Different Scales of Spatial Segregation of Two Species of Feather Mites on the Wings of a Passerine Bird

2011

The "condition-specific competition hypothesis" proposes that coexistence of 2 species is possible when spatial or temporal variations in environmental conditions exist and each species responds differently to those conditions. The distribution of different species of feather mites on their hosts is known to be affected by intrinsic host factors such as structure of feathers and friction among feathers during flight, but there is also evidence that external factors such as humidity and temperature can affect mite distribution. Some feather mites have the capacity to move through the plumage rather rapidly, and within-host variation in intensity of sunlight could be one of the cues involved …

Hybrid surface plasma modes in circular metal-coated tapered fibers

1999

The theory of hybrid surface plasma modes in metal-coated dielectric cylinders has been developed in recent years. We demonstrate that tapered fibers with a uniform waist and a circular metal coating can be designed for an efficient excitation of the fundamental hybrid surface plasma mode. Our experimental results are in good agreement with the theory and give the basis for the development of a novel type of all-fiber polarization-independent refractive-index sensor and tunable broadband wavelength filter.

Mechanical manipulation of molecular lattice parameters in smectic elastomers.

2006

Smectic liquid crystalline elastomers (SLCE) represent unique materials that combine a 1-D molecular lattice arrangement and orientational order with rubber-elasticity mediated by a polymer network. Such materials may exhibit large thermo-mechanical, opto-mechanical and electro-mechanical effects, due to the coupling of macroscopic sample geometry and microscopic structural features. It is shown that the molecular layer dimensions in the smectic phases can be influenced reversibly by macroscopic strain of the material. We present a microscopic model on the basis of experimental results obtained by mechanical dilatation measurements, optical interferometry, X-ray scattering, (13)C NMR, FTIR …

Characterization of diorganotin(IV) complexes with captopril. The first crystallographically authenticated metal complex of this anti-hypertensive ag…

2003

Abstract Diorganotin(IV) complexes R 2 Sn(cap) (capH 2 = N -[( S )-3-mercapto-2-methylpropionyl]- l -proline; R=Me, Et, n -Bu and t -Bu) were prepared and characterised. The FTIR and Raman spectra demonstrated that the organotin(IV) moieties interact with the {S} atom of the ligand, while the other coordination sites are the carboxylate and the amide –CO groups. Mossbauer Δ data showed that the diorganotin(IV) compounds adopt slightly distorted trigonal-bipyramidal (tbp) geometry. A single-crystal X-ray study was performed on the compound Me 2 Sn(cap): the Sn atom is five-coordinated in a distorted tbp environment, with two {O} atoms in the axial positions and the {S} and two {C} atoms in t…

Antibiotic as Ligand. Coordinating Behavior of the Cephalexin Towards Zn(II) and Cd(II) Ions

1987

The complex formation equilibria of Zn(II) and Cd(II) with cephalexin have been studied through potentiometric titrations. Experimental data were analyzed using the least squares computer program SUPERQUAD. The stability constants were 1g beta ZnCEX+ = 2.40, 1g beta Zn(CEX)(OH) = -4.54, 1g beta CdCEX+ = 2.18, and 1g beta Cd(CEX)(OH) = -5.18 (I = 0.1 M NaNO3), CEX complexes of formulae Zn(CEX)2(3)H2O and Cd(CEX)(OH)H2O have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectra, conductivity measurements, and electronic and NMR spectra. The thermal behavior of the synthesized compounds were studied by TGA and DTA. We conclude that the metal ion interacts with the amido group of…

Modulation of DNA binding by reversible metal-controlled molecular reorganizations of scorpiand-like ligands.

2012

DNA interaction with scorpiand azamacrocycles has been achieved through modulation of their binding affinities. Studies performed with different experimental techniques provided evidence that pH or metal-driven molecular reorganizations of these ligands regulate their ability to interact with calf thymus DNA (ctDNA) through an intercalative mode. Interestingly enough, metal-driven molecular reorganizations serve to increase or decrease the biological activities of these compounds significantly.

Cu(II) complexes with a sulfonamide derived from benzoguanamine. Oxidative cleavage of DNA in the presence of H2O2 and ascorbate

2004

Reaction between benzoguanamine (2,4-diamino-6-phenyl-1,3,5-triazine) and 2-mesitylenesulfonyl chloride leads to formation of a sulfonamide able to form two mononuclear Cu(II) complexes with a CuL(2) stoichiometry. The local environment of the metal cation is a distorted octahedron, with two ligands and two solvent molecules; both complexes crystallize in the monoclinic structure, space group P2(1), with Z=2. In the presence of ascorbate/H(2)O(2,) the two complexes significantly cleavage double-strand pUC18 DNA plasmid. Both complexes exhibit more nuclease efficiency that the copper phenantroline complex. From scavenging reactive oxygen studies we conclude that the hydroxyl radical and a si…

Cinoxacin complexes with divalent metal ions. Spectroscopic characterization. Crystal structure of a new dinuclear Cd(II) complex having two chelate-…

1998

Several cinoxacin (HCx) complexes with divalent metal ions have been prepared and characterized by spectroscopic techniques. The crystal structure of [Cd 2 (Cx) 4 (H 2 O) 2 ] · 10H 2 O has been determined by X-ray diffraction. The complex is triclinic, space group with unit-cell dimensions: a =10.412(2), b =11.119(2), c =13.143(6)A, α=76.78(4)°, β =74.59(3)°, γ =77.12(3)°, V =1406.0(8) A 3 . In this complex each cadmium atom is heptacoordinated; the metal environment is formed by two O keto and two O carbox atoms from two different cinoxacinate monoanions, two carboxylate oxygen atoms from a third cinoxacinate ligand and by one water oxygen atom on the seventh position. Two of the cinoxacin…

Structural and magnetic characterization of a 1D chain of [Co(II)2(mu-aqua)(mu-carboxylate)2] strung cores.

2009

A novel 1D chain built up from stringing of [Co2(μ-OH 2)(μ-O2CC(CH3)3)2] units with the bridging 2,2′-bipyrimidine ligand has been synthesized and structurally characterized. The chains are well isolated from each other by the bulky tert-butyl groups of the carboxlyates and show an alternating zigzag configuration for the Co(II) metallic centres. DC magnetic measurements show anti-ferromagnetic coupling, Jca.-3 cm-1 between adjacent Co(II) ions along the chain. Noticeably, good data fitting was obtained by means of simple models that neglect any kind of first order orbital contribution to the spin ground state, which is normally observed in Co(II) complexes. These results were further confi…
