– Introduction

2020

How to envisage research on the ancient city? What are the most appropriate instruments to analyse it? What are the relationships between the emergence of the city as an independent community and the urbanization as archaeology can restore it? Without claiming to resolve these difficult questions, the contributions gathered here show that urbanization and the definitions of the ancient city used by contemporary historians and archaeologists are far from being precisely determined; they can even vary according to the authors, disciplines, periods and contexts. As a consequence, there is no town, but towns; no city, but cities. The issue of a definition is also the evaluation of theories, in …

Dimensions fractales et réalités périurbaines. L'exemple du Sud de Bruxelles

2004

This exploratory paper aims at showing how the fractal dimension can be used to characterise the spatial structure of built-up areas within the periurban fringe. The southern periphery of Brussels is considered here. Two estimation techniques (correlation and dilation) are applied to surface areas, and one (correlation after dilation) to the borders of built-up areas. They are applied to windows of fixed size. Fractal dimensions are then compared with traditional socio-economic and morphological indicators. The results are interpreted in the context of urban sprawl and polycentric development of the peripheries. These analyses confirm the usefulness of the fractal approach for describing bu…

L'agglomération ouverte d'Acy-Romance

1998

Disparities in nutritional adequacy of diets between different socioeconomic groups of Finnish adults

2022

Information on dietary adequacy is needed to assess food and nutrition security in a modern society, especially in the transition towards climate-friendly food systems. In this study, differences in the nutritional adequacy of diets among Finnish adults were evaluated in population groups of different education, income and urbanisation levels. The study used data from the FinDiet 2017 Survey (n = 1655, 18–74 years). Modelled usual intakes of foods and nutrients were evaluated relative to food-based dietary guidelines issued by the National Nutrition Council of Finland (FNNC) and with respect to nutrient adequacy following the Nordic Nutrition Recommendations and FNNC. For about half of the …

Modéliser la ville

2011

Urban sprawl arises from the growth of cities, especially of the biggest cities. This urban sprawl is accounted for mainly by residential clearing. It results also from the dynamics of centralization of employment and from specialization of activity zones i…

Multi-model ensemble simulations of olive pollen distribution in Europe in 2014: current status and outlook

2017

"Çalışmada 29 yazar bulunmaktadır. Bu yazarlardan sadece Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi mensuplarının girişleri yapılmıştır” The paper presents the first modelling experiment of the European-scale olive pollen dispersion, analyses the quality of the predictions, and outlines the research needs. A 6-model strong ensemble of Copernicus Atmospheric Monitoring Service (CAMS) was run throughout the olive season of 2014, computing the olive pollen distribution. The simulations have been compared with observations in eight countries, which are members of the European Aeroallergen Network (EAN). Analysis was performed for individual models, the ensemble mean and median, and for a dynamically optimised c…

Diurnal variability, photochemical production and loss processes of hydrogen peroxide in the boundary layer over Europe

2019

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) plays a significant role in the oxidizing capacity of the atmosphere. It is an efficient oxidant in the liquid phase and serves as a temporary reservoir for the hydroxyl radical (OH), the most important oxidizing agent in the gas phase. Due to its high solubility, removal of H2O2 due to wet and dry deposition is efficient, being a sink of HOx (OH+HO2) radicals. In the continental boundary layer, the H2O2 budget is controlled by photochemistry, transport and deposition processes. Here we use in situ observations of H2O2 and account for chemical source and removal mechanisms to study the interplay between these processes. The data were obtained during five ground-base…

MACC regional multi-model ensemble simulations of birch pollen dispersion in Europe

2015

Abstract. This paper presents the first ensemble modelling experiment in relation to birch pollen in Europe. The seven-model European ensemble of MACC-ENS, tested in trial simulations over the flowering season of 2010, was run through the flowering season of 2013. The simulations have been compared with observations in 11 countries, all members of the European Aeroallergen Network, for both individual models and the ensemble mean and median. It is shown that the models successfully reproduced the timing of the very late season of 2013, generally within a couple of days from the observed start of the season. The end of the season was generally predicted later than observed, by 5 days or more…
