Bene : Adverb or noun?

International audience; When Italian bene ‘good / well’ occurs with fare ‘do / make’, several constructs with remarkably different argument frames are involved. This paper deals with three of them: (a) Il latte fa bene ai bambini ‘Milk is good for children’; (b) Fa bene il suo lavoro ‘She does her job well’, and (c) Faresti bene a non dire niente ‘You would do well to say nothing about it’. We discuss dictionary discrepancies concerning the lexical category of 'bene' in (a), which we take to be a noun predicate, and draw a distinction between the adverbial uses in (b) and (c).

[EN] This study discusses how seven of Levin’s (1993) entity-specific change-of-state verbs (i.e. bloom, blossom, flower, germinate, sprout, swell, and blister) are subsumed into the intransitive resultative construction by highlighting and making use of the external and internal constraints proposed by the Lexical Constructional Model (LCM; Ruiz de Mendoza and Mairal 2007). External constraints refer to cognitive mechanisms such as high-level metaphor and/or metonymy whereas internal constraints are concerned with the encyclopedic and event structure makeup of verbs. Aquest treball ofereix una descripció de conjunt dels fenòmens de versificació que presenten tres textos de Ramon Llull: Pecat d’Adam, l’opuscle D’oració (cinquena part de la Medicina de pecat) i l’Aplicació de l’Art general. La tria respon a un doble criteri: tots tres textos són escrits en el mateix esquema de versificació (noves rimades) i de tots tres se’n conserven còpies manuscrites fetes per un mateix copista, Guillem Pagès. The evolution of Catalan inchoative verbs from the 13th century to the 16th century

En aquest treball, analitzem la subclasse de verbs incoatius del català, pertanyent a la tercera conjugació, aplicant el concepte d’exaptació (Lass 1990), que serveix per a explicar canvis que consisteixen en la reutilització de material morfològic no funcional: en els verbs incoatius, el procés d’exaptació consisteix en el reciclatge d’un afix lèxic com a increment del radical quan perd el valor semàntic inicial de ‘canvi d’estat’ i queda relegat a certs verbs de la tercera conjugació. Aquesta reutilització funcional comporta l’aparició d’una subclasse de verbs dins de la tercera conjugació que, a causa de la seua estabilitat, ha esdevingut el model flexiu majoritari d’aquesta conjugació. …

Lexical classes and constructions: an analysis of the constructional realization of entity-specific change-of-state English verbs

This study analyzes a so far neglected part of the constructional behavior of Levin's (1993) entity-specific change-of-state verbs. More specifically, we discuss the integration of verbs from this lexical class into the intransitive-resultative construction. We base our analysis on the Lexical Constructional Model or LCM (Ruiz de Mendoza and Mairal 2008, 2011; Mairal and Ruiz de Mendoza 2009; Ruiz de Mendoza 2013). It will be shown that the internal and external constraints postulated by the LCM constitute useful explanatory and analytical tools for the fusion processes between these verbs and the intransitive-resultative construction.
