BACKGROUND AND METHODS Prostate cancer frequently expresses an osteomimetic phenotype, but it is unclear how it is regulated and what biological and clinical implications it confers. Because mechanical forces physiologically regulate bone-remodeling activity in osteocytes, we hypothesized that mechanical action of fluid flow (MAFF) at the cancer microenvironment may similarly foster prostate cancer cell osteomimicry. Eight conventional and six atypical oncocytomas in a series of 147 renal neoplasms were studied. Histopathologic findings revealed exclusively oncocytic cells, but cellular polymorphism was higher in the atypical tumors. Atypical oncocytomas presented focal necrosis, transcapsular invasion, or both. Electron microscopy showed similar findings in all cases. Immunohistochemistry of atypical oncocytomas had higher expression against proliferating cell nuclear antigen and more discontinuous immunostaining against laminin than typical ones. Nocturia impairs quality of life (QoL). We have performed a non-interventional study in which men with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) were treated for at least 3 months with tamsulosin oral controlled absorption system (0.4 mg q.d.). Other than observing efficacy and tolerability of this drug formulation, the study was designed to explore the relative roles of number of nocturia episodes and of non-urological causes of nocturia on nocturia-related QoL at baseline and treatment-associated changes thereof. Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is a heritable but poorly understood complication of diabetes. To identify genetic variants predisposing to DKD, we performed genome-wide association analyses in 19,406 individuals with type 1 diabetes (T1D) using a spectrum of DKD definitions basedon albuminuria and renal function. Intercalated cells as a probable source for the development of renal oncocytoma

Renal oncocytoma is a distinct type of epithelial tumor said to arise from the collecting duct system. Here we show that in nine of ten oncocytomas the tumor cells expressed an analog of the erythrocyte anion exchanger band 3. In the normal kidney band 3 is confined to the basolateral surface of the majority of intercalated cells which comprise up to 50% of the cortical collecting duct epithelium. Carbonic anhydrase c is another protein abundant in intercalated cells, and this was also expressed in six of the ten oncocytomas investigated. Many of the reported oncocytomas have different chromosome abnormalities, indicating that they comprise a cytogenetically heterogenous group of tumors consisting of potentially cytogenetic subgroups. We have performed cytogenetic studies on nine renal oncocytomas. Clonal abnormalities were present in eight tumors. The findings most observed were the loss of the Y chromosome, and abnormalities of chromosomes 1 and 22. We also observed telomeric associations (tas) in two tumors and structural aberrations of chromosomes 9p and 19q, as well as monosomy 10. In 30 nephrectomy specimens, fine needle aspiration biopsies (FNAB) were performed both in the tumor and in the macroscopically normal part of the kidney: 18 were well differentiated renal cell carcinoma (RCC), 6 were moderately differentiated RCC, 4 were poorly differentiated RCC, and 2 were oncocytomas. FNAB was also performed in a bone metastasis of RCC. FNAB materials were stained using the immunoperoxidase method with RCC-specific monoclonal antibody and were compared with the staining of frozen sections. In all cases where tumor-antigen expression could be demonstrated in the frozen sections, a FNAB had already proven positive. There were only 2 false-negative cases where sufficient c…
