Adapted processing of catadioptric images using polarization imaging

A non parametric method that defines a pixel neighborhood within catadioptric images is presented in this paper. It is based on an accurate modeling of the mirror shape by using polarization imaging. Unlike the most of current processing methods in the literature, this method is non-parametric and can deal with the deformation of catadioptric images. Particle energization in colliding subcritical collisionless shocks investigated in the laboratory

Context. Colliding collisionless shocks appear across a broad variety of astrophysical phenomena and are thought to be possible sources of particle acceleration in the Universe. Aims. Oblique surface waves at an interface between a metal–dielectric superlattice and an isotropic dielectric

We investigate the existence and dispersion characteristics of surface waves that propagate at an interface between a metal–dielectric superlattice and an isotropic dielectric. Within the long-wavelength limit, when the effective-medium (EM) approximation is valid, the superlattice behaves like a uniaxial plasmonic crystal with the main optical axes perpendicular to the metal–dielectric interfaces. We demonstrate that if such a semi-infinite plasmonic crystal is cut normally to the layer interfaces and brought into contact with a semi-infinite dielectric, a new type of surface mode can appear. Axial resolution in two-color excitation fluorescence microscopy by phase-only binary apodization

We study the effect of a kind of binary phase-only filters, the Toraldo filters, in two-color excitation fluorescence microscopy. We show that by simple insertion of a properly designed Toraldo filter in one of the illumination arms the axial resolution of the system is significantly improved. Specifically, the main peak of the point spread function is narrowed by 22% along the axial direction.

Bloch surface waves engineering in one-dimensional photonic crystals with a chiral cap layer

We investigate the localization properties of surface waves created at the interface between a truncated 1D photonic crystal and homogeneous medium in the presence of a chiral cap layer using the transfer matrix method. The numerical results show that the interface can support surface waves with both transverse electric and transverse magnetic polarizations. We demonstrate that the surface waves can be engineered by varying the chirality parameter of the cap layer, which plays an important role in controlling and localization of surface states. Nonlinear polarization effects in optical fibers: polarization attraction and modulation instability [Invited]

We review polarization stabilization techniques based on the polarization attraction effect in low-birefringence fibers. Polarization attraction or pulling may be based on cross-polarization modulation, on parametric amplification, and on Raman or Brillouin scattering. We also review methods for laser frequency conversion based on polarization modulation instabilities in low- and high-birefringence fibers, and photonic crystal fibers. Polarization instabilities in nonlinear fibers may also be exploited for sensing applications.

Numerical simulations of air pollutant dispersion in a stratified planetary boundary layer

Abstract A numerical model is described for computing pollutant concentration distributions downwind from a source. It is based on the three-dimensional dispersion equation governing the time-dependent advective and diffusive transport of air pollutants and is solved numerically by a mixed Lagrangian-Eulerian finite-difference scheme. The model includes the vertical wind shear, the turning of the actual wind, and vertical variations of the vertical eddy diffusivity. There is currently a high level of concern in many countries that exposure to radiowaves from mobile phone base stations may be hazardous to health. When investigating such suggested risks, epidemiologists need to define an exposure metric that can reliably discriminate between exposed and unexposed groups of people. Consistent treatment of relativistic corrections in deuteron photodisintegration in a one-pion-exchange model

Using a one-pion-exchange model for the nucleon-nucleon interaction the relativistic corrections to potential and to the electromagnetic operators are derived in a power expansion of (p/M). All corrections up to the order (p/M)3 are consistently included. Numerical results are shown for differential cross section and polarization observables for deuteron photodisintegration. A sizeable influence of relativistic effects on some observables is found even at low energies. A comparison of our operators with the expressions of other authors is given.

Extracorporeal shock wave-mediated changes in proliferation, differentiation, and gene expression of human osteoblasts.

The goal of this study was to determine whether cell proliferation, differentiation, and gene expression of primary human osteoblasts (hOB) are influenced by shock wave application (SWA).Osteoblast cultures were isolated from cancellous bone fragments and treated with 500 impulses of energy flux densities of 0.06 mJ/mm, 0.18 mJ/mm, 0.36 mJ/mm, and 0.50 mJ/mm. Twenty-four hours and 96 hours after SWA cell proliferation, alkaline phosphatase activity, and mineralization were analyzed.
