Banner clouds observed at Mount Zugspitze

Abstract. Systematic observations of banner clouds at Mount Zugspitze in the Bavarian Alps are presented and discussed. One set of observations draws on daily time lapse movies, which were taken over several years at this mountain. Identifying banner clouds with the help of these movies and using simultaneous observations of standard variables at the summit of the mountain provides climatological information regarding the banner clouds. In addition, a week-long measurement campaign with an entire suite of instruments was carried through yielding a comprehensive set of data for two specific banner cloud events. Comparison of AERONET and SKYRAD4.2 inversion products retrieved from a Cimel CE318 sunphotometer

SKYNET is an international research network of ground based sky – sunphotometers for the observation and monitoring of columnar aerosol properties. The algorithm developed by SKYNET is called SKYRAD.pack, and it is used on Prede instruments only. In this study, we have modified the SKYRAD.pack software in order to adapt it to Cimel sunphotometers. A one month database of Cimel data obtained at Burjassot (Valencia, Spain) has been processed with this program and the obtained inversion products have been compared with AERONET retrievals. Evidence of positive tectonic inversion in the north-central sector of the Sicily Channel (Central Mediterranean)

In order to unravel the tectonic evolution of the north-central sector of the Sicily Channel (Central Mediterranean), a seismo-stratigraphic analysis of single- and multi-channel seismic reflection profiles has been carried out. This allowed to identify, between 20 and 50 km offshore the central-southern coast of Sicily, a ~80-km-long deformation belt, characterized by a set of WNW–ESE to NW–SE fault segments showing a poly-phasic activity. Effects of Urbanization on the Temperature Inversion Breakup in a Mountain Valley with Implications for Air Quality

AbstractMany cities located in valleys with limited ventilation experience serious air pollution problems. The ventilation of an urban valley can be limited not only by orographic barriers, but also by urban heat island–induced circulations and/or the capping effect of temperature inversions. Furthermore, land-use/-cover changes caused by urbanization alter the dynamics of temperature inversions and urban heat islands, thereby affecting air quality in an urban valley. Optimizing LUT-based radiative transfer model inversion for retrieval of biophysical parameters using hyperspectral data

Inversion of radiative transfer models using a lookup-table (LUT) approach against hyperspectral data streams leads to retrievals of biophysical parameters such as chlorophyll content (Chl), but necessary optimization strategies are not consolidated yet. Being popular in online social networks: How agentic, communal, and creativity traits relate to judgments of status and liking

We investigated how personality affects both peer-perceived popularity (status) and sociometric popularity (liking) in online social networks (OSNs). Self-ratings of agentic (e.g., extraversion), communal (e.g., agreeableness), and creativity traits (e.g., openness) were collected from 103 OSN profile owners (targets). Unacquainted perceivers provided status and liking judgments based on either targets’ full OSN profiles or profile pictures. Integral conversion electron Mossbauer spectroscopy (ICEMS), x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) have been used to carry out a comparative study of the corrosion resistance against humid SO2-aggressive environments of ultrathin 57Fe films. These films, having a thickness ≤ 2.5 nm, have been prepared by evaporation of 57Fe under vacuum and by 57Fe coating by a Langmuir–Blodgett (LB) technique on SiO2/Si wafers. The results have shown that the corrosion resistance of the evaporated films is similar to that of massive Fe. However, the LB films show a remarkably higher corrosion resistance. A CEMS/AES study of the passivation of iron

The passivation of iron and steel (DIN 1623) was studied by integral and depth selective conversion electron Mossbauer spectroscopy and Auger electron spectroscopy. Thickness and phase composition of the passive layer formed in sulphate solution and in a phosphate buffer were determined in dependence on the anodic potential and the duration of the passivating procedure. The experimental results lead to the conclusion that not the whole oxidic layer is responsible for the passivity but only a very thin intermediate layer formed between the cubic substrate and the rhombic oxide (γ-FeOOH) cover.
