Conceptual study of a heavy-ion-ERDA spectrometer for energies below 6 MeV

Abstract Elastic recoil detection analysis (ERDA) is a well established technique and it offers unique capabilities in thin film analysis. Simultaneous detection and depth profiling of all elements, including hydrogen, is possible only with time-of-flight ERDA. Bragg ionization chambers or Δ E - E detectors can also be used to identify the recoiling element if sufficiently high energies are used. The chief limitations of time-of-flight ERDA are the beam induced sample damage and the requirement of a relatively large accelerator. Abiotic and biotic controls on methane formation down to 2.5 km depth within the Precambrian Fennoscandian Shield

Abstract Despite a geological history characterised by high temperature and pressure processes and organic carbon deprived crystalline bedrock, large amounts of hydrocarbons are found in deep groundwaters within Precambrian continental shields. In many sites, methane comprises more that 80% of the dissolved gas phase reaching concentrations of tens of mmol l −1 . In this study, we used isotopic methods to study the carbon isotope systematics and sources of crustal methane within the Fennoscandian Shield. Seasonal changes in predator community switch the direction of selection for prey defences

Insect communities consist of aposematic species with efficient warning colours against predation, as well as abundant examples of crypsis. To understand such coexistence, we here report results from a field experiment where relative survival of artificial larvae, varying in conspicuousness, was estimated in natural bird communities over an entire season. This takes advantage of natural variation in the proportion of naive predators: naivety peaks when young birds have just fledged. We show that the relative benefit of warning signals and crypsis changes accordingly. Halogen and Hydrogen Bonded Complexes of 5-Iodouracil

Three derivatives of 5-iodouracil were prepared, and their complexation properties, supplemented by 5-iodouracil under the same conditions, were studied with and without halogen bond acceptors in N,N-dimethylformamide, N,N-diethylformamide, N-methylformamide, formamide, dimethylsulfoxide, and water. Dimers of the Higher-Energy Conformer of Formic Acid: Experimental Observation

We report on the first experimental observation of formic acid dimers composed of two molecules of the higher-energy cis conformer. The cis–cis formic acid dimers are prepared in an argon matrix by selective vibrational excitation of the ground state trans conformer (deuterated form HCOOD) combined with thermal annealing of the matrix at about 30 K. Five cis–cis formic acid dimers are predicted by ab initio calculations (interaction energies from −16.9 to −27.2 kJ molˉ¹), and these structures are used for the assignment of the experimental spectra. Systematic Construction of Ternary Cocrystals by Orthogonal and Robust Hydrogen and Halogen Bonds

A carefully designed strategy is presented for the construction of ternary cocrystals, based on the orthogonality of two supramolecular interaction modes: hydrogen bonding between crown ethers and thioureas and the halogen bonding between thioureas and perfluorohalocarbons. Tested on a set comprising two crown ethers, two thioureas and five halogen bond donors, the strategy resulted in a high, 75% success rate, with 15/20 component combinations yielding at least one cocrystal. Crystal structure analysis revealed the interplay between the hydrogen and halogen bonding motifs, also shedding light on the variables affecting their formation. peerReviewed

Template-Free Supracolloidal Self-Assembly of Atomically Precise Gold Nanoclusters : From 2D Colloidal Crystals to Spherical Capsids

We report supracolloidal self-assembly of atomically precise and strictly monodisperse gold nanoclusters involving p-mercaptobenzoic acid ligands (Au102-pMBA44) under aqueous conditions into hexagonally packed monolayer-thick two-dimensional facetted colloidal crystals (thickness 2.7 nm) and their bending to closed shells leading to spherical capsids (d ca. 200 nm), as controlled by solvent conditions.
