Background: The Bladder Cancer Index (BCI) is so far the only instrument applicable across all bladder cancer patients, independent of tumor infiltration or treatment applied. We developed a Spanish version of the BCI, and assessed its acceptability and metric properties. Methods: For the adaptation into Spanish we used the forward and back-translation method, expert panels, and cognitive debriefing patient interviews. For the assessment of metric properties we used data from 197 bladder cancer patients from a multi-center prospective study. Incisional hernias following median laparotomy have a high incidence and recurrence rate after repair, so that a better understanding of the linea alba biomechanics is desirable. The mechanical stress exerted on the linea alba in living humans is primarily generated by the musculature. In this human cadaver study, intraabdominal pressure was simulated by insertion of a balloon that was increasingly filled to maximal pressures of 200 mbar. The related forces acting transversely on the linea alba at maximum pressure were found to be between 41.6 and 52.2 N/cm (mean = 45.9 N/cm), which is in agreement with a recent modeling of the related forces.

Resumen La finalidad de este estudio es validar una escala para el análisis de las percepciones de los residentes sobre el impacto social de un centro deportivo. Se recogió una muestra de 406 residentes del municipio de Moncada (Valencia), con un error de muestreo de ±4,82, que contestaron a una encuesta de 31 ítems que recogían posibles impactos sociales derivados de la presencia del centro deportivo en la localidad. Single tube optimisation of APOE genotyping based on melting curve analysis

Objectives: To develop and validate a single-tube protocol for APOE genotyping using fluorescent probes. Design and methods: We have designed and validated a hybrid, single-tube, SimpleProbe/FRET probe protocol that takes advantage of the different probe wavelength emissions. Results: Our method offers high quality outcomes, minimum interferences between probe signals and is 100% concordant with the reference protocol. Conclusions: This method is cheaper, faster and more reliable and versatile than other alternatives proposed. © 2008 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
