Phase Fourier vector model for scale invariant three-dimensional image detection.

2009

A scale invariant 3D object detection method based on phase Fourier transform (PhFT) is addressed. Three-dimensionality is expressed in terms of range images. The PhFT of a range image gives information about the orientations of the surfaces in the 3D object. When the object is scaled, the PhFT becomes a distribution multiplied by a constant factor which is related to the scale factor. Then 3D scale invariant detection can be solved as illumination invariant detection process. Several correlation operations based on vector space representation are applied. Results show the tolerance of detection method to scale besides discrimination against false objects.

Applying Wavelet Packet Decomposition and One-Class Support Vector Machine on Vehicle Acceleration Traces for Road Anomaly Detection

2013

Road condition monitoring through real-time intelligent systems has become more and more significant due to heavy road transportation. Road conditions can be roughly divided into normal and anomaly segments. The number of former should be much larger than the latter for a useable road. Based on the nature of road condition monitoring, anomaly detection is applied, especially for pothole detection in this study, using accelerometer data of a riding car. Accelerometer data were first labeled and segmented, after which features were extracted by wavelet packet decomposition. A classification model was built using one-class support vector machine. For the classifier, the data of some normal seg…

A kernel support vector machine based technique for Crohn’s disease classification in human patients

2017

In this paper a new technique for classification of patients affected by Crohn’s disease (CD) is proposed. The proposed technique is based on a Kernel Support Vector Machine (KSVM) and it adopts a Stratified K-Fold Cross-Validation strategy to enhance the KSVM classifier reliability. Traditional manual classification methods require radiological expertise and they usually are very time-consuming. Accordingly to three expert radiologists, a dataset composed of 300 patients has been selected for KSVM training and validation. Each patient was codified by 22 extracted qualitative features and classified as Positive or Negative as the related histological specimen result showed the CD. The eff…

Biologically Inspired Vision Architectures: a Software/Hardware Perspective

2007

Even tough the field of computer vision has seen huge improvement in the last few decades, computer vision systems still lack, in most cases, the efficiency of biological vision systems. In fact biological vision systems routinely accomplish complex visual tasks such as object recognition, obstacle avoidance, and target tracking, which continue to challenge artificial systems. The study of biological vision system remains a strong cue for the design of devices exhibiting intelligent behaviour in visually sensed environments but current artificial systems are vastly different from biological ones for various reasons. First of all, biologically inspired vision architectures, which are continu…

Intelligent system for material quality control using impact-echo testing

2008

This paper introduces an intelligent system to discern the quality of materials inspected by the impact-echo technique. The system includes a hardware setup to inspect parallelepiped-shape materials and a procedure to classify the material depending on its quality condition. Four levels of classification with different grades of knowledge about the material defects are approached: material condition, kind of defect, defect orientation, and defect dimension. The number of classes (material qualities) in the lowest classification level is 12. The procedure is applied on signals coming from 3D finite element simulations and lab experiments with aluminium specimens. The classification procedure…

SVG rendering for internet imaging

2006

The SVG (scalable vector graphics) standard allows representing complex graphical scenes by a collection of graphic vectorial-based primitives, offering several advantages with respect to classical raster images such as: scalability, resolution independence, etc. In this paper we present a full comparison between some advanced raster to SVG algorithms: SWaterG, SVGenie, SVGWave and some commercial tools. SWaterG works by a watershed decomposition coupled with some ad-hoc heuristics, SVGenie and SVGWave use a polygonalization based respectively on data dependent and wavelet triangulation. The results obtained by SWaterG, SVGenie and SVGWave are satisfactory both in terms of perceptual measur…

Dimension Estimation in Two-Dimensional PCA

2021

We propose an automated way of determining the optimal number of low-rank components in dimension reduction of image data. The method is based on the combination of two-dimensional principal component analysis and an augmentation estimator proposed recently in the literature. Intuitively, the main idea is to combine a scree plot with information extracted from the eigenvectors of a variation matrix. Simulation studies show that the method provides accurate estimates and a demonstration with a finger data set showcases its performance in practice. peerReviewed

Vectors of Pairwise Item Preferences

2019

Neural embedding has been widely applied as an effective category of vectorization methods in real-world recommender systems. However, its exploration of users’ explicit feedback on items, to create good quality user and item vectors is still limited. Existing neural embedding methods only consider the items that are accessed by the users, but neglect the scenario when a user gives high or low rating to a particular item. In this paper, we propose Pref2Vec, a method to generate vector representations of pairwise item preferences, users and items, which can be directly utilized for machine learning tasks. Specifically, Pref2Vec considers users’ pairwise item preferences as elementary units. …

State Space-Vector Model of Linear Induction Motors including End-Effects and Iron Losses Part I: Theoretical Analysis

2020

This is the first part of the article, divided into two parts, dealing with the definition of a space-vector dynamic model of the linear induction motor (LIM) taking into consideration both the dynamic end-effects and the iron losses and its offline identification. This first part specifically treats the theoretical formulation of this model, which has been expressed in a state form, so to be, in perspective, suitably adopted for developing novel nonlinear control techniques, nonlinear observers as well as electrical losses minimization techniques. Besides the formulation of the dynamic model in space-vector state form, a steady-state analysis is proposed, highlighting the combined effects …

Magnetic anisotropy in Fe/U and Ni/U bilayers

2021

Magnetometry measurements of Fe/U and Ni/U bilayer systems reveal a non-monotonic dependence of the magnetic anisotropy for U thicknesses in the range 0 nm - 8 nm, with the Fe/U bilayers showing a more prominent effect as compared to Ni/U. The stronger response for Fe/U is ascribed to the stronger 3d-5f hybridization of Fe and U. This non-monotonic behaviour is thought to arise from quantum well states in the uranium overlayers. Estimating an oscillation period from the non-monotonic data, and comparing it to Density Functional Theory calculations, we find that wavevector matches to the experimental data can be made to regions of high spectral density in (010) and (100) cuts of the electron…
