“From Savage to Sublime (And Partway Back): Indians and Antiquity in Early Nineteenth-Century American Literature”

This article examines the comparisons made between Indians and Antiquity in early nineteenth-century American literature (notably in the works of Washington Irving and James Fenimore Cooper); to do so, it begins by reaching back to references in European and American writings of the eighteenth century. One of the main motivations behind the associations between Native Americans and the Ancient World made in the early decades of the nineteenth century was to “elevate” Indians in order to transform them into worthy symbols of the recently established United States. Tre dei sei ospedali medievali di Sciacca furono fondati da esponenti del ceto mercantile e nobiliare catalano e valenzano trapiantato in Sicilia. Questo dato permette di mostrare il ruolo svolto dalle famiglie iberiche a Sciacca. This dissertation is the first scientific description of life and activity of Janusz Radziwill (1880-1967) who was the Berlin descendant of famous Lithuanian house, the lord of Olyka manor, and the owner of Nieborow as well. Being the head of State with the Polish Regency Council he co-originated the Polish Diplomatic Service. In current global crisis the strong flows of financial social and relational capitals that powered urban regeneration over the last fifteen years are no longer available to be tapped in an indiscriminate manner as was the case until just a few years ago. The most dynamic cities in the future will no longer be those that are able to attract urban projects and investors driven by the real estate market or leisure-based development but the cities that have deep and different cultural resources and that are able to use them as the basis for creating new urban cultures and for generating new economic values. L’articolo illustra i primi risultati ottenuti nell’ambito dell’analisi prestazionale del vetromattone fotovoltaico, un prodotto edilizio innovativo derivato dall’integrazione di celle fotovoltaiche di terza generazione (DSSC) nel vetromattone, ideato per la realizzazione di involucri traslucidi energeticamente effi cienti ed “attivi”, in grado di ridurre i consumi energetici degli edifi ci e di produrre, al contempo, energia verde. L’analisi è stata condotta su quattro differenti ipotesi di integrazione. In this article the fi rst results of the performance analysis of the photovoltaic glassblock are given. The photovoltaic glassblock is an innovative product which integrates third generation solar cells (DSSC) invented for the construction of translucent building envelopes energetically effi cient and “active” able to reduce the energy consumption in buildings and to produce at the same time green energy. The analysis was conducted on four different hypotheses of integration through numerical simulations in order to evaluate the energy absorption and the optical performance of the device. The software simulations represent a fi rst step for the understanding of the performance of the element and prelude to an experimental analysis session. The results of a research conducted about national and international patents publications on the DSSC technology and its applications will be illustrated too.
