μ-e conversion in nuclei versus μ→e γ: an effective field theory point of view

1998

Using an effective lagrangian description we analyze possible new physics contributions to the most relevant muon number violating processes: $\mu \to e \gamma$ and $\mu$--$e$ conversion in nuclei. We identify a general class of models in which those processes are generated at one loop level and in which $\mu$--$e$ conversion is enhanced with respect to $\mu \to e \gamma$ by a large $\ln(m^2_\mu/\Lambda^2),$ where $\Lambda$ is the scale responsible for the new physics. For this wide class of models bounds on $\mu$--$e$ conversion constrain the scale of new physics more stringently than $\mu \to e \gamma$ already at present and, with the expected improvements in $\mu$--$e$ conversion experim…

Kinetics of carotenoids degradation and furosine formation in dried apricots (Prunus armeniaca L.)

2017

Abstract The kinetics of carotenoid and color degradation, as well as furosine formation, were investigated in apricot fruits during convective heating at 50, 60 and 70 °C. Degradation of carotenoids and color, expressed as total color difference (TCD), followed a first and zero order kinetic, respectively. The activation energy (Ea) for carotenoids degradation ranged from 73.7 kJ/mol for 13- cis -β-carotene to 120.7 kJ/mol for lutein, being about 91 kJ/mol for all- trans -β-carotene. Violaxanthin and anteraxanthin were the most susceptible to thermal treatment. The furosine evolution was fitted at zero order kinetic model. The Ea for furosine formation was found to be 83.3 kJ/mol and the Q…

The influence of phase transitions in phosphatidylethanolamine models on the activity of violaxanthin de-epoxidase

2008

In the present study, the influence of the phospholipid phase state on the activity of the xanthophyll cycle enzyme violaxanthin de-epoxidase (VDE) was analyzed using different phosphatidylethanolamine species as model lipids. By using (31)P NMR spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and temperature dependent enzyme assays, VDE activity could directly be related to the lipid structures the protein is associated with. Our results show that the gel (L beta) to liquid-crystalline (L alpha) phase transition in these single lipid component systems strongly enhances both the solubilization of the xanthophyll cycle pigment violaxanthin in the membrane and the activity of the VDE. This pha…

Odorization of a novel object can influence infant's exploratory behavior in unexpected ways.

2008

International audience; Although much is known about the development of object exploration during infancy, it remains to be understood whether and how olfaction can influence infants' interactions with novel objects. To address these issues, sixteen infants aged 7-15 months were videotaped during two consecutive 5-min free play sessions with a scented or an unscented version of visually similar objects. Results indicate that adding an odor to a novel object influenced the infants' behavior: the infants exhibited more and longer manipulations and mouthing of the unscented object than of the scented object. The differential responsiveness to the scented, relative to the unscented, object was …

Standard and non-standard neutrino properties

2002

I review the interpretation of solar and atmospheric neutrino data in terms neutrino oscillations and describe some ways to account for the required neutrino masses and mixing angles from first principles, both within top-down and bottom-up approaches. I also discuss non-oscillation phenomena such as nu-less double beta which may probe the absolute scale of neutrino mass, and also reveal its Majorana nature. I note that leptonic CP violation induced by ``Majorana'' phases drop from oscillations but play a role in the leptogenesis scenario for the baryon asymmetry of the Universe. Direct tests of leptonic CP violation in oscillation experiments, such as neutrino factories, will be a tough ch…

1909

Paula Lakševica (Lackschewitz; 1865 – 1936) Moricsalā ievāktais vijolītes Viola canina × uliginosa herbārijs glabājas Herbarium Latvicum (RIG II) kolekcijā Latvijas Universitātes Muzeja Botānikas un mikoloģijas kolekcijās. Herbārijs ir ievākts, veicot sākotnējo salas floras izpēti, kurā piedalījās vairāki Baltijas dabaspētnieki. Izpētes rezultāti kalpoja par pamatu, Moricsalas dabas rezervāta izveidei.

Nonzero |U_e3| from charged lepton corrections and the atmospheric neutrino mixing angle

2013

After the successful determination of the reactor neutrino mixing angle theta(13) not equal 0.16 not equal 0, a new feature suggested by the current neutrino oscillation data is a sizeable deviation of the atmospheric neutrino mixing angle theta(23) from pi/4. Using the fact that the neutrino mixing matrix U = (UeU nu)-U-dagger, where U-e and U-nu result from the diagonalisation of the charged lepton and neutrino mass matrices, and assuming that U-nu has a i) bimaximal (BM), H) tri-bimaximal (TBM) form, or else Hi) corresponds to the conservation of the lepton charge L' = L-e - L mu - L-tau (LC), we investigate quantitatively what are the minimal forms of U-e, in terms of angles and phases …

Gain fractions of future neutrino oscillation facilities over T2K and NOvA

2013

We evaluate the probability of future neutrino oscillation facilities to discover leptonic CP violation and/or measure the neutrino mass hierarchy. We study how this probability is affected by positive or negative hints for these observables to be found at T2K and NO nu A. We consider the following facilities: LBNE; T2HK; and the 10 GeV Neutrino Factory (NF10), and show how their discovery probabilities change with the running time of T2K and NO nu A conditioned to their results. We find that, if after 15 years T2K and NO nu A have not observed a 90% CL hint of CP violation, then LBNE and T2HK have less than a 10% chance of achieving a 5 sigma discovery, whereas NF10 still has a similar to …

Probing atmospheric mixing and leptonic CP violation in current and future long baseline oscillation experiments

2017

We perform realistic simulations of the current and future long baseline experiments such as T2K, NO$\nu$A, DUNE and T2HK in order to determine their ultimate potential in probing neutrino oscillation parameters. We quantify the potential of these experiments to underpin the octant of the atmospheric angle $\theta_{23}$ as well as the value and sign of the CP phase $\delta_{CP}$.

Neutrino interaction classification with a convolutional neural network in the DUNE far detector

2020

The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment is a next-generation neutrino oscillation experiment that aims to measure CP-violation in the neutrino sector as part of a wider physics program. A deep learning approach based on a convolutional neural network has been developed to provide highly efficient and pure selections of electron neutrino and muon neutrino charged-current interactions. The electron neutrino (antineutrino) selection efficiency peaks at 90% (94%) and exceeds 85% (90%) for reconstructed neutrino energies between 2–5 GeV. The muon neutrino (antineutrino) event selection is found to have a maximum efficiency of 96% (97%) and exceeds 90% (95%) efficiency for reconstructed neutrino…
