LA PREVENZIONE DELLE FRATTURE: THE EUROPEAN UNION GERIATRIC MEDICINE SOCIETY (EUGMS) STATEMENT

2016

NOT ALL FATS ARE UNHEALTHY

2018

You don't need to remove all fats from your diet because some of them actually help to promote good health. Fats are needed to build cell membranes, nerve covers, healthy hair and skin, and to absorb some vitamins and other nutrients. They also prevent muscle breakage during fasting or food shortage. However, it’s clever to choose the healthier types of fats and enjoy them in moderation instead of picking truly bad fats, which should be avoided. Good fats comprise monounsaturated found in olive oil, avocados, and most nuts, and polyunsaturated, contained in vegetable oils and fatty fish. Trans fat, found in margarine, shortenings, snacks, and industrial baked products are the worst fats for…

DEPRESSIONE E RISCHIO DI ISOLAMENTO NELLA POPOLAZIONE SICILIANA ULTRASESSANTACINQUENNE. SISTEMA DI SORVEGLIANZA PASSI D’ARGENTO

2015

Celiac disease in older persons: A case of seronegative disease

2017

A 68-year-old man with a history of smoking (former smoker of 40 cigarettes per day), euthyroid goiter, deep vein thrombosis and depression, came to our attention for weakness, cachexia, abdominal bloating and diarrhea lasting for almost six months. Furthermore, he had lost about 25 kilograms of weight in the last year and was bedridden for three months. Combining the results of serological, histopathological and genetic tests, he was diagnosed with a seronegative celiac disease. Gluten-free diet, combined with nutritional supplements and physical therapy, improved his clinical condition and allowed the recovery of weight and the walking ability. Celiac disease might be suspected in elderly…

Sepsis at ICU admission does not decrease 30-day survival in very old patients : a post-hoc analysis of the VIP1 multinational cohort study

2020

AbstractBackgroundThe number of intensive care patients aged ≥ 80 years (Very old Intensive Care Patients; VIPs) is growing. VIPs have high mortality and morbidity and the benefits of ICU admission are frequently questioned. Sepsis incidence has risen in recent years and identification of outcomes is of considerable public importance. We aimed to determine whether VIPs admitted for sepsis had different outcomes than those admitted for other acute reasons and identify potential prognostic factors for 30-day survival.ResultsThis prospective study included VIPs with Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) scores ≥ 2 acutely admitted to 307 ICUs in 21 European countries. Of 3869 acutely admi…

Sarcopenia reduces quality of life in the long-term: Longitudinal analyses from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing

2022

Abstract Purpose Mixed findings exist for sarcopenia/quality of life (QoL) relationship. Moreover, the majority of studies in this area have utilized a cross-sectional design or specific clinical populations. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to examine the association between sarcopenia at baseline and QoL at 10 years follow-up in a large representative sample of older English adults. Methods Sarcopenia was diagnosed as having low handgrip strength and low skeletal muscle mass index. QoL was measured using the CASP (control, autonomy, self-realisation and pleasure)-19, with higher values reflecting higher QoL. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was conducted to assess pro…

Gender-differences in disease distribution and outcome in hospitalized elderly: data from the REPOSI study.

2014

none 330 Women live longer and outnumber men. On the other hand, older women develop more chronic diseases and conditions such as arthritis, osteoporosis and depression, leading to a greater number of years of living with disabilities. The aim of this study was to describe whether or not there are gender differences in the demographic profile, disease distribution and outcome in a population of hospitalized elderly people.Retrospective observational study including all patients recruited for the REPOSI study in the year 2010. Analyses are referred to the whole group and gender categorization was applied.A total of 1380 hospitalized elderly subjects, 50.5\% women and 49.5\% men, were conside…

LONGEVITY AND THE SECRETS OF CENTENARIANS

2017

Aging of the world populations represents one of the most remarkable success stories of medicine and of humankind. Hence, the search for ways to prolong health expectancy is a primary goal in medicine. Human life expectancy increased extraordinarily during the last century worldwide. Life expectancy at birth has almost doubled in most developed countries over the last century, with the oldest group being the most rapidly growing segment of the population. The number of centenarians in Italy is over 16.000 and the number is over tripled in few years (they were 5.000 in 2001). Among older population, centenarians may be considered the best example of successful aging. The capacity to avoid, d…

Relationship between carotid intima-media thickness and non valvular atrial fibrillation type.

2015

OBJECTIVE: Carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) is a surrogate marker of subclinical atherosclerosis and it is able to predict both coronary and cerebral vascular events. No data exist on the association between cIMT and non valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) type. We conduct this study with the aim to analyze the association between abnormal cIMT and NVAF type. METHODS: A cross-sectional study of the "Atrial fibrillation Registry for Ankle-brachial index Prevalence Assessment-Collaborative Italian Study (ARAPACIS)" has been performed. Among 2027 patients enrolled in the ARAPACIS, 673 patients, who underwent carotid ultrasound examination to assess cIMT, were included in the study. RESULT…

LIVELLI DI ATTIVITÀ FISICA NELLA POPOLAZIONE SICILIANA ULTRASESSANTACINQUENNE. SISTEMA DI SORVEGLIANZA PASSI D’ARGENTO

2015
