Dynamics, evolutionary and epidemiological patterns of RNA viruses

2017

Viral infections, specifically those caused by RNA viruses such as Human Immunodeficiency virus (HIV), Hepatitis C virus (HCV) or Influenza, are among the most important public health concerns to humans due to their high prevalence and associated mortality. Prevention and treatment campaigns against these viruses usually had limited efficacy, partly because their biological features allow them to reach very high levels of diversity, both at the within- and between-host levels. Research focused on understanding the processes and mechanisms involved in the evolution of RNA viruses, and on the clinical and/or epidemiological consequences of their diversification, is important for improving the…

Adaptation and Preliminary Validation of the Fear of Coronavirus Vaccination Scale in the Prospective Study among a Representative Sample of Polish, …

2022

Although concerns about harm and side effects are among the most important factors determining vaccine hesitancy, research on the fear of vaccination is sparse. The purpose of this study is a validation the Fear of Coronavirus Vaccination Scale (FoCVVS), adapted from the Fear of COVID-19 Scale. A representative sample of 1723 young adults aged 20–40 from Poland, Israel, Slovenia, and Germany participated during two time-points of the third COVID-19 pandemic wave. The online survey included demographic variables and several well-being dimensions, including gender, vaccination status, fear of coronavirus (FoCV-19S), physical health (GSRH), life satisfaction (SWLS), and perceived stress (PSS-1…

Machine learning for mortality analysis in patients with COVID-19

2020

This paper analyzes a sample of patients hospitalized with COVID-19 in the region of Madrid (Spain). Survival analysis, logistic regression, and machine learning techniques (both supervised and unsupervised) are applied to carry out the analysis where the endpoint variable is the reason for hospital discharge (home or deceased). The different methods applied show the importance of variables such as age, O2 saturation at Emergency Rooms (ER), and whether the patient comes from a nursing home. In addition, biclustering is used to globally analyze the patient-drug dataset, extracting segments of patients. We highlight the validity of the classifiers developed to predict the mortality, reaching…

The use of phage FCL-2 as an alternative to chemotherapy against columnaris disease in aquaculture

2015

Flavobacterium columnare, the causative agent of columnaris disease in fish, causes millions of dollars of losses in the US channel catfish industry alone, not to mention aquaculture industry worldwide. Novel methods are needed for the control and treatment of bacterial diseases in aquaculture to replace traditionally used chemotherapies. A potential solution could be the use of phages, i.e., bacterial viruses, host-specific and self-enriching particles that can be can easily distributed via water flow. We examined the efficacy of phages to combat columnaris disease. A previously isolated phage, FCL-2, infecting F. columnare, was characterized by sequencing. The 47 142 bp genome of the phag…

Diversidad de mosquitos (Diptera: Culicidae) de Jarabacoa, República Dominicana

2019

Teschoviruses and sapeloviruses in faecal samples from wild boar in Spain

2013

Teschovirus and Sapelovirus are two genera of the Picornaviridae family, comprising highly variable and heterogeneous enteric viruses, commonly found in faecal samples from domestic pigs. Although both of them are also known to infect wild boar, studies on their presence in these wild suids are scarce. The present study aimed at determining the presence of porcine teschovirus (PTV) and sapelovirus (PSV) in free-living wild boar populations, as well as to study their relationships with similar viruses present in pigs. Fresh faecal samples (n = 63) from wild boar were collected in Doñana Biological Reserve (SW Spain) during 2007 and 2011, and analysed using multiplex RT-PCR for the simultaneo…
