Measurement of Compton scattering at MAMI for the extraction of the electric and magnetic polarizabilities of the proton
A precise measurement of the differential cross-sections $d\sigma/d\Omega$ and the linearly polarized photon beam asymmetry $\Sigma_3$ for Compton scattering on the proton below pion threshold has been performed with a tagged photon beam and almost $4\pi$ detector at the Mainz Microtron. The incident photons were produced by the recently upgraded Glasgow-Mainz photon tagging facility and impinged on a cryogenic liquid hydrogen target, with the scattered photons detected in the Crystal Ball/TAPS set-up. Using the highest statistics Compton scattering data ever measured on the proton along with two effective field theories (both covariant baryon and heavy-baryon) and one fixed-$t$ dispersion …
(γ,2N) reaction inC12
The $^{12}$C(\ensuremath{\gamma},pn) and $^{12}$C(\ensuremath{\gamma},pp) reactions have been measured for photon energies between 80 and 157 MeV using a photon tagging spectrometer and plastic scintillator detectors. The overall energy resolution was \ensuremath{\sim}7 MeV, sufficient to determine the initial shells of the emitted nucleons. Corrections were made for solid angle and threshold effects by means of Monte Carlo simulations. For the (\ensuremath{\gamma},pn) reaction both the missing energy and recoil momentum distributions are largely consistent with a two-nucleon absorption process on p-shell an sp nucleon pairs. For the much smaller $^{12}$C(\ensuremath{\gamma},pp) cross secti…
Double pi(0) photoproduction off the proton at threshold
The reaction $\gamma p \to \pi^0 \pi^0 p$ has been measured using the TAPS BaF$_2$ calorimeter at the tagged photon facility of the Mainz Microtron accelerator. Chiral perturbation theory (ChPT) predicts that close to threshold this channel is significantly enhanced compared to double pion final states with charged pions. In contrast to other reaction channels, the lower order tree terms are strongly suppressed in 2$\pi^0$ photoproduction. The consequence is the dominance of pion loops in the 2$\pi^0$ channel close to threshold - a result that opens new prospects for the test of ChPT and in particular its inherent loop terms. The present measurement is the first which is sensitive enough fo…
Helicity-dependent cross sections for the photoproduction of π0 pairs from nucleons
The double-polarization observable $E$ and helicity-dependent cross sections $\sigma_{1/2}$, $\sigma_{3/2}$ have been measured for the photoproduction of $\pi^0$ pairs off quasi-free protons and neutrons at the Mainz MAMI accelerator with the Crystal Ball/TAPS setup. A circularly polarized photon beam was produced by bremsstrahlung from longitudinally polarized electrons and impinged on a longitudinally polarized deuterated butanol target. The reaction products were detected with an almost $4\pi$ covering calorimeter. The results reveal for the first time the helicity- and isospin-dependent structure of the $\gamma N\rightarrow N\pi^0\pi^0$ reaction. They are compared to predictions from re…
Determination of theE2/M1ratio in theγN→Δ(1232)transition from a simultaneous measurement ofp(γ→,p)π0andp(γ→,π+)n
Tagged linearly polarized photons have been used at the Mainz Microtron (MAMI) for simultaneous measurements of the $p(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\ensuremath{\gamma}},p){\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}$ and $p(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\ensuremath{\gamma}},{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+})n$ reaction channels to study the $\ensuremath{\gamma}\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{N}\ensuremath{\Delta}(1232)$ transition. The energy dependence of the magnetic dipole ${M}_{1+}^{3/2}$ and electric quadrupole ${E}_{1+}^{3/2}$ amplitudes have been extracted from these data in the photon energy range from $270$ to 420 MeV. The $E2/M1$ ratio for the $\ensuremath{\gamma}\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow…
New determination of theηtransition form factor in the Dalitz decayη→e+e−γwith the Crystal Ball/TAPS detectors at the Mainz Microtron
The Dalitz decay eta -> e(+) e(-) gamma has been measured in the gamma p -> eta p reaction with the Crystal Ball and TAPS multiphoton spectrometers, together with the photon-tagging facility at the Mainz Microtron MAMI. The experimental statistic used in this work is one order of magnitude greater than in any previous measurement of eta -> e(+) e(-) gamma. The value obtained for the slope parameter Lambda(-2) of the eta transition form factor, Lambda(-2) = (1.95 +/- 0.15(stat) +/- 0.10(syst)) GeV-2, is in good agreement with recent measurements conducted in eta -> e(+) e(-) gamma and eta -> mu(+) mu(-) gamma decays, as well as with recent form-factor calculations. The uncertainty obtained i…
Study of three-nucleon mechanisms in the photodisintegration of 3He
Abstract The cross section of the 3He(γ,pp)n reaction has been measured for the first time over a wide photon energy and proton angular range (200 MeV ≤ Eγ ≤ 800 MeV; 20° ≤ ϑplab ≤ 160°) using the large acceptance detector DAPHNE at the tagged photon facility of the MAMI microtron in Mainz. The wide kinematical coverage of the measurement has allowed a detailed analysis of three-nucleon absorption mechanisms. A model developed by Laget explains the main characteristics of the data in the Δ resonance region.
Threshold π0 photoproduction on transverse polarised protons at MAMI
Abstract Polarisation-dependent differential cross sections σ T associated with the target asymmetry T have been measured for the reaction γ p → → p π 0 with transverse target polarisation from π 0 threshold to photon energies of 190 MeV. The data were obtained using a frozen-spin butanol target with the Crystal Ball / TAPS detector set-up and the Glasgow photon tagging system at the Mainz Microtron MAMI. Results for σ T have been used in combination with our previous measurements of the unpolarised cross section σ 0 and the beam asymmetry Σ for a model-independent determination of S- and P-wave multipoles in the π 0 threshold region, which includes for the first time a direct determination…
Double pion photoproduction off nuclei - Are there effects beyond final-state interaction?
Photoproduction of $\pi^{0}\pi^{0}$ and $\pi^{0}\pi^{\pm}$ pairs from nuclei has been measured over a wide mass range ($^2$H, $^{7}$Li, $^{12}$C, $^{40}$Ca, and $^{\rm nat}$Pb) for photon energies from threshold to 600 MeV. The experiments were performed at the MAMI accelerator in Mainz, using the Glasgow photon tagging spectrometer and a 4$\pi$ electromagnetic calorimeter consisting of the Crystal Ball and TAPS detectors. A shift of the pion-pion invariant mass spectra for heavy nuclei to small invariant masses has been observed for $\pi^0$ pairs but also for the mixed-charge pairs. The precise results allow for the first time a model-independent analysis of the influence of pion final-sta…
Accurate Test of Chiral Dynamics in the \boldmath$\vec{\gamma} p \rightarrow \pi^0p$ Reaction
A precision measurement of the differential cross sections $d\sigma/d\Omega$ and the linearly polarized photon asymmetry $\Sigma \equiv (d\sigma_\perp - d\sigma_\parallel) \slash (d\sigma_\perp + d\sigma_\parallel)$ for the $\vec{\gamma} p \rightarrow \pi^0p$ reaction in the near-threshold region has been performed with a tagged photon beam and almost $4\pi$ detector at the Mainz Microtron. The Glasgow-Mainz photon tagging facility along with the Crystal Ball/TAPS multi-photon detector system and a cryogenic liquid hydrogen target were used. These data allowed for a precise determination of the energy dependence of the real parts of the $S$- and all three $P$-wave amplitudes for the first t…
C(,pn) photon asymmetry for Eγ=180–340 MeV
The photon asymmetry (Σ) of the 12C(,pn) reaction has been measured using linearly polarised tagged photons at the Mainz microtron MAMI for Eγ=180–340 MeV. The data have been analysed in separate missing energy (Em) regions corresponding to the ejection of nucleons from (1p)2 and (1p)(1s) shells. The measured Σ values for both Em regions are smaller in magnitude than corresponding 2H data, but the (1p)2 results have a similar Eγ dependence. Calculations of direct two-nucleon emission overestimate the magnitude of Σ at all photon energies.
Decay pion spectroscopy: a new approach
We propose a new experiment for decay pion spectroscopy of light hypernuclei at electron- and proton-beam facilities, using the recoil distance technique for separation of produced hypernuclei and a magnetic spectrometer for precise measurement of the decay pion momentum. Low-pressure MWPCs are advocated for low-energy recoil detection as they provide position and time information and are highly insensitive to gamma-ray and electron background. The position and timing characteristics of such a recoil detector were studied using ~5 MeV {\alpha}-particles. By using the present proposed approach the rate of the detected hypernuclei can be increased by one-to-two orders of magnitude compared to…
Dependence of the C12(γ→,pd) reaction on photon linear polarisation
Abstract The sensitivity of the C 12 ( γ → , pd ) reaction to photon linear polarisation has been determined at MAMI, giving the first measurement of the reaction for a nucleus heavier than 3He. Photon asymmetries and cross sections were measured for E γ = 170 to 350 MeV. For E γ below the Δ resonance, reactions leaving the residual 9Be near its ground state show a positive asymmetry of up to 0.3, similar to that observed for 3He suggesting a similar reaction mechanism for the two nuclei.
Deuteron photodisintegration by polarized photons in the region of the $d^*(2380)$
We report the first large-acceptance measurement of the beam–spin asymmetry for deuteron photodisintegration (γ→d→pn) in the photon energy range 420<Eγ<620MeV. The measurement provides important new constraints on the mechanisms of photodisintegration above the Δ resonance and on the photocoupling of the recently discovered d⁎(2380) hexaquark.
Quasifreeπ+production studied using theC12(γ, π+n)B11reaction in theΔ(1232)resonance region
Results are presented from a coincidence study of the {sup 12}C({gamma},{pi}{sup +}{ital n}){sup 11}B quasifree pion production reaction made in the {Delta}-resonance region using tagged photons. Cross sections for reactions originating on 1{ital p}-shell protons are found to be significantly larger than predicted by calculations based on quasifree pion production. It is suggested that more sophisticated calculations, perhaps including medium effects, may be required to reproduce the data. {copyright} {ital 1996 The American Physical Society.}
New results on the Roper resonance and the P_{11} partial wave
Properties of the Roper resonance, the first scalar excitation of the nucleon, are determined. Pole positions and residues of the $P_{11}$ partial wave are studied in a combined analysis of pion- and photo-induced reactions. We find the Roper pole at $\{(1371\pm7)-i(92\pm10)\}$ MeV and an elasticity of $0.61\pm 0.03$. The largest decay coupling is found for the $N\sigma$ ($\sigma=(\pi\pi)$-$S$-wave). The analysis is based on new data on $\gamma p\to p\pi^0\pi^0$ for photons in the energy range from the two-pion threshold to 820 MeV from TAPS at Mainz and from 0.4 to 1.3 GeV from Crystal Barrel at Bonn and includes further data from other experiments. The partial wave analysis excludes the p…
Coherent photoproduction of η-mesons off 3He – search for η-mesic nuclei
Coherent photoproduction of $\eta$-mesons off $^3$He, i.e. the reaction $\gamma ^3{He}\rightarrow \eta ^3{He}$, has been investigated in the near-threshold region. The experiment was performed at the Glasgow tagged photon facility of the Mainz MAMI accelerator with the combined Crystal Ball - TAPS detector. Angular distributions and the total cross section were measured using the $\eta\rightarrow \gamma\gamma$ and $\eta\rightarrow 3\pi^0\rightarrow 6\gamma$ decay channels. The observed extremely sharp rise of the cross section at threshold and the behavior of the angular distributions are evidence for a strong $\eta {^3{He}}$ final state interaction, pointing to the existence of a resonant …
Photoproduction of $\eta$ $\pi$ pairs off nucleons and deuterons
Quasi-free photoproduction of $\pi\eta$-pairs has been investigated from threshold up to incident photon energies of 1.4 GeV, respectively up to photon-nucleon invariant masses up to 1.9 GeV. Total cross sections, angular distributions, invariant-mass distributions of the $\pi\eta$ and meson-nucleon pairs, and beam-helicity asymmetries have been measured for the reactions $\gamma p\rightarrow p\pi^0\eta$, $\gamma n\rightarrow n\pi^0\eta$, $\gamma p\rightarrow n\pi^+\eta$, and $\gamma n\rightarrow p\pi^-\eta$ from nucleons bound inside the deuteron. For the $\gamma p$ initial state data for free protons have also been analyzed. Finally, the total cross sections for quasi-free production of $…
Measurement of theγp→K0Σ+reaction with the Crystal Ball/TAPS detectors at the Mainz Microtron
The gamma p -> K-0 Sigma(+) reaction has been measured from threshold to E-gamma = 1.45 GeV (W-CM = 1.9 GeV) using the Crystal Ball and TAPS multiphoton spectrometers together with the photon tagging facility at the Mainz Microtron MAMI. In the present experiment, this reaction was searched for in the 3 pi(0)p final state, by assuming K-S(0) -> pi(0)pi(0) and Sigma(+) -> pi(0)p. The experimental results include total and differential cross sections as well as the polarization of the recoil hyperon. The new data significantly improve empirical knowledge about the gamma p -> K-0 Sigma(+) reaction in the measured energy range. The results are compared to previous measurements and model predict…
Investigation of multiparticle final states in12C photoreactions
The ${}^{12}\mathrm{C}(\ensuremath{\gamma},pn)$, ${}^{12}\mathrm{C}(\ensuremath{\gamma},pp)$, ${}^{12}\mathrm{C}(\ensuremath{\gamma},ppp)$, ${}^{12}\mathrm{C}(\ensuremath{\gamma},pp{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}})$, ${}^{12}\mathrm{C}(\ensuremath{\gamma},p{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}})$ reactions have been studied using tagged photons of energy ${E}_{\ensuremath{\gamma}}=250$--600 MeV. A model which includes all major absorption mechanisms and final state interactions gives results that agree well with the shapes of missing energy spectra, but for some channels the predicted cross sections are too large.
The isospin structure of photoproduction of πη pairs from the nucleon in the threshold region
Abstract Photoproduction of πη-pairs from nucleons has been investigated from threshold up to incident photon energies of ≈ 1.4 GeV. The quasi-free reactions γ p → p π 0 η , γ n → n π 0 η , γ p → n π + η , and γ n → p π − η were for the first time measured from nucleons bound in the deuteron. The corresponding reactions from a free-proton target were also studied to investigate final-state interaction effects (for neutral pions the free-proton results could be compared to previous measurements; the γ p → n π + η reaction was measured for the first time). For the π 0 η final state coherent production via the γ d → d π 0 η reaction was also investigated. The experiments were performed at the …
The 16O(γ, 2N) reaction measured with tagged photons
The results of tagged-photon measurements of the 4He(γ, pn)d, 4He(γ, pn)pn and 4He(γ, pp)nn reactions, carried out with photons of energies 80–131 MeV, are presented. The (γ, pn)d three-body-breakup cross section dominates the four-body-breakup cross section. The three-body-breakup cross section and the corresponding deuteron recoil-momentum spectrum are reasonably accounted for by a mechanism of photon absorption on correlated proton-neutron pairs. In contrast the four-body-breakup mechanism appears to have two components: absorption on correlated proton-neutron pairs and a more complex additional component which has a distribution similar to phase space. The data rule out substantial phot…
Insight into the Narrow Structure in η Photoproduction on the Neutron from Helicity-Dependent Cross Sections
The double polarization observable E and the helicity dependent cross sections σ1=2 and σ3=2 were measured for η photoproduction from quasifree protons and neutrons. The circularly polarized tagged photon beam of the A2 experiment at the Mainz MAMI accelerator was used in combination with a longitudinally polarized deuterated butanol target. The almost 4π detector setup of the Crystal Ball and TAPS is ideally suited to detect the recoil nucleons and the decay photons from η → 2γ and η → 3π0. The results show that the narrow structure previously observed in η photoproduction from the neutron is only apparent in σ1=2 and hence, most likely related to a spin-1=2 amplitude. Nucleon resonances t…
Single π0 production off neutrons bound in deuteron with linearly polarized photons
The quasifree γ→d→π0n(p) photon beam asymmetry, Σ, has been measured at photon energies, Eγ, from 390 to 610 MeV, corresponding to center of mass energy from 1.271 to 1.424 GeV, for the first time. The data were collected in the A2 hall of the MAMI electron beam facility with the Crystal Ball and TAPS calorimeters covering pion center-of-mass angles from 49∘ to 148∘. In this kinematic region, polarization observables are sensitive to contributions from the Δ(1232) and N(1440) resonances. The extracted values of Σ have been compared to predictions based on partial-wave analyses (PWAs) of the existing pion photoproduction database. Our comparison includes the SAID, MAID and Bonn–Gatchina anal…
Neutron Skin ofPb208from Coherent Pion Photoproduction
Information on the size and shape of the neutron skin on (208)Pb is extracted from coherent pion photoproduction cross sections measured using the Crystal Ball detector together with the Glasgow tagger at the MAMI electron beam facility. On exploitation of an interpolated fit of a theoretical model to the measured cross sections, the half-height radius and diffuseness of the neutron distribution are found to be c(n)=6.70±0.03(stat.) fm and a(n)=0.55±0.01(stat.)(-0.03)(+0.02)(sys.) fm, respectively, corresponding to a neutron skin thickness Δr(np)=0.15±0.03(stat.)(-0.03)(+0.01)(sys.) fm. The results give the first successful extraction of a neutron skin thickness with an electromagnetic p…
Measurement of the $^{1}H$($\vec{\gamma}$, $\vec{p}$)$\pi^{0}$ reaction using a novel nucleon spin polarimeter
We report the first large-acceptance measurement of polarization transfer from a polarized photon beam to a recoiling nucleon, pioneering a novel polarimetry technique with wide application to future nuclear and hadronic physics experiments. The commissioning measurement of polarization transfer in the $^{1}H$($\vec{\gamma}$,$\vec{p}$)$\pi^{0}$ reaction in the range $0.4<E_{\gamma}<1.4$ GeV is highly selective regarding the basic parameterizations used in partial wave analyses to extract the nucleon excitation spectrum. The new data strongly favor the recently proposed Chew-Mandelstam formalism.
Total photoabsorption cross sections forH1,H2, andHe3from 200 to 800 MeV
The total photoabsorption cross sections for $^{1}\mathrm{H}$, $^{2}\mathrm{H}$, and $^{3}\mathrm{He}$ have been measured for incident photon energies ranging from 200 to 800 MeV. The $^{3}\mathrm{He}$ data are the first for this nucleus. By using the large acceptance detector DAPHNE in conjunction with the tagged photon beam facility of the MAMI accelerator in Mainz, cross sections of high precision have been obtained. The results show clearly the changes in the nucleon resonances in going from $^{1}\mathrm{H}$ to $^{3}\mathrm{He}$. In particular, for the ${\mathit{D}}_{13}$ region the behavior for $^{3}\mathrm{He}$ is intermediate between that for $^{1}\mathrm{H}$, $^{2}\mathrm{H}$, and h…
The angular distribution of the 12C(γ,pn) reaction for Eγ=120−150 MeV
The angular distribution of nucleons emitted in the 12C(γ,pn) reaction has been measured using tagged photons at the Mainz microtron MAMI. The variation of the reaction strength with the polar angles of the two emitted nucleons is reported for Eγ=120−150 MeV. The proton angular distribution peaks at more backward angles than the 2H(γ,p) differential cross section indicating a departure from the simple quasi-deuteron model of 2N photo-emission. The distribution shape is in reasonable agreement with microscopic theoretical models which include both π- and ρ-exchange.
First measurement of the polarisation transfer on the proton in the reactions $$H(\vec e,e'\vec p)$$ and $$D(\vec e,e'\vec p)$$
The measurement of the polarisation transfer to the proton in the reactions\(H(\vec e,e'\vec p)\) and\(D(\vec e,e'\vec p)\) performed with longitudinally polarised electrons in quasi-free kinematics is presented. The coincidence measurement was executed atQ2≈8fm−2 using the 855 MeV, c.w. beam of the Mainz Microtron MAMI. The recoil polarisation was determined by means of a carbon analyser. The experiment shows that the binding of the nucleon does not modify the polarisationPx of the recoil proton within an error ofΔPx/Px≈10%. The measured polarisation agrees with recent theoretical predictions. Implications for the measurement of the electric form factor of the neutron using the\(D(\vec e,e…
Determination of the η-transition form factor in the γp→pη→pγe+e− reaction
The Dalitz decay η→γe+e− has been measured using the combined Crystal Ball and TAPS photon detector setup at the electron accelerator MAMI-C. Compared to the most recent transition form-factor measurement in the e+e− channel, statistics have been improved by one order of magnitude. The e+e− invariant mass distribution shows a deviation from the QED prediction for a point-like particle, which can be described by a form-factor. Using the usual monopole transition form-factor parameterization, F(m2)=(1−m2/Λ2)−1, a value of Λ−2=(1.92±0.35(stat)±0.13(syst)) GeV−2 has been determined. This value is in good agreement with a recent measurement of the η Dalitz decay in the μ+μ− channel and with rece…
Study of $\eta$ and $\eta'$ photoproduction at MAMI
The reactions $\gamma p\to \eta p$ and $\gamma p\to \eta' p$ have been measured from their thresholds up to the center-of-mass energy $W=1.96$GeV with the tagged-photon facilities at the Mainz Microtron, MAMI. Differential cross sections were obtained with unprecedented accuracy, providing fine energy binning and full production-angle coverage. A strong cusp is observed in the total cross section and excitation functions for $\eta$ photoproduction at the energies in vicinity of the $\eta'$ threshold, $W=1896$MeV ($E_\gamma=1447$MeV). This behavior is explained in a revised $\eta$MAID isobar model by a significant branching of the $N(1895)1/2^-$ nucleon resonance to both, $\eta p$ and $\eta'…
Beam-Helicity Asymmetries in Double-Pion Photoproduction off the Proton
Beam-helicity asymmetries have been measured at the MAMI accelerator in Mainz in the three isospin channels $\vec{\gamma}p\to \pi^{+}\pi^0n$, $\vec{\gamma}p\to \pi^{0}\pi^0p$ and $\vec{\gamma}p\to \pi^{+}\pi^{-}p$ . The circularly polarized photons, produced from bremsstrahlung of longitudinally polarized electrons, were tagged with the Glasgow magnetic spectrometer. Charged pions and the decay photons of $\pi^0$ mesons were detected in a $~4\pi$ electromagnetic calorimeter which combined the Crystal Ball detector with the TAPS detector. The precisely measured asymmetries are very sensitive to details of the production processes and are thus key observables in the modeling of the reaction d…
First measurement of the polarization observable E and helicity-dependent cross sections in single π 0 photoproduction from quasi-free nucleons
The double-polarization observable $E$ and the helicity-dependent cross sections $\sigma_{1/2}$ and $\sigma_{3/2}$ have been measured for the first time for single $\pi^{0}$ photoproduction from protons and neutrons bound in the deuteron at the electron accelerator facility MAMI in Mainz, Germany. The experiment used a circularly polarized photon beam and a longitudinally polarized deuterated butanol target. The reaction products, recoil nucleons and decay photons from the $\pi^0$ meson were detected with the Crystal Ball and TAPS electromagnetic calorimeters. Effects from nuclear Fermi motion were removed by a kinematic reconstruction of the $\pi^{0}N$ final state. A comparison to data mea…
Insight into the narrow structure in {\boldmath{$\eta$}}-photoproduction on the neutron from helicity dependent cross sections
The double polarization observable $E$ and the helicity dependent cross sections $\sigma_{1/2}$ and $\sigma_{3/2}$ were measured for $\eta$ photoproduction from quasi-free protons and neutrons. The circularly polarized tagged photon beam of the A2 experiment at the Mainz MAMI accelerator was used in combination with a longitudinally polarized deuterated butanol target. The almost $4\pi$ detector setup of the Crystal Ball and TAPS is ideally suited to detect the recoil nucleons and the decay photons from $\eta\rightarrow 2\gamma$ and $\eta\rightarrow 3\pi^0$. The results show that the narrow structure previously observed in $\eta$ photoproduction from the neutron is only apparent in $\sigma_…
Photoproduction of π 0 mesons off protons and neutrons in the second and third nucleon resonance regions
Photoproduction of mesons off quasi-free nucleons bound in the deuteron allows to study the electromagnetic excitation spectrum of the neutron and the isospin structure of the excitation of nucleon resonances. The database for such reactions is much more sparse than for free proton targets. Single $\pi^0$ photoproduction off quasi-free nucleons from the deuteron was experimentally studied. Nuclear effects were investigated by a comparison of the results for free protons and quasi-free protons and used as a correction for the quasi-free neutron data. The experiment was performed at the tagged photon beam of the Mainz MAMI accelerator for photon energies between 0.45~GeV and 1.4~GeV, using an…
Accurate Test of Chiral Dynamics in theγ→p→π0pReaction
A precision measurement of the differential cross sections dσ/dΩ and the linearly polarized photon asymmetry Σ≡(dσ⊥-dσ∥)/(dσ⊥+dσ∥) for the γp→π0p reaction in the near-threshold region has been performed with a tagged photon beam and almost 4π detector at the Mainz Microtron. The Glasgow-Mainz photon tagging facility along with the Crystal Ball/TAPS multiphoton detector system and a cryogenic liquid hydrogen target were used. These data allowed for a precise determination of the energy dependence of the real parts of the S- and all three P-wave amplitudes for the first time and provide the most stringent test to date of the predictions of chiral perturbation theory and its energy region of a…
Measurement of the beam-helicity asymmetry in photoproduction of π0η pairs on carbon, aluminum, and lead
The beam-helicity asymmetry was measured, for the first time, in photoproduction of $\pi^{0}\eta$ pairs on carbon, aluminum, and lead, with the A2 experimental setup at MAMI. The results are compared to an earlier measurement on a free proton and to the corresponding theoretical calculations. The Mainz model is used to predict the beam-helicity asymmetry for the nuclear targets. The present results indicate that the photoproduction mechanism for $\pi^{0}\eta$ pairs on nuclei is similar to photoproduction on a free nucleon. This process is dominated by the $D_{33}$ partial wave with the $\eta\Delta(1232)$ intermediate state.
Study of eta and eta' Photoproduction at MAMI
The reactions γp→ηp and γp→η′p are measured from their thresholds up to the center-of-mass energy W=1.96 GeV with the tagged-photon facilities at the Mainz Microtron, MAMI. Differential cross sections are obtained with unprecedented statistical accuracy, providing fine energy binning and full production-angle coverage. A strong cusp is observed in the total cross section for η photoproduction at the energies in the vicinity of the η′ threshold, W=1896 MeV (Eγ=1447 MeV). Within the framework of a revised ηMAID isobar model, the cusp, in connection with a steep rise of the η′ total cross section from its threshold, can only be explained by a strong coupling of the poorly known N(1895)1/2− sta…

Quasifree photoproduction of eta mesons off protons and neutrons
Differential and total cross sections for the quasifree reactions $\ensuremath{\gamma}p\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\eta}p$ and $\ensuremath{\gamma}n\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\eta}n$ have been determined at the MAMI-C electron accelerator by using a liquid deuterium target. Photons were produced via bremsstrahlung from the 1.5 GeV incident electron beam and energy tagged with the Glasgow photon tagger. Decay photons of the neutral decay modes $\ensuremath{\eta}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}2\ensuremath{\gamma}$ and $\ensuremath{\eta}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}3{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}6\ensuremath{\gamma}$ and coincident recoil nucleons were detected in a combin…
Proton photoproduction from 12C
Abstract The 12 C(γ,p) differential cross-section in the Δ-resonance region has been measured using tagged photons. Data are presented for 20 MeV wide photon energy bins at 200, 300, 400 and 500 MeV and for proton angles from 52° to 128°. The present 12 C(γ,p) measurements are compared with previous experiments carried out at Frascati, Tokyo and Bonn. Comparisons are also made with theoretical calculations developed at Gent and Valencia which provide an interpretation of the photon reaction mechanism in terms of the major contributing processes. Coincidence data with correlated neutrons, protons and pions are also presented.
Coherent and incoherent π0 photoproduction from the deuteron
Differential cross-sections for the reactions d(gamma,pi (o))d and d(gamma,pi (o))pn have been measured at MAMI with the TAPS detector setup in the energy range 140 MeV > E- > 306 MeV. By use of the Glasgow tagging spectrometer an 0.8 MeV energy resolution for photons incident on the target was achieved. The (o) missing energy resolution was sufficient for a reliable separation of coherent and incoherent channels. The data for the break-up channel exhibit very strong final state interaction effects, whereas the observed angular dependence of the inclusive process d(gamma, pi (o))X is in quantitative agreement with predictions for a quasi-free process. The observed absolute d(gamma, pi (o))X…
The12C(γ,NN)reaction studied over a wide kinematic range
The ${}^{12}\mathrm{C}(\ensuremath{\gamma},np)$ and ${}^{12}\mathrm{C}(\ensuremath{\gamma},pp)$ reactions have been studied using the Glasgow photon tagging spectrometer at the Mainz MAMI electron microtron for ${E}_{\ensuremath{\gamma}}=150--700$ MeV over a kinematic range which extends well beyond the approximately back-to-back detector arrangements of previous work. For ${}^{12}\mathrm{C}(\ensuremath{\gamma},np)$ the general trends of the missing energy distributions are reproduced over a wide range of kinematics and photon energies by the theory developed by the Valencia group. The corresponding ${}^{12}\mathrm{C}(\ensuremath{\gamma},pp)$ channel is overestimated by a factor of \ensurem…
Measurement of the beam-helicity asymmetry I⊙ in the photoproduction of π0-pairs off the proton and off the neutron
Abstract Beam-helicity asymmetries have been measured at the MAMI accelerator in Mainz for the photoproduction of neutral pion pairs in the reactions γ → p → p π 0 π 0 and γ → d → ( n ) p π 0 π 0 , γ → d → ( p ) n π 0 π 0 off free protons and off quasi-free nucleons bound in the deuteron for incident photon energies up to 1.4 GeV. Circularly polarized photons were produced from bremsstrahlung of longitudinally polarized electrons and tagged with the Glasgow magnetic spectrometer. Decay photons from the π 0 mesons, recoil protons, and recoil neutrons were detected in the 4π covering electromagnetic calorimeter composed of the Crystal Ball and TAPS detectors. After kinematic reconstruction of…
First measurement of the helicity dependence of 3He photoreactions in the Δ(1232) resonance region
The first measurement of the helicity dependence of the total inclusive 3He photo-absorption cross section and of the partial cross sections for several reaction channels was carried out at MAMI (Mainz) in the photon energy range between 150 and 500 MeV. The experiment used the large acceptance Crystal Ball spectrometer, complemented by charged particle and vertex detectors, a circularly polarised tagged photon beam and a longitudinally polarised high-pressure 3He gas target. The results obtained give information on the GDH integral on 3He and on the neutron and allow an investigation of the modifications of nucleon properties inside 3He.
K+Λ and K+Σ0 photoproduction with fine center-of-mass energy resolution
Measurements of γp→K+Λγp→K+Λ and γp→K+Σ0γp→K+Σ0 cross-sections have been obtained with the photon tagging facility and the Crystal Ball calorimeter at MAMI-C. The measurement uses a novel K+K+ meson identification technique in which the weak decay products are characterized using the energy and timing characteristics of the energy deposit in the calorimeter, a method that has the potential to be applied at many other facilities. The fine center-of-mass energy (W) resolution and statistical accuracy of the new data results in a significant impact on partial wave analyses aiming to better establish the excitation spectrum of the nucleon. The new analyses disfavor a strong role for quark–diqua…
TandFasymmetries inπ0photoproduction on the proton
The γp→π0p reaction was studied at laboratory photon energies from 425 to 1445 MeV with a transversely polarized target and a longitudinally polarized beam. The beam-target asymmetry F was measured for the first time and new high precision data for the target asymmetry T were obtained. The experiment was performed at the photon tagging facility of the Mainz Microtron (MAMI) using the Crystal Ball and TAPS photon spectrometers. The polarized cross sections were expanded in terms of associated Legendre functions and compared to recent predictions from several partial-wave analyses. The impact of the new data on our understanding of the underlying partial-wave amplitudes and baryon resonance c…
Helicity-dependent cross sections and double-polarization observable E in eta photoproduction from quasi-free protons and neutrons
Precise helicity-dependent cross sections and the double-polarization observable $E$ were measured for $\eta$ photoproduction from quasi-free protons and neutrons bound in the deuteron. The $\eta\rightarrow 2\gamma$ and $\eta\rightarrow 3\pi^0\rightarrow 6\gamma$ decay modes were used to optimize the statistical quality of the data and to estimate systematic uncertainties. The measurement used the A2 detector setup at the tagged photon beam of the electron accelerator MAMI in Mainz. A longitudinally polarized deuterated butanol target was used in combination with a circularly polarized photon beam from bremsstrahlung of a longitudinally polarized electron beam. The reaction products were de…
The Electric Formfactor of the Neutron Determined by Quasielastic Scattering of Longitudinally Polarized Electrons from 3He and 2D
The recent availability of polarized electron beams at electron accelerator laboratories adds another technique to probing the electromagnetic structure of nuclear matter [1]. The present paper discusses the application of polarized electron scattering to the determination of the electric formfactor of the neutron. Its value at medium energies is only poorly known hitherto. Electron scattering is dominated by interaction with the neutron magnetic moment. Therefore the contribution of the charge distribution to the scattering cross section is scarcely detectable in case of unpolarized collision partners. The elastic scattering of longitudinally polarized electrons from a polarized neutron ta…
12C(γ,π+n) and 12C(γ,π+p) reactions across the Δ resonance region
Abstract Differential cross-sections from (γ,π+n) and (γ,π+p) experiments on 12C are presented together with a microscopic model calculation. The comparison of experimental data with theory confirms that quasifree pion production is the dominant process for the (γ,π+n) reaction. The comparison of (γ,π+p) with (γ,π+n) data shows the importance of final state interactions. first time to experimentally study the strength and the possible mechanisms involved in the final state interaction.
Measurement of the transverse target and beam-target asymmetries in η meson photoproduction at MAMI
We present new data for the transverse target asymmetry T and the very first data for the beam-target asymmetry F in the $\vec \gamma \vec p\to\eta p$ reaction up to a center-of-mass energy of W=1.9 GeV. The data were obtained with the Crystal-Ball/TAPS detector setup at the Glasgow tagged photon facility of the Mainz Microtron MAMI. All existing model predictions fail to reproduce the new data indicating a significant impact on our understanding of the underlying dynamics of $\eta$ meson photoproduction. The peculiar nodal structure observed in existing T data close to threshold is not confirmed.
Study of η and η′ Photoproduction at MAMI
The reactions γp→ηp and γp→η′p are measured from their thresholds up to the center-of-mass energy W=1.96 GeV with the tagged-photon facilities at the Mainz Microtron, MAMI. Differential cross sections are obtained with unprecedented statistical accuracy, providing fine energy binning and full production-angle coverage. A strong cusp is observed in the total cross section for η photoproduction at the energies in the vicinity of the η′ threshold, W=1896 MeV (Eγ=1447 MeV). Within the framework of a revised ηMAID isobar model, the cusp, in connection with a steep rise of the η′ total cross section from its threshold, can only be explained by a strong coupling of the poorly known N(1895)1/2− …
Photoproduction of theωmeson on the proton near threshold
An experimental study of omega photoproduction on the proton was conducted by using the Crystal Ball and TAPS multiphoton spectrometers together with the photon tagging facility at the Mainz Microtron MAMI. The gamma p -> omega p differential cross sections are measured from threshold to the incident-photon energy E-gamma = 1.40 GeV (W = 1.87 GeV for the center-of-mass energy) with 15-MeV binning in E-gamma and full production-angle coverage. The quality of the present data near threshold gives access to a variety of interesting physics aspects. As an example, an estimation of the omega N scattering length alpha(omega p) is provided.
Nuclear pion photoproduction in theΔresonance region
A measurement of the /sup 12/C( gamma , pi /sup +/n)/sup 11/B reaction in quasifree pi -production kinematic regimes has been performed using tagged photons in conjunction with large solid angle pi and n detectors. The aim of the experiment was to investigate predicted modifications to the Delta excitation of nucleons and their subsequent propagation and decay, brought about by the nuclear medium. Differential cross sections are presented for photon energies spanning the Delta (1232) excitation region. The measurements are consistent with distorted wave impulse approximation calculations in which the amplitude for proton Delta excitation, followed by Delta propagation and decay to pi /sup +…
Measurement of the π0→e+e−γ Dalitz decay at the Mainz Microtron
The Dalitz decay π0→e+e−γ has been measured in the γp→π0p reaction with the A2 tagged-photon facility at the Mainz Microtron, MAMI. The value obtained for the slope parameter of the π0 electromagnetic transition form factor, aπ=0.030±0.010tot, is in agreement with existing measurements of this decay and with recent theoretical calculations. The uncertainty obtained in the value of aπ is lower than in previous results based on the π0→e+e−γ decay.
Delayed Pion Spectroscopy of Hypernuclei
New possibilities of hypernuclear studies at modern electron accelerators based on recently developed radio frequency photomultiplier tubes are discussed.
First measurement of target and beam-target asymmetries in theγp→π0ηpreaction
The first data on target and beam-target asymmetries for the gamma p -> pi(0)eta p reaction at photon energies from 1050 up to 1450 MeV are presented. The measurements were performed using the Crystal Ball and TAPS detector setup at the Glasgow tagged photon facility of the Mainz Microtron MAMI. The general assumption that the reaction is dominated by the Delta 3/2-amplitude is confirmed. The data are in particular sensitive to small contributions from other partial waves.
Differential cross section for the reaction 2H(γ, p)n from 133 to 158 MeV
The cross section for the reaction 2H(γ, p)n has been measured at laboratory photon energies Eγ = 133−158 MeV and c.m. angles between 30° and 150°. The reaction was induced by a tagged bremsstrahlung photon beam incident on a liquid deuterium target. The uncertainty in the absolute cross sections is ⩽ 5%. There is now reasonable agreement between recent measurements in this energy region and the overall data set now defines the cross section sufficiently well to provide a test of current models of the reaction.

The first data on target and beam-target asymmetries for the $\gamma p\to\pi^0\eta p$ reaction at photon energies from 1050 up to 1450 MeV are presented. The measurements were performed using the Crystal Ball and TAPS detector setup at the Glasgow tagged photon facility of the Mainz Microtron MAMI. The general assumption that the reaction is dominated by the $\Delta 3/2^-$ amplitude is confirmed. The data are in particular sensitive to small contributions from other partial waves.
Insight into the Narrow Structure in eta Photoproduction on the Neutron from Helicity-Dependent Cross Sections
The double polarization observable E and the helicity dependent cross sections σ1/2 and σ3/2 were measured for η photoproduction from quasifree protons and neutrons. The circularly polarized tagged photon beam of the A2 experiment at the Mainz MAMI accelerator was used in combination with a longitudinally polarized deuterated butanol target. The almost 4π detector setup of the Crystal Ball and TAPS is ideally suited to detect the recoil nucleons and the decay photons from η→2γ and η→3π0. The results show that the narrow structure previously observed in η photoproduction from the neutron is only apparent in σ1/2 and hence, most likely related to a spin-1/2 amplitude. Nucleon resonances that …
Measurement of theH1(γ⃗, p⃗)π0Reaction Using a Novel Nucleon Spin Polarimeter
We report the first large-acceptance measurement of polarization transfer from a polarized photon beam to a recoiling nucleon. The measurement pioneers a novel polarimetry technique, which can be applied to many other nuclear and hadron physics experiments. The commissioning reaction of $^{1}H(\mathrm{\ensuremath{\gamma}P\vec},\text{ }\mathrm{pP\vec}){\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}$ in the range $0.4l{E}_{\ensuremath{\gamma}}l1.4\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{GeV}$ validates the technique and provides essential new data to constrain the excitation spectrum of the nucleon.
Photoproduction ofπ0Mesons off Neutrons in the Nucleon Resonance Region
Precise angular distributions have been measured for the first time for the photoproduction of π0 mesons off neutrons bound in the deuteron. The effects from nuclear Fermi motion have been eliminated by a complete kinematic reconstruction of the final state. The influence of final-state-interaction effects has been estimated by a comparison of the reaction cross section for quasifree protons bound in the deuteron to the results for free protons and then applied as a correction to the quasifree neutron data. The experiment was performed at the tagged photon facility of the Mainz Microtron MAMI with the Crystal Ball and TAPS detector setup for incident photon energies between 0.45 and 1.4 GeV…
First measurement of the circular beam asymmetry in the γ→p→π0ηp reaction
Abstract The circular photon asymmetry for π 0 η photoproduction on the proton was measured for the first time at the tagged photon facility of the MAMI C accelerator using the Crystal Ball/TAPS photon spectrometer. The experimental results are interpreted within a phenomenological isobar model that confirms the dominant role of the Δ ( 1700 ) D 33 resonance. The measured asymmetry allows us to identify small contributions from positive-parity resonances via interference terms with the dominant D 33 amplitude.
Scaling of the 4He(γ,p)t reaction in the Eγ = 80–160 MeV region
The 4He(γ,p) 3H reaction cross section has been measured with tagged photons of energy 81–158 MeV. Protons were detected over the angular range 55°–125°. The scaling of the data as a function of momentum mismatch has been examined for two reaction models, the modified quasideuteron mechanism and quasifree knockout. Both models show clear scaling behaviour but comparison of the predicted and measured scaling function shapes favours the modified quasideuteron mechanism at momenta up to ≈500 MeV/c.
Experimental study of the halo nucleusHe6using theLi6(γ,π+)He6reaction
The reaction $^{6}\mathrm{Li}$($\ensuremath{\gamma},{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+})$$^{6}\mathrm{He}$ was studied over the angular range ${\ensuremath{\theta}}_{\ensuremath{\pi}}=40$--150$\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}$ with the aim of investigating the halo structure of $^{6}\mathrm{He}$. Photons from a bremsstrahlung beam were tagged in the energy range ${E}_{\ensuremath{\gamma}}=170$--220 MeV at a resolution of $\ensuremath{\Delta}{E}_{\ensuremath{\gamma}}=630$ keV, and positively charged pions detected using high resolution stacked HpGe detectors. The measured angular distributions for the resolved $^{6}\mathrm{He}$ ground and 1.80 MeV excited states are compared to previous measurements a…
First measurement of helicity-dependent cross sections in π0η photoproduction from quasi-free nucleons
The helicity-dependent cross sections for the photoproduction of $\pi^0\eta$ pairs have been measured for the first time. The experiment was performed at the tagged photon facility of the Mainz MAMI accelerator with the combined Crystal Ball - TAPS calorimeter. The experiment used a polarized deuterated butanol target and a circularly polarized photon beam. This arrangement allowed the $\sigma_{1/2}$ (photon and target spin antiparallel) and $\sigma_{3/2}$ (parallel spins) components to be measured for quasi-free production of $\pi^0\eta$ pairs off protons and neutrons. The main finding is that the two helicity components contribute identically, within uncertainties, for both participant pr…
Helicity Dependence ofγp→Nπbelow 450 MeV and Contribution to the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn Sum Rule
The helicity dependence of the single pion photoproduction on the proton has been measured in the energy range from 200 to 450 MeV for the first time. The experiment, performed at the Mainz microtron MAMI, used a 4pi-detector system, a circularly polarized, tagged photon beam, and a frozen-spin target. The data obtained provide new information for multipole analyses of pion photoproduction and determine the main contributions to the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum rule and the forward spin polarizability gamma(0).
Near-threshold $\pi^-$ photoproduction on the deuteron
The first experimental investigation of the near-threshold cross section for incoherent $\pi^-$ photoproduction on the deuteron $\gamma$ d -> $\pi^-$ pp is presented. The experimental technique involved detection of the ~131 MeV gamma ray resulting from the radiative capture of photoproduced $\pi^-$ in the target. The total cross section has been measured using an unpolarized tagged-photon beam, a liquid-deuterium target, and three very large NaI(Tl) spectrometers. The data are compared to theoretical models that give insight into the elementary reaction $\gamma$ n -> $\pi^-$ p and pion-nucleon and nucleon-nucleon final-state interactions.
Narrow Structure in the Excitation Function of eta Photoproduction off the Neutron
The photoproduction of $\eta$-mesons off nucleons bound in $^2$H and $^3$He has been measured in coincidence with recoil protons and recoil neutrons for incident photon energies from threshold up to 1.4 GeV. The experiments were performed at the Mainz MAMI accelerator, using the Glasgow tagged photon facility. Decay photons from the $\eta\rightarrow 2\gamma$ and $\eta\rightarrow 3\pi^0$ decays and the recoil nucleons were detected with an almost $4\pi$ electromagnetic calorimeter combining the Crystal Ball and TAPS detectors. The data from both targets are of excellent statistical quality and show a narrow structure in the excitation function of $\gamma n\rightarrow n\eta$. The results from…
Polarized photon measurements of the12C(γ→,pp)and12C(γ→,pn)reactions forEγ=160−350MeV
The ${}^{12}\mathrm{C}(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\ensuremath{\gamma}},pp)$ and ${}^{12}\mathrm{C}(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\ensuremath{\gamma}},pn)$ reactions have been studied for ${E}_{\ensuremath{\gamma}}=160\ensuremath{-}350$ MeV using linearly polarized photons from the Glasgow tagged photon spectrometer at the Mainz microtron MAMI. Both reaction channels show a negative photon asymmetry $\ensuremath{\Sigma}$ for missing energies ${E}_{m}$ below 70 MeV, where direct emission nucleon pairs is expected. A strong peak at low ${E}_{m}$ is observed in ${\ensuremath{\Sigma}}_{(\ensuremath{\gamma},pp)},$ but not in ${\ensuremath{\Sigma}}_{(\ensuremath{\gamma},pn)}.$ Furth…
C12(γ,p)11B cross section from 80 to 157 MeV
The $^{12}\mathrm{C}$(\ensuremath{\gamma},p${)}^{11}$B differential cross section has been measured over proton angles ranging from 58\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{} to 128\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}, using tagged photons of energy 80--157 MeV, for low-lying regions of residual excitation energy in $^{11}\mathrm{B}$. The data have been compared with four different types of calculation. It is shown that scaling of the cross section with momentum mismatch occurs for both the ground-state and excited-state data.
Measurement of double-polarization asymmetries in the quasi-elastic Process
We report on a precise measurement of double-polarization asymmetries in electron-induced breakup of He3 proceeding to pd and ppn final states, performed in quasi-elastic kinematics at Q2=0.25(GeV/c)2 for missing momenta up to 250MeV/c. These observables represent highly sensitive tools to investigate the electromagnetic and spin structure of He3 and the relative importance of two- and three-body effects involved in the breakup reaction dynamics. The measured asymmetries cannot be satisfactorily reproduced by state-of-the-art calculations of He3 unless their three-body segment is adjusted, indicating that the spin-dependent part of the nuclear interaction governing the three-body breakup pr…
Compton Scattering from the Deuteron below Pion-Production Threshold
Differential cross sections for elastic scattering of photons from the deuteron have recently been measured at the Tagged-Photon Facility at the MAX IV Laboratory in Lund, Sweden. These first new measurements in more than a decade further constrain the isoscalar electromagnetic polarizabilities of the nucleon and provide the first-ever results above 100 MeV, where the sensitivity to the polarizabilities is increased. We add 23 points between 70 and 112 MeV, at angles 60deg, 120deg and 150deg. Analysis of these data using a Chiral Effective Field Theory indicates that the cross sections are both self-consistent and consistent with previous measurements. Extracted values of \alpha_s = [12.1 +…
Signatures of the d*(2380) Hexaquark in d(γ,pn→)
We report a measurement of the spin polarization of the recoiling neutron in deuterium photodisintegration, utilizing a new large acceptance polarimeter within the Crystal Ball at MAMI. The measured photon energy range of 300-700 MeV provides the first measurement of recoil neutron polarization at photon energies where the quark substructure of the deuteron plays a role, thereby providing important new constraints on photodisintegration mechanisms. A very high neutron polarization in a narrow structure centered around E_{γ}∼570 MeV is observed, which is inconsistent with current theoretical predictions employing nucleon resonance degrees of freedom. A Legendre polynomial decomposition sugge…
Measurements of Double-Polarized Compton Scattering Asymmetries and Extraction of the Proton Spin Polarizabilities
The spin polarizabilities of the nucleon describe how the spin of the nucleon responds to an incident polarized photon. The most model-independent way to measure the nucleon spin polarizabilities is through polarized Compton scattering. Double-polarized Compton scattering asymmetries on the proton were measured in the $\Delta(1232)$ region using circularly polarized incident photons and a transversely polarized proton target at the Mainz Microtron. Fits to asymmetry data were performed using a dispersion model calculation and a baryon chiral perturbation theory calculation, and a separation of all four proton spin polarizabilities in the multipole basis was achieved. The analysis based on a…
High Precision Momentum Calibration of the Magnetic Spectrometers at MAMI for Hypernuclear Binding Energy Determination
We propose a new method for absolute momentum calibration of magnetic spectrometers used in nuclear physics, using the time-of-flight (TOF), differences of pairs of particles with different masses. In cases where the flight path is not known, a calibration can be determined by using the TOF differences of two pair combinations of three particles. A Cherenkov detector, read out by a radio frequency photomultiplier tube, is considered as the high-resolution and highly stable TOF detector. By means of Monte Carlo simulations it is demonstrated that the magnetic spectrometers at the MAMI electron-scattering facility can be calibrated absolutely with an accuracy $\delta p/p\leq 10^{-4}$, which w…
Threshold enhancement in η photoproduction from 2H and 4He
The photoproduction of η-mesons from 2H and 4He has been studied for energies close to the production thresholds. The experiments were carried out with the tagged photon beam of the Mainz MAMI accelerator. The η-mesons were detected via their two photon decays with the electromagnetic calorimeter TAPS. Total cross-sections, angular and momentum distributions of the η-mesons have been determined for both reactions. The total cross-sections in the threshold region show a large enhancement over the predictions of a participant-spectator model, indicating significant final-state interaction effects. The results are compared to recent model calculations taking into account nucleon-nucleon and nu…
