of a given string that can generate that string by repeating itself at regular intervals. Periods have an elegant mathematical structure and a wealth of applications [F. Mignosi and A. Restivo, Periodicity, Algebraic Combinatorics on Words, in: M. Lothaire (Ed.), Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, pp. 237–274, 2002]. At the hearth of their theory, there are two Periodicity Lemmas: one due to Lyndon and Schutzenberger [The equation aM=bNcP in a free group, Michigan Math. J. 9 (1962) 289–298], referred to as the Weak Version, and the other due to Fine and …

Best Proximity Point Results in Non-Archimedean Fuzzy Metric Spaces

2013

We consider the problem of finding a best proximity point which achieves the minimum distance between two nonempty sets in a non-Archimedean fuzzy metric space. First we prove the existence and uniqueness of the best proximity point by using di fferent contractive conditions, then we present some examples to support our best proximity point theorems.

Fixed point theorems for non-self mappings in symmetric spaces under φ-weak contractive conditions and an application to functional equations in dyna…

2014

In this paper, we prove some common fixed point theorems for two pairs of non-self weakly compatible mappings enjoying common limit range property, besides satisfying a generalized phi-weak contractive condition in symmetric spaces. We furnish some illustrative examples to highlight the realized improvements in our results over the corresponding relevant results of the existing literature. We extend our main result to four finite families of mappings in symmetric spaces using the notion of pairwise commuting mappings. Finally, we utilize our results to discuss the existence and uniqueness of solutions of certain system of functional equations arising in dynamic programming.

Fixed-Point Theorems in Complete Gauge Spaces and Applications to Second-Order Nonlinear Initial-Value Problems

2013

We establish fixed-point results for mappings and cyclic mappings satisfying a generalized contractive condition in a complete gauge space. Our theorems generalize and extend some fixed-point results in the literature. We apply our obtained results to the study of existence and uniqueness of solution to a second-order nonlinear initial-value problem.

ISOMETRY GROUPS OF WEIGHTED SPACES OF HOLOMORPHIC FUNCTIONS: TRANSITIVITY AND UNIQUENESS

2009

We survey some recent results on the isometries of weighted spaces of holomorphic functions defined on an open subset of ℂn. We will see that these isometries are determined by a subgroup of the automorphisms on a distinguished subset of the domain. We will look for weights with 'large' groups of isometries and observe that in certain circumstances the group of isometries determines the weight.

Best proximity point theorems for rational proximal contractions

2013

Abstract We provide sufficient conditions which warrant the existence and uniqueness of the best proximity point for two new types of contractions in the setting of metric spaces. The presented results extend, generalize and improve some known results from best proximity point theory and fixed-point theory. We also give some examples to illustrate and validate our definitions and results. MSC:41A65, 46B20, 47H10.

Stochastic differential equations with coefficients in Sobolev spaces

2010

We consider It\^o SDE $\d X_t=\sum_{j=1}^m A_j(X_t) \d w_t^j + A_0(X_t) \d t$ on $\R^d$. The diffusion coefficients $A_1,..., A_m$ are supposed to be in the Sobolev space $W_\text{loc}^{1,p} (\R^d)$ with $p>d$, and to have linear growth; for the drift coefficient $A_0$, we consider two cases: (i) $A_0$ is continuous whose distributional divergence $\delta(A_0)$ w.r.t. the Gaussian measure $\gamma_d$ exists, (ii) $A_0$ has the Sobolev regularity $W_\text{loc}^{1,p'}$ for some $p'>1$. Assume $\int_{\R^d} \exp\big[\lambda_0\bigl(|\delta(A_0)| + \sum_{j=1}^m (|\delta(A_j)|^2 +|\nabla A_j|^2)\bigr)\big] \d\gamma_d0$, in the case (i), if the pathwise uniqueness of solutions holds, then the push-f…

Context Trees, Variable Length Markov Chains and Dynamical Sources

2012

Infinite random sequences of letters can be viewed as stochastic chains or as strings produced by a source, in the sense of information theory. The relationship between Variable Length Markov Chains (VLMC) and probabilistic dynamical sources is studied. We establish a probabilistic frame for context trees and VLMC and we prove that any VLMC is a dynamical source for which we explicitly build the mapping. On two examples, the "comb" and the "bamboo blossom", we find a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence and the uniqueness of a stationary probability measure for the VLMC. These two examples are detailed in order to provide the associated Dirichlet series as well as the genera…
