However, metallic or ceramic bracket bonding to femtosecond lasertreated zirconia surfaces has not been tested. The practicability of the bioactive glass ceramic Cernvitnl® in ear surgery was tested in animals. The histological findings are presented. Over the last 3 years implants of bioactive glass ceramic were used in humans. Prostheses for the total or partial reconstruction of the ossicular chain and the reconstruction of the bony wall of the outer ear canal were fashioned. We have conducted about 300 tympanoplasties and 60 total or partial reconstructions of the bony wall of the outer ear canal. The otoscopic and functional results were satisfactory.

Tissue reactions to glass ceramics in the middle ear

The bioactive glass ceramic "Ceravital" was used to fashion prostheses for the replacement of various ossicles in the middle ear. They were tested in 70 rabbit ears, where they were accepted in osseous areas without formation of surrounding fibrous tissue. Histological examinations regularly showed an osseous bond with the surrounding bony tissue. Mucous membrane covered these ossicular chain prostheses and showed no evidence of inflammatory reactions. Glass ceramic implants were also used to reconstruct the ossicular chain and the posterior wall of the outer ear canal in 100 patients. The functional results were satisfactory in all cases.

Gold nanoparticles supported on different oxides (SiO2, CeO2 and TiO2) were prepared by the SMAD (solvated metal atom dispersion) and deposition–precipitation (DP) techniques. The physical and chemical characterization of the catalysts was performed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) and the catalytic activity was tested during the reaction of low temperature CO oxidation. Gold catalysts supported on cerium oxide were prepared by solvated metal atom dispersion (SMAD), by deposition-precipitation (DP), and by coprecipitation (CP) methods and were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), temperature programmed reduction (TPR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The catalytic activity was tested in the CO oxidation reaction. The structural and surface analyses evidenced the presence of a modified ceria phase in the case of the DP sample and the presence of pure ceria and gold metal crystallites in the case of the SMAD and CP samples. The thermocatalytic, photocatalytic and photothermo-catalytic oxidation of some volatile organic compounds (VOCs), 2-propanol, ethanol and toluene, was investigated over brookite TiO2-CeO2 composites. The multi-catalytic approach based on the synergistic effect between solar photocatalysis and thermocatalysis led to the considerable decrease in the conversion temperatures of the organic compounds. The preferential adsorption coefficient, lambda, of poly(methyl methacrylate), PMMA, in solutions formed by an epoxy resin in tetrahydrofuran (THF), was studied by size-exclusion chromatography (SEC). Only PMMA of lowest molar mass was preferentially solvated by epoxy but at low concentrations of epoxy in the mixture. At higher epoxy content PMMA was preferentially solvated by THF. A simultaneous and competitive solvation between the specific interactions PMMA-epoxy and the self association of epoxy at high concentrations would be the responsible of this inversion point. In this research, the Aristida adscensionis fibers (AAFs) were taken out from the plants and its fundamental properties anlayzed for the first time. The AAFs were characterized and compared with other natural fibers by the use of physico-chemical analysis and various characterization techniques such as FT-IR, XRD, NMR, TGA, SEM and AFM. Chemical analysis showed that A. adscensionis fibers have a high cellulose content of 70.78% whereas the contents of lignin and wax are equal to 8.91% and 2.26%, respectively.
