The Returns to Education in Rwanda

2005

05077; International audience; Based on data from the 1999–2001 Household Living Conditions Survey conducted by the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning, we estimate wage equations for employees in Rwanda, treating the choice of employment sector as an endogenous process and making separate estimates for workers in the modern and traditional sectors of the economy. The results show that returns to education increase with the level of education, contrary to the pattern typically reported in the literature and that the returns to higher education is particularly high in Rwanda. A noteworthy feature in the results is that the returns to education are quite different across sectors of empl…

Advance Directives. Comparison of current legislation within the European Union

2021

Abstract Advance Directives have been legally binding in Spain since the publication of Act 41/2002, of 14th November, which regulates patients’ rights to autonomy and obligations concerning clinical information and recording clinical information. However, the situation in each country of the European Union remains heterogeneous and unknown to most health care professionals. By collecting and studying the legislation on patients' rights in European Union countries we have made an updated comparison of the different features of Advance Directives in each country. Only 15 of the 28 European Union Countries have developed specific rules on advance directives which makes them legally binding in…

Nasal provocation testing as an international standard for evaluation of allergic and nonallergic rhinitis.

2005

Standardized nasal provocation testing (NPT) has been shown to be a safe and very useful tool in the diagnosis of allergic and nonallergic rhinitis. However, in the United States, its use has been mostly limited to scientific investigations, and it has not yet been widely accepted as a standard diagnostic procedure in clinical practice. NPT aims to identify and quantify the clinical relevance of inhalant allergens or occupational irritants. During NPT, nasal respiratory mucosa is exposed to an airborne substance suspected to cause symptoms in the respective individual. Clinical reactions are monitored in a controlled and standardized fashion. Nasal secretions, symptoms such as itching, snee…

Influence of Regular Rhythmic Versus Textural Sound Sequences on Semantic and Conceptual Processing

2021

Conceptual priming studies have shown that listening to musical primes triggers semantic activation. The present study further investigated with a free semantic evocation task, 1) how rhythmic vs. textural structures affect the amount of words evoked after a musical sequence, and 2) whether both features also affect the content of the semantic activation. Rhythmic sequences were composed of various percussion sounds with a strong underlying beat and metrical structure. Textural sound sequences consisted of blended timbres and sound sources evolving over time without identifiable pulse. Participants were asked to verbalize the concepts evoked by the musical sequences. We measured the number …

Effects of prison work programmes on the employability of ex-prisoners

2014

This paper presents the results of a study that links information from the prison system with information from the Spanish Social Security System in order to study the employability of former inmates of prisons in Catalonia, Spain. Few studies of this type have been carried out in the world and this is the first in Spain. The results show that 43.6 percent of ex-prisoners find a job after serving their sentence, but their integration in the labour market tends to be fragile, confirming that it is a very vulnerable group. It was also found that prison work has a favourable effect on employability and that vocational training has a lesser or no effect. Fil: Alós, Ramon. Universitat Autònoma d…

Attribute based access control scheme with controlled access delegation for collaborative E-health environments

2017

Abstract Modern electronic healthcare (e-health) settings constitute collaborative environments with complex access requirements. Thus, there is a need for sophisticated fine-grained access control mechanisms to cater these access demands and thereby experience the full potential of e-health systems. In order to realize a flexible access control scheme, integrating access delegation is of paramount importance. However, access delegation has to be enforced in a controlled manner so that it will not jeopardize the security of the system. In this paper, we addressed this issue through proposing an attribute based access control scheme integrated with controlled access delegation capabilities. …

Blockchain Based Delegatable Access Control Scheme for a Collaborative E-Health Environment

2018

Modern electronic healthcare (e-health) settings constitute collaborative environments requiring sophisticated fine-grained access control mechanisms to cater their access demands. Access delegatability is quite crucial to realize fine-grained, flexible access control schemes compatible with such environments. In this paper, we addressed this issue through proposing an attribute based access control scheme integrated with controlled access delegation capabilities suitable for a multi-domain e-health environment. We have utilized the blockchain technology to manage attribute assignments, delegations as well as revocations. The scheme enables delegations in a controlled manner without jeopard…

How teachers in different educational contexts view their roles

2003

Abstract Based on the premise that teachers’ perceptions of their professional roles are closely linked to their self images and their impact on the learning and achievement of their students, a study was conducted to investigate the relationship between the context of teachers’ work and their views of themselves as professionals. Sixty teachers in Israeli vocational senior high schools participated in the study. Half taught high-achieving and half low-achieving students. Teachers’ professional images of self were uncovered by asking them to match their images of themselves as teachers with drawings of other, carefully chosen, occupations and to comment on their choices. The use of metaphor…
