Carbon nanotube-protein carriers enhance size-dependent self-adjuvant antibody response to haptens

2013

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are nanomaterials with interesting emerging applications. Their properties make CNTs excellent candidates for use as new nanovehicles in drug delivery, immunization and diagnostics. In the current study, we assessed the immune-response-amplifying properties of CNTs to haptens by using azoxystrobin, the first developed strobilurin fungicide, asamodel analyte. Anazoxystrobin derivative bearingacarboxylated spacer arm (hapten AZc6) was covalently coupled to bovine serum albumin (BSA), and the resulting BSA-AZc6 conjugate was covalently linked to four functionalized CNTs of different shapes and sizes, varying in diameter and length. These four types of CNT-based construc…

Chemotherapy-induced antitumor immunity requires formyl peptide receptor 1.

2015

How dying tumor cells get noticed Besides killing tumor cells directly, some chemotherapies, such as anthracyclines, also activate the immune system to kill tumors. Vacchelli et al. discovered that in mice, anthracycline-induced antitumor immunity requires immune cells to express the protein formyl peptide receptor 1 (FPR1). Dendritic cells (DCs) near tumors expressed especially high amounts of FPR1. DCs normally capture fragments of dying tumor cells and use them to activate nearby T cells to kill tumors, but DCs lacking FPR1 failed to do this effectively. Individuals with breast or colon cancer expressing a variant of FPR1 and treated with anthracyclines showed poor metastasis-free and ov…

Zanhasaponins A and B, Antiphospholipase A2 Saponins from an Antiinflammatory Extract of Zanha africana Root Bark

1997

A MeOH extract from Z. africana was examined for topical antiinflammatory activity and proved to be active against arachidonic acid (AA) acute edema, 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol 13-acetate (TPA)-induced chronic inflammation, and oxazolone delayed-type hypersensitivity in mice. The extract also showed significant inhibitory activity of Naja naja phospholipase A2 when a polarographic method was used. Two oleanane-type triterpene saponins, zanhasaponins A (1) and B (2), and the cyclitol pinitol (4), isolated from the extract, were active as inhibitors of PLA2. A further saponin, zanhasaponin C (3) was inactive in this assay.

Cellular and humoral immune responses against cancer: implications for cancer vaccines.

1991

The key issue in tumor immunology is to identify antigens as target structures for a cancer-selective immunological attack in the tumor-bearing host, resulting in tumor rejection. There is a growing detailed understanding of structural and regulatory gene alterations giving rise to candidate rejection antigens and peptides in tumor cells. As well as reviewing the development of new adjuvant and recombinant vector systems, new approaches are suggested for the construction of cancer vaccines.

Bioactive saponins from plants: An update

2000

Plant saponins are a group of naturally occuring triterpene or steroid glycosides which include a large number of biologically and pharmacologically active compounds. Saponins have been shown in both in vitroand in vivoexperimental test systems during the last decade to possess a broad spectrum of biological and pharmacological activities. This review will summarize some of the recent advances concerning cancer-related activity, immunostimulating, immunoadjuvant, antihepatotoxic, antiphlogistic, antiallergic, molluscicidal, hemolytic, antifungal, antiviral, and hypoglycemic activities. In addition, the effects on the cardiovascular system and the central nervous system will be discussed tog…

Small round blue cell sarcoma of bone mimicking atypical Ewing's sarcoma with neuroectodermal features. An analysis of five cases with immunohistoche…

1987

Ewing's sarcoma (ES) of bone may occasionally display rosette-like textures mimicking Homer-Wright ones, as seen in neuroectodermic neoplasms (neuroblastoma, peripheral neuroepithelioma). Of a group of 39 cases of ES, reviewed with electron microscopic study, the authors have isolated five atypical ES, which histologically also possessed neuroectodermic traces. These tumors were composed of small round blue cells with rosette-like figures and cytoplasmic glycogen. The immunohistochemical analysis showed positivity for neuron-specific enolase (NSE) as well as for HNK-1 (leu-7) monoclonal antibody. Electron microscopic examination confirmed the tumor cell as being of small round type, with a …

ChemInform Abstract: Acetogenins from Annonaceae

2010

In 1982, Jolad et al. isolated uvaricin, a new antitumor agent, from the roots of Uvaria acuminata (Annonaceae), a bis-tetrahydrofuranoid fatty acid lactone (1) related to polyketides or acetogenins. However, it contained a number of original structural characteristics, particularly a linear acetogenin, a bis-tetrahydrofuran pattern flanked by hydroxyls and a terminal unsaturated lactone. Two years later, Dabrah and Sneden (2, 3 and Cortes et al. (4) described four new products presenting the same structural characteristics. Because these products formed a new class of natural compounds, and are only found in species belonging to the family of Annonaceae, they are commonly called acetogenin…

Julma ja kiehtova itä : muslimit englanninkielisissä maantieteen teoksissa 1700-luvun jälkimmäisellä puoliskolla

2010
