Hypoxia in CNS Pathologies: Emerging Role of miRNA-Based Neurotherapeutics and Yoga Based Alternative Therapies
2017
Cellular respiration is a vital process for the existence of life. Any condition that results in deprivation of oxygen (also termed as hypoxia) may eventually lead to deleterious effects on the functioning of tissues. Brain being the highest consumer of oxygen is prone to increased risk of hypoxia-induced neurological insults. This in turn has been associated with many diseases of central nervous system (CNS) such as stroke, Alzheimer's, encephalopathy etc. Although several studies have investigated the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying ischemic/hypoxic CNS diseases, the knowledge about protective therapeutic strategies to ameliorate the affected neuronal cells is meager. This has au…
Acute effects of psychological relaxation techniques between two physical tasks.
2016
The concept of recovery strategies includes various ways to achieve a state of well-being, prevent underrecovery syndromes from occurring and re-establish pre-performance states. A systematic application of individualised relaxation techniques is one of those. Following a counterbalanced cross-over design, 27 sport science students (age 25.22 ± 1.08 years; sports participation 8.08 ± 3.92 h/week) were randomly assigned to series of progressive muscle relaxation, systematic breathing, power nap, yoga, and a control condition. Once a week, over the course of five weeks, their repeated sprint ability was tested. Tests (6 sprints of 4 s each with 20 s breaks between them) were executed on a non…
Self-diploidization in Saccharomyces cerevisiae kar2 heterokaryons
1993
Zygotes isolated by micromanipulation from crosses of Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains, one of which carries a kar mutation, give rise most frequently to cytoductant colonies showing the nuclear constitution of either one of the two haploid parental strains. In crosses of kar2-1 strains to wild-type, about 10% of the cytoductants of both mating types are homozygous autodiploids. There is evidence indicating that self-diploidization occurs by fusion between sibling nuclei in the heterokaryotic zygote. Here we describe this phenomenon and propose to take advantage of it for the construction of genotypically-defined diploids able to mate, and of polyploid strains, which are useful tools in gen…
Impact of COVID-19 Confinement on Physical Activity and Sedentary Behaviour in Spanish University Students: Role of Gender
2021
During the COVID-19 pandemic, entire populations were instructed to live in home-confinement to prevent the expansion of the disease. Spain was one of the countries with the strictest conditions, as outdoor physical activity was banned for nearly two months. This study aimed to analyse the changes in physical activity and sedentary behaviours in Spanish university students before and during the confinement by COVID-19 with special focus on gender. We also analysed enjoyment, the tools used and motivation and impediments for doing physical activity. An online questionnaire, which included the International Physical Activity Questionnaire Short Form and certain &ldquo
Social Suffering and an Approach to Professionals’ Burnout
2014
Individual and social problems require the assistance of professionals who are accustomed to work with “suffering” on daily basis. Psychologists, physicians, and social workers step into this role helping alleviate the suffering and improve the quality of life of their patients and clients. But, inevitably, they experience suffering as they address others’ problems. Their own well-being and quality of life may be reduced by their work in helping. We interviewed Argentinean professionals about their experience of patient, personal, and suffering conditions in order to determine the level of transference and turn to the practice of Yoga as a possible physical and psychological approach to med…

However, few evidences are …
Prefazione alla versione italiana
2022
FORMARE ALLO YOGA CONTEMPORANEO. TRASFORMARE IL CORPO, LA MENTE E L'ANIMA
2022

Sebbene i capitoli di questa Opera presentino finalità specifiche proprie, essi si completano gli uni con gli altri." Tradurre e scrivere sono processi mentali e linguistici diversi, sebbene le due a…
Benefits of Yoga practice on body posture and on psychological and cognitive functions in children aged 8-10 years
Background. Many authors have reported benefits related to yoga practice. In particular, the scientific literature showed the influences of yoga on physical performance and cognitive functions. However, only few researches have examined the role of this training practice in children. For this reason, the purpose of the present study was to investigate the effects on body posture and features as self-esteem and attention in children aged 8-10 years. Materials and method. Sixty-five subjects (male n=28, female n=37) aged 8-10 years and attending primary school were enrolled for the study and randomly assigned into an experimental group (EG) which included 28 participants and a control group (…
Yoga en España. Proceso de regulación profesional
2015
New approaches to spirituality go hand in hand with emerging physical, psychological and spiritual movements that have had a clear impact on many areas, and in particular on health and well-being. It is increasingly common to find nurses teaching yoga or doctors prescribing mindfulness. Use of socalled Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) is becoming mainstream. Health centres, medical practices and even schools are offering a growing number of alternative therapies, resulting in the need for effective legal regulation of these activities, both in terms of professional recognition and training. In Spain, recent legislation represents a significant breakthrough in the regulation of y…
