The representatives of the liturgical movement knew that the renewal of the religious life of the faithful required a proper definition of the essence of the liturgy and of what the Church is. Then, they not only distanced themselves from the rubricist view of the liturgy, but also developed its new understanding and the importance of the faithful's active participation in celebrations. Musicologists and cultural researchers often consider the issue of songbooks, discussing their content, context of creation and history, as well as possible subsequent editions and changes occurring in them. The article discusses issues related to the functioning and usability of songbooks nowadays, seeking the answer to the question of whether songbooks are needed? It also discusses modern ways of replacing traditional songbooks with new technologies. The text includes examples of contemporary activities related not only to the development and publication of subsequent books, but also initiatives to maintain the songbook tradition and to show its value and timeless usefulness.

This article is dedicated to the history and meaning of the Catholic Song and Prayer Book for the faithful in Kłodzko county, the first edition of which appeared in 1878 and was edited by Wilhelm Kothe. The collection went through a total of six successive editions. It contained almost 200 various kinds of hymns with musical notations. They included above all old and indigenous church songs, which made the songbook very popular among the faithful in Kłodzko county. Many parishes even made a custom of offering it to children on the occasion of their first Holy Communion. The article presents the composing output of Gizela Maria Skop (born 1939), the representative of the contemporary Polish composers of liturgical chants. Her compositions are embedded in the liturgical reform of Vatican Council II and emerged in close correlation to the biblical and liturgical texts. Thanks to the skilful combination of text and melody, her compositions gained a considerable appreciation and have become a part of the canon of the commonly used liturgical chants.
