The role of network connectivity on epileptiform activity.
2021
AbstractA number of potentially important mechanisms have been identified as key players to generate epileptiform activity, such as genetic mutations, activity-dependent alteration of synaptic functions, and functional network reorganization at the macroscopic level. Here we study how network connectivity at cellular level can affect the onset of epileptiform activity, using computational model networks with different wiring properties. The model suggests that networks connected as in real brain circuits are more resistant to generate seizure-like activity. The results suggest new experimentally testable predictions on the cellular network connectivity in epileptic individuals, and highligh…
Observation of the Kibble-Zurek scaling law for defect formation in ion crystals
2013
Traversal of a symmetry-breaking phase transition at finite rates can lead to causally separated regions with incompatible symmetries and the formation of defects at their boundaries, which has a crucial role in quantum and statistical mechanics, cosmology and condensed matter physics. This mechanism is conjectured to follow universal scaling laws prescribed by the Kibble-Zurek mechanism. Here we determine the scaling law for defect formation in a crystal of 16 laser-cooled trapped ions, which are conducive to the precise control of structural phases and the detection of defects. The experiment reveals an exponential scaling of defect formation γ(β), where γ is the rate of traversal of the …
Evaluation of the electrochemical anion recognition ofNO3−-imprinted poly(Azure A) inNO3−/Cl−mixed solutions by ac-electrogravimetry
2016
Abstract During the reversible electrochemical reactions of the intrinsically conducting polymer (ICP) films, ions are inserted in them to balance the inner charge site of the polymer. For this reason, doped ICP films with anions or cations can be good candidates for the electrochemical removal of contaminant ions from wastewater. In this work, a polymer of a phenothiazine derivative (poly(Azure A or PAA)) was electrosynthesized by cyclic voltammetry in aqueous solutions using nitrate ions as a structural template. After that, PAA film was repeatedly cycled in identical conditions in a monomer-free solution. The electrochemical anion recognition of the nitrate-imprinted poly(Azure A) ( N O …
An approach to the electrochemical activity of poly-(phenothiazines) by complementary electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and Vis–NIR spectroscopy
2010
Abstract The electroactivity of two poly-(phenothiazine), the poly-(Azure A) and the poly-(Methylene Blue), has been compared in this work. The spectroelectrochemical results prove clearly the existence of two electroactive moieties integrated in the polymeric lattice, the phenothiazine ring (detected by changes of absorbance at 590 and 685 nm) and the newly formed covalent links which fixes the monomers in the backbone of the polymer (detected by changes of absorbance at 460 and 875 nm). Differences in the electrochemical response of both polymers are due to differences in this covalent link. However in both polymers, the charge balance during electrochemical reactions takes place by the e…
Preventing problematic internet use during the COVID-19 pandemic: Consensus guidance
2020
As a response to the COVID-19 pandemic, many governments have introduced steps such as spatial distancing and “staying at home” to curb its spread and impact. The fear resulting from the disease, the ‘lockdown’ situation, high levels of uncertainty regarding the future, and financial insecurity raise the level of stress, anxiety, and depression experienced by people all around the world. Psychoactive substances and other reinforcing behaviors (e.g., gambling, video gaming, watching pornography) are often used to reduce stress and anxiety and/or to alleviate depressed mood. The tendency to use such substances and engage in such behaviors in an excessive manner as putative coping strategies i…
Main pathologies causing confiscation of equine livestock intended for human consumption
2018
The horse is a herbivorous animal that is used for various purposes, one of them is the production of meat intended for human consumption. Worldwide, horse meat production is led by Asia, leaving Europe in third place. Spain is not a country with a great tradition of consumption of this meat, even so, 18,275 farms are dedicated to it, sacrificing 52,908 horses per year. Specifically, 6,368 horses are slaughtered approximately in a year in the Valencian Community. The objective of the present study is to determine, through antemortem and postmortem inspection, the causes of the main seizures produced in equine livestock destined for human consumption, recognizing the lesions and taking the p…
1H-NMR study of a cobalt-substituted blue copper protein: Pseudomonas aeruginosa Co(II)-azurin.
1995
Substitution of copper by cobalt in blue copper proteins gives a paramagnetic metalloderivative suitable for paramagnetic NMR studies. A thorough analysis of the 1H-NMR spectrum of Pseudomonas aeruginosa Co(II)-azurin is presented here. All the observable contact-shifted signals as well as many other paramagnetic signals from protons placed up to about 1.0 nm around the metal center, including some residues belonging to functionally important parts of the protein like the hydrophobic patch and the His35 region, have been assigned. The results obtained permit the detection and study of structural variations like those originated by the His35 ionization, and allow us to draw a feasible pictur…
Bezservera integrāciju izstrāde Microsoft Azure mākoņvidē
2019
The Crystal Structure of Nickel(II)-Azurin
1995
The nickel(II)-azurin metalloderivative has been crystallized and its structure solved at 0.205-nm resolution by X-ray diffraction. The overall structure is not modified by the metal exchange and the only differences with regard to the native copper(II)-azurin occur in the metal site region. These variations affect principally the axial ligands. Nickel co-ordinates more strongly to the carbonyl oxygen of Gly45 while its distance to the Met121 S4 enlarges up to 0.330 nm. The resulting metal center structure is intermediate between those of the Cu(II) and Zn(II) azurins, and can be described as distorted tetrahedral. However, the existence of contact interaction between Met121 and the nickel …
Mpdz is a quantitative trait gene for drug withdrawal seizures
2004
Physiological dependence and associated withdrawal episodes can constitute a powerful motivational force that perpetuates drug use and abuse. Using robust behavioral models of drug physiological dependence in mice, positional cloning, and sequence and expression analyses, we identified an addiction-relevant quantitative trait gene, Mpdz. Our findings provide a framework to define the protein interactions and neural circuit by which this gene's product (multiple PDZ domain protein) affects drug dependence, withdrawal and relapse.
