Estimation of the mechanical properties of the eye through the study of its vibrational modes.

2017

Measuring the eye's mechanical properties in vivo and with minimally invasive techniques can be the key for individualized solutions to a number of eye pathologies. The development of such techniques largely relies on a computational modelling of the eyeball and, it optimally requires the synergic interplay between experimentation and numerical simulation. In Astrophysics and Geophysics the remote measurement of structural properties of the systems of their realm is performed on the basis of (helio-)seismic techniques. As a biomechanical system, the eyeball possesses normal vibrational modes encompassing rich information about its structure and mechanical properties. However, the integral a…

Moments of Goodness: An Analysis of Ethical and Educational Dimensions of the Terror Attack on Utøya, Norway (July 22, 2011)

2014

Published version of an article in the journal: Studies in Philosophy and Education. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s11217-014-9452-1 The analysis is based on some moral experiences taking place during a terrorist attack on the Norwegian Labor Party’s youth camp on the island of Utøya (outside of Oslo) July 22, 2011, where 69 young people were killed and several seriously injured. After the attack many of the survivors told stories of how strangers spontaneous had helped and cared for each other. In the midst of the horror there occurred sudden “moments of goodness” or “points of light” that revealed hope for the persons involved, as well as for the society.…

Values created by circular solutions in the buildings sector for companies and municipalities as key actors

2016

Culture and Politics of Laziness. From Fairy Tales to Oblomov and Bartleby

2021

Why do we reject the wisdom from the past? Reflections on the practical dimension of values in historical education

2020

Values as a hobby: the transformation and survival of cultural ritual values in the process of desecration

2023

The paper examines how values lose their sacred or protected significance and turn into values as a hobby. Using an excerpt from Arundhati Roy's novel “The God of Small Things”, a trend of transformation of values is outlined, which raises questions about the importance of different values, both sacred and secular, for the representatives of these values. In short, the question is one of the value of values: is their practice (affirmation) meaningful in the basic sense of these values, or is this practice mere imitation as a hobby? The article gives several examples that show the versatility of this topic. The case of Qutb’s Islamism highlights the importance of the distinction between priv…

Can corporate social responsibility (CSR) be recruited? : an insight to future employees' values and perceptions on attractive employers

2013

Many businesses acknowledge that they want to achieve the best possible employees in order to succeed in the markets in the near future. This study takes a stance on who these employees, the future talents, are and what do they value, especially from the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) point of view. Thus future employees’ values and their aspirations towards attractive employers are observed in this qualitative, theme-interview based study conducted to Master’s level students of University of Jyväskylä, School of Business and Economics. The results show that there are five (5) different classes of future employees, which are Environmental Idealists, Equality Enhancers, Corporate Mone…

Participants' outcome expectations and changes in well-being and ill-being in mindfulness based intervention for burnout

2015

2020

In recent times, coaching has become relevant in heterogeneous discourses and practices in the economic, political and cultural fields of contemporary societies. Based on our ethnographic analysis of different training sessions on the Nike+ Run Club platform in Buenos Aires, in this article we study how ontological coaching operates in the field of sport and races. Then, we ask about how people who attend this platform appropriate coaching techniques to manage emotions, moods, and body effects according to the business entrepreneurship logic. Through this work, the ethnographic results are articulated with a reflection about the theory, practice, and values of the ontological coaching, wher…

Dangerous relationships : biases in freshwater bioassessment based on observed to expected ratios

2018

Copyright by the Ecological Society of America The ecological assessment of freshwaters is currently primarily based on biological communities and the reference condition approach (RCA). In the RCA, the communities in streams and lakes disturbed by humans are compared with communities in reference conditions with no or minimal anthropogenic influence. The currently favored rationale is using selected community metrics for which the expected values (E) for each site are typically estimated from environmental variables using a predictive model based on the reference data. The proportional differences between the observed values (O) and E are then derived, and the decision rules for status ass…
