Ventricular remodelling in rabbits with sustained high-fat diet.
2013
Aim Excess weight gain and obesity are one of the most serious health problems in the western societies. These conditions enhance risk of cardiac disease and have been linked with increased prevalence for cardiac arrhythmias and sudden death. Our goal was to study the ventricular remodelling occurring in rabbits fed with high-fat diet (HFD) and its potential arrhythmogenic mechanisms. Methods We used 15 NZW rabbits that were randomly assigned to a control (n = 7) or HFD group (n = 8) for 18 weeks. In vivo studies included blood glucose, electrocardiographic, and echocardiographic measurements. Optical mapping was performed in Langendorff-perfused isolated hearts. Results Body weight (3.69 ±…
Comparison of Standard Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Versus the Combination of Active Compression-Decompression Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and an …
2003
Background— Active compression-decompression (ACD) CPR combined with an inspiratory impedance threshold device (ITD) improves vital organ blood flow during cardiac arrest. This study compared survival rates with ACD+ITD CPR versus standard manual CPR (S-CPR). Methods and Results— A prospective, controlled trial was performed in Mainz, Germany, in which a 2-tiered emergency response included early defibrillation. Patients with out-of-hospital arrest of presumed cardiac pathogenesis were sequentially randomized to ACD+ITD CPR or S-CPR by the advanced life support team after intubation. Rescuers learned which method of CPR to use at the start of each work shift. The primary end point was 1-ho…
Efecto del estiramiento miocárdico sobre las frecuencias de activación determinadas mediante análisis espectral durante la fibrilación ventricular
2002
Introduction and objectives. The aim of this study was to analyze the effects of myocardial stretching on excitation frequencies, as determined by spectral analysis, during ventricular fibrillation. Methods. In 12 isolated rabbit heart preparations, ventricular activation during ventricular fibrillation was recorded with multiple electrodes. Recordings were obtained before, during and after ventricular dilatation produced with an intraventricular balloon. The dominant frequency of the signals obtained with each of the electrodes was determined by spectral analysis. Results. During the control phase, the mean, minimum and maximum dominant frequencies were, respectively, 14.3 ± 1.7, 12.5 ± 1.…
Fractionation of memory in medial temporal lobe amnesia
2006
We report a comprehensive investigation of the anterograde memory functions of two patients with memory impairments (RH and JC). RH had neuroradiological evidence of apparently selective right-sided hippocampal damage and an intact cognitive profile apart from selective memory impairments. JC, had neuroradiological evidence of bilateral hippocampal damage following anoxia due to cardiac arrest. He had anomic and "executive" difficulties in addition to a global amnesia, suggesting atrophy extending beyond hippocampal regions. Their performance is compared with that of a previously reported hippocampal amnesic patient who showed preserved recollection and familiarity for faces in the context …
Effect of Streptomycin on Stretch-Induced Change in Myocardial Activation During Ventricular Fibrillation
2008
The aim of this study was to determine whether the changes in myocardial activation pattern resulting from acute stretching during ventricular fibrillation can be counteracted by administering a compound that blocks receptors sensitive to stretch. The study involved 16 isolated rabbit hearts, in which refractoriness and activation frequency during ventricular fibrillation were measured before, during and after localized acute stretching of the left ventricular free wall, either without (series A, n=8) or with (series B, n=8) the presence of streptomycin, 200 micromol. At baseline and during and after stretching, ventricular fibrillation was slower with streptomycin perfusion in series B tha…
Experimental Study of the Effects of EIPA, Losartan, and BQ-123 on Electrophysiological Changes Induced by Myocardial Stretch
2015
Ventricular Fibrillation detection using time-frequency and the KNN classifier without parameter extraction
2017
Vulnerability of the right ventricle to cathodal, anodal, and bipolar stimulation at double diastolic threshold strength
1984
The repetitive ventricular response (RVR) to three stimulation techniques (bipolar, cathodal and anodal) was investigated in 35 patients. 26 patients suffered from coronary heart disease and 9 patients from dilative cardiomyopathy. The stimulation study was performed at a ventricular driving rate of 120/min with one and two premature ventricular extrastimuli. We used rectangular impulses of 1.8 ms duration at duable diastolic threshold strength. RVR was scored as follows: 0: no RVR, 1: one nonstimulated RVR, 2: two nonstimulated RVR, 3: three nonstimulated RVR, 4: four to ten nonstimulated RVR, 5: more than ten nonstimulated RVR lasting less than 2 minutes, 6: sustained ventricular tachycar…
Detection of Ventricular Fibrillation Using the Image from Time-Frequency Representation and Combined Classifiers without Feature Extraction
2018
Due the fact that the required therapy to treat Ventricular Fibrillation (V F) is aggressive (electric shock), the lack of a proper detection and recovering therapy could cause serious injuries to the patient or trigger a ventricular fibrillation, or even death. This work describes the development of an automatic diagnostic system for the detection of the occurrence of V F in real time by means of the time-frequency representation (T F R) image of the ECG. The main novelties are the use of the T F R image as input for a classification process, as well as the use of combined classifiers. The feature extraction stage is eliminated and, together with the use of specialized binary classifiers, …
[Is ICD-programming for double intraoperative defibrillation threshold energy safe and effective during long-time follow-up? Results of a prospective…
1999
The aim of this prospective and randomized study was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of a reduced shock strength in transvenous implantable defibrillator therapy. So far clinical data concerning the safety margin of the shock energy in ICD therapy do not exist. The shock energy tested during long-term follow-up in this study was twice the intraoperatively measured defibrillation threshold (DFT). A total number of 176 consecutive patients representing a typical cohort of ICD patients were evaluated. All patients received a non-thoracotomy lead system (CPI, Endotak 0070, 0090) and a biphasic cardioverter-defibrillator with the ability to store episodes (Cardiac Pacemakers Inc., Ventac TM …
