Visceral adiposity in patients with psoriatic arthritis and psoriasis alone and its relationship with metabolic and cardiovascular risk
Abstract Background Fat mass distribution, especially in the abdominal visceral region, has been rarely evaluated in patients with PsA or psoriasis (PsO). Methods Patients with PsA and patients with PsO alone were evaluated and compared with control subjects (1:1 ratio in each patient group) matched for age, sex and BMI category. Body composition and fat distribution (android and visceral fat) were evaluated by DXA. Anthropometric measurements, disease activity and the systematic coronary risk evaluation (SCORE) cardiovascular risk were assessed. Metabolic parameters (insulin, homeostasis model assessment for insulin resistance), serum adipokines [total and high-molecular-weight adiponectin…
Effect of storage time and donor sex of transfused red blood cells on 1-year survival in patients undergoing cardiac surgery: an observational study
BACKGROUND Red blood cell (RBC) storage lesions and RBCs from females transfused into male recipients may have adverse effects on transfusion recipients' survival. We hypothesized that the effect of donor sex and the effect of age of blood on mortality would be most apparent in cardiac surgery patients. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS Using data from French Blood Services and two university hospitals, we conducted a retrospective cohort study on cardiac surgery patients whose first transfusion occurred between 2007 and 2011. The age of blood and donor sex effects on 1-year survival were studied using Cox regression modeling, with time-dependent stratification on the number of RBCs and adjustments …
Evolution of Corneal Graft Survival Over a 30-Year Period and Comparison of Surgical Techniques: A Cohort Study.
Purpose To compare graft survival between 3 10-year periods and according to surgical techniques performed in the last years. Design Cohort study. Methods setting: Regional center (Besancon University Hospital, France). patients: All 1132 patients operated on between 1983 and 2014. Graft and patient baseline characteristics, risk factors for failure, surgical procedures, and postoperative corneal status were collected. main outcome measures: Five-year survival rate in the whole cohort; 1-year and 3-year survival rates, respectively, among 88 patients with endothelial dystrophy (ED) or postoperative bullous keratopathy (PBK) operated on using endothelial lamellar keratoplasty (ELK) or penetr…
Estimation of National Colorectal-Cancer Incidence Using Claims Databases
Background. The aim of the study was to assess the accuracy of the colorectal-cancer incidence estimated from administrative data.Methods.We selected potential incident colorectal-cancer cases in 2004-2005 French administrative data, using two alternative algorithms. The first was based only on diagnostic and procedure codes, whereas the second considered the past history of the patient. Results of both methods were assessed against two corresponding local cancer registries, acting as “gold standards.” We then constructed a multivariable regression model to estimate the corrected total number of incident colorectal-cancer cases from the whole national administrative database.Results.The firs…
The prognosis of patients having received optimal therapy for nonvariceal upper gastrointestinal bleeding might be worse in daily practice than in randomized clinical trials.
International audience; BACKGROUND: Combination of endoscopic haemostatic and high-dose intravenous proton-pump inhibitors is considered to be the standard care for patients with acute peptic ulcer bleeding. AIM: This study assessed predictive factors of rebleeding and death in unselected patients presented to our hospital. METHODS: Consecutive patients with nonmalignant bleeding ulcers and stigmata of recent haemorrhage who received optimal treatment, between 22 August 2003 and 15 October 2007, were studied retrospectively. RESULTS: Among 140 included patients, 45 (32%) rebled and 30 received another haemostatic endoscopy, which was successful in 20 cases. In multivariate analysis, the onl…
