Transmediating argumentation : Students composing across written essays and digital videos in higher education

This comparative study examined how university students built an argument in written essays and multimodal digital videos, and how their argumentation transmediated across these two mediums. Data analysis involved 1) analysis of content in both written essays and digital videos; 2) the development of transmediation visualizations to elucidate how ideas were transformed from essays into videos; and 3) multimodal analysis to understand the communicative affordances and constrains for argumentation with each medium. Measuring and Supporting Pre-Service Teachers’ Self-Efficacy Towards Computers, Teaching, and Technology Integration

This paper reports on two studies designed to examine pre-service teachers’ self-efficacy beliefs. Study I investigated the measurement properties of a self-efficacy beliefs questionnaire comprising scales for computer self-efficacy, teacher self-efficacy, and self-efficacy towards technology integration. In Study I, 200 pre-service teachers completed the self-efficacy questionnaire. Confirmatory factor analyses resulted in a modified measurement model consisting of the three hypothesized self-efficacy scales. Student teachers of the University of Turku in Finland were encouraged to implement the service as part of their free time reading. This paper introduces a university course in which digital video composing was used as a study method. The aim of the course was to empower future teachers to use digital and multimodal literacy practices in their own teaching. Students in education, 13 in total, participated in the course on digital literacies. The course achievement was measured with the task in which students composed a video in small-groups. Ilmiölähtöistä matematiikan oppimista tuetaan ja edistetään sellaisten ongelmanratkaisutehtävien avulla, joissa oppilaat saavat itse suunnitella ratkaisuaan ja tehdä sitä koskevia valintoja. Matemaattista ongelmanratkaisua voidaan tukea eri tavoin, kuten taiteen avulla. Koulujen kirjavalikoimat osana kielitietoista kirjallisuuskasvatusta

Tässä tutkimuksessa selvitettiin suomalaisten koulujen kirjavalikoimien monikielisyyttä sekä opettajien kokemuksia koulujensa luokka- ja koulukirjastojen laadusta. Kyselyyn vastasi ala- ja yläkoulujen opettajia ympäri Suomea (N = 83). Opettajat olivat koulukirjastoihin enemmän tyytyväisiä kuin luokkakirjastoihin: puolet alakoulun opettajista ja yli puolet yläkoulun opettajista oli tyytyväisiä koulukirjastoonsa. Opettajat, jotka pitivät koulu- tai luokkakirjastoaan hyvinä, kokivat, että heidän koulussaan arvostettiin kirjallisuutta ja lukemista. This article examines L1 literacy practices and use of L1 from the perspective of students and teachers with migrant background. We focus particularly on the meaning making of literacy practices and use of L1 in both in-school and out-of-school contexts. The data consist of 13 teacher interviews and 10 student interviews and applied tasks completed by the students studying in a comprehensive school. Mathematics Learning through Arts and Collaborative Problem-Solving : The Princess and the Diamond-Problem

In this paper, we examine a mathematics education course which focused on collaborative mathematical problem solving in art topics. The students of the course were Finnish primary school pre-service teachers. During the course students investigated tessellations, reflected on their experiences and designed workshops for pupils. The course meetings were video recorded. Students’ work contained elements of mathematical problem solving and gave them experiences of working collaboratively. As teachers’ self-efficacy has been shown to be a crucial factor in technology integration, there is a need to understand the mechanisms that may raise teachers’ self-efficacy toward technology integration. This article seeks to understand what sources of self-efficacy hands-on experiences with technology may provide to pre-service teachers.
