ESE. Estudios sobre educación

2018

Mapping Protective Performance of Social Network Types on Health and Quality of Life in Older People in European Regions.

2022

Objectives: To identify social network profiles using Latent Profile Analysis (LPA), to study the relationships of these profiles with health markers, mental health, quality of life, and cognitive functioning, and to compare profiles across European regions. Methods: 27,272 participants from the Wave 8 of the SHARE project, aged 65 or older (M = 74.95, SD = 7.17) from Europe. Statistical analyses included LPAs followed by MANOVAs to compare the profiles and the health markers. Results: Five profiles were identified: family, friends, spouse, diverse, and others. A no network group was also added. The prevalence of the specific profiles differed across European regions. Individuals with no n…

Explorations of familiarity produced by words with specific combinations of letters

2010

We explore familiarity-based recognition using a paradigm devised by Parkin et al. (2001). The task consists of the creation of two lists of words written with one of two different subsets of letters of the alphabet. We manipulated study time (50, 100, 200, 500 ms per word) of words with different letter probabilistic structure to those originally used by Parkin et al. Letter-based familiarity responding was robust and present even at rates producing otherwise chance performance. A second experi- ment and structural equation modelling led us to interpret the results from the point of view of a theory that takes into account the processing of similarities and differences (Hunt & MacDaniel, (…

Factores predictores del compromiso docente en escuelas públicas peruanas: un modelo estructural

2016

Teachers´ engagement in change processes is closely related to their attitudes and views on education. Therefore, any successful educational change demands that teachers reevaluate their profession, as personal and professional factors are clearly relevant. The goal of this study is to test a predictive statistical model of teacher´s engagement in educational change considering personality factors and self-evaluation. The random and representative sample of Peruvian teachers comprised of 888 subjects. Results show good model fit and a strong predictive power on educational changes. The study confirms that personality and selfconcept are strong predictors on teacher´s engagement with educati…

Cognitive and personality variables as predictors of sexism against women in Spanish adolescents

2022

Previous research on the antecedents of sexism against women have not considered simultaneously the effects of sex, personality, and cognitive variables (need for closure and critical thinking disposition) in relation to sexism. We evaluated whether in adolescence, these indicators could predict sexist attitudes towards women using structural models. The sample comprised 709 Spanish high-school students (mean age = 16.79). 51.5% were female. Sex (being male), need for closure and critical thinking were the most relevant predictors of sexism. The disposition to think critically is as relevant as the motivational dimension of cognition (need for closure) to predict sexism. Multi-group struct…

Method Effects Associated to Item Valence: Evidence From the 10-Item Big-Five Inventory in Older Adults.

2022

The objective of this study is to analyze the factor structure of the BFI-10 considering item valence effects when applied to measure older adults. Likewise, this study aims to estimate the factorial structure, internal consistency of the scale, to assess the nomological validity, and the association of the Big Five traits with age. 75,078 participants with mean age of 68.27 from the 7th Wave of the SHARE study were included. Confirmatory Factor Analyses, omega coefficients and Pearson correlations were estimated. The best-fit model identified a five-factor structure with two valence effects, internal consistency ranged from .26 to .64, the nomological network showed that loneliness is neg…

Motives to practice exercise in old age and successful aging: A latent class analysis.

2018

Abstract Purpose The aim was to classify motives for exercising trying to find sets of related cases that share common motivations, and to relate these latent classes to markers of successful aging. Methods 725 old adult aged 55 to 97 years were sampled in several Spanish towns. Instruments: Successful Aging Inventory (SAI), International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), Health Survey SF-8, Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS), and motives to practice exercise, were used. Latent Class Analyses (LCAs) were estimated. The classes obtained were compared on markers of successful aging. Results Three latent classes were deemed optimal. Significant differences for several markers of success…

Perceived Social Support, School Engagement and Satisfaction with School

2017

Abstract There is evidence that social support from families, peers and teachers has an influence on student engagement, academic success, and satisfaction with school. The aim of this work is to use structural equations to analyze the effects of the perceived academic support and the school engagement on the satisfaction with school. A battery of measurement tools was administered to 2028 Angolan students aged between 14 and 22 years (mean = 17.4; SD  = 2.3). The results show the influence of the perceived academic support of teachers, family, and peers on the satisfaction with school using the school engagement as mediating variable. The perception of peer support does not show a predicti…

Motivational Class Climate, Motivation and Academic Success in University Students

2018

Abstract The aim of this study is to predict academic success based on the motivational class climate, mediated by the university students’ motivation. The participants are 758 university students from the Dominican Republic, aged between 18 and 50 years (21.1% men and 78.9% women). A battery of instruments was administered to measure the indicated variables and a full structural equations model was applied to predict academic success. The results highlight the direct effect of student perceptions of autonomy support on their satisfaction with the educational center, and the effect of satisfying basic psychological needs, both on satisfaction with the center and on academic performance. Per…

Psychometric properties of the EURO-D scale of depressive symptomatology: Evidence from SHARE wave 8

2022

Background The EURO-D is a short scale to measure symptoms of depression, very used in large population surveys. Although there are numerous validation studies, its psychometric properties remain unclear. The two-factor structure (Affective Suffering and Lack of Motivation) is replicated in several studies but with different item compositions, and none reported reliability indices for both factors. For that reason, the aim of this study is to examine the factorial validity of the scale, the reliability of the dimensions, the gender differential item functioning (DIF), and the nomological validity. Methods 46,317 participants aged 50 and over (M = 71.33), from which 57.4 % were females, in W…
