Drosera rotundifolia L. is a carnivorous plant used in traditional medicine for its therapeutic properties. Because of its small size, its collection in nature is laborious and different cultivation methods have been studied to ensure availability. Aims To help cells to better resist the stressful conditions associated with the freeze-drying process during starter production, we investigated the effect of various osmotic conditions on growth, survival and acidification activity of Lactobacillus buchneri R1102, after freeze-drying and during storage for 3 months at 25°C. Methods and Results High survival rates during freeze-drying, but not during storage, were obtained when 0·1 mol l−1 KCl was added at the beginning of fermentation, without any change in membrane properties and betaine accumulation. In-situ forming gel-like depot of a polyaspartamide-polylactide copolymer for once a week administration of Sulpiride

Abstract Objectives An in-situ forming gel-like depot, prepared by using an appropriate polyaspartamide-polylactide graft copolymer, has been employed to release in a sustained way sulpiride. Methods α,β-poly(N-2-hydroxyethyl)-D,L-aspartamide-g-polylactic acid (PHEA-g-PLA) has been used as a polymer component. Its physicochemical properties make possible to dissolve it in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, with the obtainment of a solution able to form a gel-like depot once injected into a physiological medium. In our controlled in vitro study, we investigated the biological impact of Actovegin and Traumeel alone and in combination on primary human skeletal muscle cells. Cells were characterized by immunofluorescence staining for myogenic factor 5 (Myf5) and MyoD, and cultured with or without Actovegin and / or Traumeel. Recent developments in the use of viability dyes and quantitative PCR in the food microbiology field.

The increase in foodborne outbreaks highlights the need for rapid, sensitive and specific methods for food safety monitoring, enabling specific detection and quantification of viable foodborne pathogens. Real-time PCR (qPCR) combined with the use of viability dyes, recently introduced, fulfils all these requirements. The strategy relies on the use of DNA-binding molecules such as propidium monoazide (PMA) or ethidium monoazide (EMA) as sample pretreatment previous to the qPCR.
