Abstract The hydrothermal ageing of epoxy–thermoplastic blends, used as matrices for carbon fibre composites, cured by electron beam, has been studied. Two different thermoplastic percentages have been adopted. A suitable choice of both curing process and formulation parameters allows to carry out irradiation at mild temperature with several advantages, coming from a “non thermal” process, for both the final properties of the materials and the environment. Synthetic rubber/thermoplastic blends were electrospun from their solutions. The rubber was a solid acrylonitrile/butadiene/acrylic acid copolymer and the thermoplastic was polyacrylonitrile. The aims of this study were to identify suitable systems and processing conditions for obtaining rubber-based electrospun nanofibers, to investigate the ability of an epoxy resin system to impregnate and swell selected hybrid rubber/thermoplastic mats, and to assess the impact of the nanofibers on the resin morphology and curing behavior. Diffusional enhancement of holograms: phenanthrenequinone in polycarbonate

As a further development of the manufacture of holographic gratings by the diffusion of phenanthrenequinone in polymer glass, the traditionally employed poly(methyl methacrylate) is replaced by poly(bisphenol-A-carbonate). The post-exposure growth and decay of the gratings in the two materials are compared at different spatial periods and temperatures. The medium with polycarbonate demonstrates a fortunate combination of significantly improved stability of the gratings and their faster development. Our results indicate that the polycarbonate materials promise to be suitable media for holographic optical elements and data storage.
Carbon fibre composite materials produced by gamma radiation induced curing of epoxy resins

It is well known that ionizing radiation can initiate polymerization of suitable monomers for many applications. In this work an epoxy dlfunctional monomer has been used as matrix of a carbon fibre composite in order to produce materials through gamma radiation, for aerospace and advanced automotive applications. Radiation curing has been performed at different absorbed doses and, as comparison, also thermal curing of the same monomer formulations has been done. Abstract 2,6,9,13-Tetraaza[14]paracyclophane ( 3, B323 ) represents a simple model for Zn containing enzymes like HCAII which possess additional reactive groups in the proximity of the metal center. The Zn 2+ . 3 complex shows notable catalytic activity for the hydrolysis of p -nitrophenyl acetate. Structural modifications of 3 which affect to the non coordinated nitrogen atom greatly modify the catalytic activity of the receptor.

Polymers in general and metal-containing polymers in particular are often sparingly soluble or insoluble, in contrast to small molecules. Thus, special significance is attached to characterization techniques that can be applied to the materials as solids. Here, three techniques are discussed that give structural information gained from the solid material. Mossbauer spectroscopy is a powerful technique that may give information on the structure about the metal-containing moiety for about 44 different nuclei. Rigid polymer materials with hologram enhancement by molecular diffusion

The principle of diffusional enhancement has been embodied in the rigid glassy polymer with phenanthrenequinone able to photochemically attach to surrounding macromolecules, thus forming a permanent grating. Owing to material stiffness, it does not suffer from shrinkage and can be made very thick; serving a basis for very stable spectrally selective elements. Replacement of commonly used acrylic glass by polycarbonate ensures further significant improvement of performance and stability of 3D holographic optical elements and memories.
