Spain is one of the most active European countries in the open access (OA) movement. Although the gold route has scarcely been used, the green route has been intensively implemented through fulfilment of European and national mandates and the development of institutional policies. X-rays from accretion shocks in classical T Tauri stars: 2D MHD modeling and the role of local absorption

AbstractIn classical T Tauri stars (CTTS) strong shocks are formed where the accretion funnel impacts with the denser stellar chromosphere. Although current models of accretion provide a plausible global picture of this process, some fundamental aspects are still unclear: the observed X-ray luminosity in accretion shocks is order of magnitudes lower than predicted; the observed density and temperature structures of the hot post-shock region are puzzling and still unexplained by models.To address these issues we performed 2D MHD simulations describing an accretion stream impacting onto the chromosphere of a CTTS, exploring different configurations and strengths of the magnetic field. Tinkering with the two-to-one interview: Reflections on the use of two interviewers in qualitative constructionist inquiry

Abstract Typically, qualitative interviews implicate a single interviewer. In this article, we consider an alternative comprising the simultaneous, active involvement of two interviewers. We base our considerations on experiences using the two-to-one interview in a nationwide research project on disability and physical activity. In addition to untapping and developing a qualitative interview method, the article provides an example in action of tinkering in qualitative inquiry. Tinkering entails a constant questioning of what to do, what is best, and what is appropriate within each moment of the research. Optimal Flight Path Determination in Turbulent Air: A Modified EKF Approach

By using the Extended Kalman Filter an accurate path following in turbulent air is performed. The procedure employs simultaneously two dierent EKFs: the rst one estimates disturbances, the second one aords to determine the necessary controls displacements for rejecting those ones. To tune the EKFs an optimization algorithm has been designed to automatically determine Process Noise Covariance and Measurement Noise Covariance matrices. Does predation maintain eyespot plasticity in Bicyclus anynana?

The butterfly Bicyclus anynana exhibits phenotypic plasticity involving the wet-season phenotype, which possesses marginal eyespots on the ventral surface of the wings, and the dry-season form, which lacks these eyespots. We examined the adaptive value of phenotypic plasticity of B. anynana in relation to the defence mechanisms of crypsis and deflection. We assessed the visibility differences between spotless and spotted butterflies against backgrounds of brown (dry season) or green (wet season) leaves. Virtual reality system for planning minimally invasive neurosurgery

Object The authors report on their experience with a 3D virtual reality system for planning minimally invasive neurosurgical procedures. Methods Between October 2002 and April 2006, the authors used the Dextroscope (Volume Interactions, Ltd.) to plan neurosurgical procedures in 106 patients, including 100 with intracranial and 6 with spinal lesions. The planning was performed 1 to 3 days preoperatively, and in 12 cases, 3D prints of the planning procedure were taken into the operating room. Study and Modelling of the Vacuum Swing Adsorption (VSA) Process Employed in the Production of Oxygen

An isothermal and non-equilibrium mathematical model was provided for the multi-component adsorption process. In addition, the software was developed for the VSA-based production of oxygen with the use of a CaX zeolite molecular sieve. The mathematical model and computer software were verified on the basis of experimental data. The study employed a test stand comprising two adsorption columns. The adsorption pressure P A = 150 and 135 kPa and desorption pressure P D = 20 kPa were adopted in the experiments. The tests produced oxygen with the purity of 90–94% O 2 (vol), at an efficiency of 55–73% and productivity of 570–850 kg O 2 per ton per day. The calculation results showed good consiste…
