Taxonomic study of sucrose-positive Aeromonas jandaei-like isolates from faeces, water and eels: emendation of A. jandaei Carnahan et al. 1992

2003

Fourteen sucrose-positive Aeromonas jandaei-like isolates from fresh water and reared European eels were subjected to a polyphasic study to determine their taxonomic position. Numerical taxonomy was used to analyse phenotypic data obtained for these isolates and 43 type and reference strains representative of recognized Aeromonas species. The A. jandaei cluster (phenon 1) was defined at 81.6 % similarity (S(J)); this included the A. jandaei-like isolates, the sucrose-positive strain Aeromonas veronii biogroup sobria CECT 4910 and nearly all A. jandaei reference strains used in the study. Four other reference strains of A. veronii biogroup sobria and the type strain of Aeromonas ichthiosmia …

Identification of a clone of Escherichia coli O103:H2 as a potential agent of hemolytic-uremic syndrome in France

1993

In a French multicenter study, six verocytotoxin-producing Escherichia coli strains were isolated from the stools of 6 of 69 children suffering from hemolytic-uremic syndrome. All strains belonged to serotype O103:H2, a serotype commonly associated with diarrhea in weaned rabbits in France. To determine whether the strains from humans and rabbits were genetically related, they were compared by analyzing their esterase electropherotypes and the restriction fragment length polymorphisms of the ribosomal DNA regions. A common clonal origin of these pathogenic strains was suggested by their identical esterase electropherotypes and their identical ribotypes, in addition to their identical seroty…

Diclofenac sodium and cyclosporin A inhibit human lens epithelial cell proliferation in culture.

1997

• Purpose: To investigate the effect of diclofenac sodium salt and cyclosporin A (CsA) on human lens epithelial cell (HLEC) growth in culture. • Methods: Cultures of HLEC were obtained from anterior capsules from extracapsular cataract surgery. Third-passage cells were seeded in 96-well plates in 0.1 ml culture medium. Cytotoxicity was estimated by the tetrazolium test in confluent monolayers after 24 h exposure to a wide range of concentrations of diclofenac and CsA. The effect of subcytotoxic concentrations of diclofenac and CsA on HLEC proliferation in subconfluent cultures was evaluated after 24 and 72 h of exposure. To investigate the relationship between PGEZ synthesis and the inhibit…

Ernesto Basile e il ritratto. Percorsi tematici ed espositivi.

2012

Phylogenetic reconstruction of the yeast genus Kluyveromyces: restriction map analysis of the 5.8S rRNA gene and the two ribosomal internal transcrib…

1998

Summary We have constructed restriction site maps of the 5.8S rRNA gene and the two ITS regions in 60 strains of Kluyveromyces genus. We test the value of this region as a phylogenetic indicator, and its possible use as a fast and easy method to identify species of this genus. Despite some minor incongruences, our results are in good agreement with previous phylogenetic reconstructions based on the 18S rRNA gene sequencing (Cai et al., 1996; James et al., 1997). A highly significant monophyletic group was formed by K. lactis, K. marxianus, K. aestuarii, K. dobzhanskii and K. wickerhamii, which should be considered the true Kluyveromyces genus. The other species of the genus were grouped wit…

Characterization of the cleavage site and function of resulting cleavage fragments after limited proteolysis of Clostridium difficile toxin B (TcdB) …

2005

Clostridium difficiletoxin B (TcdB) is a single-stranded protein consisting of a C-terminal domain responsible for binding to the host cell membrane, a middle part involved in internalization, and the N-terminal catalytic (toxic) part. This study shows that TcdB is processed by a single proteolytic step which cleaves TcdB10463between Leu543and Gly544and the naturally occurring variant TcdB8864between Leu544and Gly545. The cleavage occurs at neutral pH and is catalysed by a pepstatin-sensitive protease localized in the cytoplasm and on the cytoplasmic face of intracellular membranes. The smaller N-terminal cleavage products [63 121 Da (TcdB10463) and 62 761 Da (TcdB8864)] harbour the cytotox…
