Reshaping Monetary Policy after the Great Crash: John H. Williams at the NY FED
2020
John H. Williams was an influential economist and central banker in the interwar years. A Harvard University professor since 1929 specialized in international trade and monetary economics, he joined the NY Fed in 1933 and became its vice-President in 1936. This paper aims to provide a general assessment of Williams’ contributions to monetary and fiscal policy during his tenure at the NY FED. We shall try to do so by following a twofold perspective: i. establish connections between Williams’ more theoretical works, his interpretations of the great depression and some policy decisions enacted by the FED in the 1930s; ii. provide new archival evidence on what was the part Williams played in th…
Crassula campestris(Eckl. & Zeyh.) Endl.(Crassulaceae), a new record for the Italian flora
1998
Abstract Brullo, S., Campo, G., Marceno, C., Romano, S. & Siracusa, G.: Crassula campestris (Eckl. & Zeyh.) Endl. (Crassulaceae), a new record for the Italian flora. — Willdenowia 28: 53–58. 1998. — ISSN 0511-9618. Crassula campestris, a species widespread in S Africa, was discovered in Sicily near Palermo, which is a new record for the Italian flora. A description and illustration of C. campestris is provided and the species is compared with C. tillaea and C. basaltica, the two other Crassula species in Sicily.

Correlates and Predictors of L2 Willingness to Communicate in Polish Adolescents
2014
The concept of willingness to communicate (WTC) in L2 denotes “a readiness to enter into discourse at a particular time with a specific person or persons, using a L2” (MacIntyre et al. 1998, p. 547). In the early model of L2 WTC, there are two main variables influencing its levels: perceived communication competence and communication anxiety (MacIntyre 1994). WTC is now considered a fundamental goal of second language education (MacIntyre et al. 2003) because it offers L2 learners “greater chances for L2 practice and authentic L2 usage” (MacIntyre et al. 2001, p. 382). Students taking the risk of initiating communication in a language they do not know well are likely to become more proficie…
ADAMTS13 In 4 Different VWF/VIII Concentrates and Its Impact on Therapy.
2010
Abstract Abstract 3677 Introduction: The hemostatic activity of von Willebrand Factor (VWF) is mainly controlled by the plasma metalloprotease ADAMTS13, which cleaves ultralarge VWF multimers. A qualitative or quantitative deficiency of VWF induces the most common hemorrhagic diathesis, the von Willebrand Disease (VWD). The current classification graduates the VWD in three major types. Depending on severity and the type of VWD the treatment with VWF/FVIII concentrates may by necessary. The commercially available VWF/FVIII concentrates differ in their multimer structure and furthermore also in their pharmacokinetics. We investigated commercial VWF concentrates with respect to their ADAMTS 13…
UNOS COBRES FLAMENCOS DEL SIGLO XVII EN TALCA (CHILE)
2017
EnglishIn this study we present four oil on copper paintings of Flemish descent, one by Wil lem van Herp (1614-1677), whom we also attribute the remaining ones. His works may date back to the second half of the 17th century and are inspired by Rubens and Teniers the Elder: Most of them belonge…
The Power of Science Communication
2014
The study will investigate the concepts of science communication and its benefits. Being good communicators in general will help scientists to be better science communicators in order to: • help the public understand science as part of their real lives, • see not only the importance of the science and its source of pleasure and wonder, but also to be able to make decisions about it as citizens, policymakers, funders, etc. • help in educating citizenry, concerned about the threats facing our planet to better shape the direction of political and policy decisions, because how scientists communicate this information may have measurable conservation impacts on the future of our planet. More than…
Chromosomal Dynamics in Cercopithecini Studied by Williams-Beuren probe mapping
2010
Chromosomal evolution in the tribe Cercopithecini and in related taxa is highly debated. Uncertainty in reconstruction is mainly related to the great genetic variability and polymorphism of the taxa. Recent molecular and karyological efforts individuate a split between genetically conservative, arbitrarily defi ned, “terrestrial” guenons and vervets, and genetically variable and derived “arboreal” guenons. We performed the mapping of WS loci probe (7q11.23) in order to verify the chromosomal dynamics of the genomes of three tree-dwelling species of the tribe: C. neglectus, C. mitis mitis, C. albogularis labiatus. Data from literature for the “ground-dwelling” Chlorocebus aethiops sabaeus ha…
Phylogeography of the Eurasian Willow Tit (Parus montanus) based on DNA sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene.
2002
The phylogeographic relationships of the trans-Palearctic Willow Tit assemblage were studied by obtaining sequence data from the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene from 34 specimens representing nine subspecies from across the species range. Four distinct genetic groups were identified: Parus montanus weigoldicus, P. m. affinis, P. m. songarus, and a clade containing six Eurasian subspecies (ssp. baicalensis, borealis, montanus, restrictus, rhenanus, and sachalinensis). P. m. weigoldicus, P. m. affinis, and P. m. songarus were reciprocally monophyletic and separated from each other and other subspecies by uncorrected genetic distances between 1.9 and 5.8%. The remaining six subspecies were clo…
Characterization of a Cu/Zn Superoxide dismutase-encoding gene region in Drosophila willistoni
1994
A Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase-encoding gene (Sod) from Drosophila willistoni was cloned and sequenced. The gene shows a typical structure for a fruit-fly Sod gene, with a coding region of 462 bp in two exons separated by a 417-bp intron. Comparison of the Sod sequences from D. willistoni and D. melanogaster suggests that these species are only remotely related. Downstream from the Sod gene, there is an ORF on the opposite strand that putatively encodes the last exon of an unidentified gene. The polyadenylation signals of the two genes are separated by only 61 bp in D. willistoni, conforming to the common picture of compact dipteran genomes.
